by the way if you use iso 1600 and bring down the exposure in post by -1, you will probably get less noise than what you have with iso 800.. of course it means less dynamic range (maybe clipped highlights) in exchange for less noise.

you are right. i use auto ettr most of the time. i set the iso range up to 1600 on 650d, 6400 on 5d3 in anamorphic mode.

Not sure what you mean with 3k, but with 14-bit lossless and 2.39:1 (as well as SD overclock @240MHz and Global Draw = off) I can go as high as 2560x1072, not higher. Actually, not always continuous rec. even with this setting, so maybe one should consider 2240x938.

2560x1072 is some 2.1x crop to add on top of a native 1.6x APS-C crop... wonder what focal lens one should use in most situations :D With 2240x938 you go to 2.4x to be added on top of 1.6x, for a whopping 3.9x crop factor relative to FF :o

Never understood exactly how these modes are usable in real situations. Maybe for airplane spotting? 8)

Btw I'm unable to make the cropped frame centered on the sensor -- it is slightly on the right or on the left.

Also, fps is locked @30/1.001, seems impossible to lower it.

But not a 70D expert here... pretty sure ArcziPL knows much better.

this is not as good as 700d/650d/eosm/100d.

on 650d i tested thoroughly 1x1 1920x1080p, i can go up to iso 400, iso 800 and above have so much noise, footage is just garbage.

if no dpaf in crop mode, can 70d do 3k 1x1 manual focus mode? 70d has 80 mb/s writing speed in video mode, almost reaching 7d, with a swivel lcd and better heat sink.

thanks a lot. will try 5 fps override.

A side topic, I have a kodak 645 pro back. It is 36x36mm. The image is so good in terms of color and gradation. I like it the best. I know it's ccd and 16 bit. My point is that larger sensor is better in many ways, sometimes not scientifically defined.

What do you mean by two stops better low Light performance ?
Sensor is still the same. 3,5k is just a crop in the same sensor size so it should receive exactly the same amound of light.
3.5k with 1.6 crop factor is close to super 35 cinema so it's also a good choice.

I mean when I use 5d3 anamorphic mode, I can go iso 6400, in 3.5k 1x1 mode, I can go iso 1600.

ml version: crop_rec_4k_mlv_snd_isogain_1x3_presets_2022May15.5D3113.
5D3, 50 mm stm ef lens. Canon Q menu ipb 1080p 24p. Card spanning, sd card overclocked to 160 mhz.
In full resolution live view mode, AR 2.4, 10 bit, 14 bit lossless, 7.4 fps, no fps override, the ml calculation is either green or yellow, about 100 MB/s.
Yet when I push the start button, the recording time is less than 1 second.
Turning off card spanning, and sd overclocking do not help.
Not sure what I missed here.

In anamorphic full resolution mode, AR 16:9, fps 15, 14 bit, 14 bit lossless, works perfect, manually stop after 1 minute.
If I want to change fps to 24 fps, 10 bit, 14 bit lossless, the camera freezes. I have to take out the battery. Seems the fps override does not work in this mode.

Does 650D/700D ML have electronic level? I know 5d3 has it and I use it constantly. Thanks a lot, Bilal and all ML gurus.

When dslr revolution just began, about 2008, I watched Vincent Laforet's 5d2 demo video, and almost all of 5d2 videos available on vimeo, and when 7d came out, almost all of the 7d videos, I felt that 5d2 footage was much better looking than 7d's, although 7d was newer at the time, similar codec, line skipping, etc. Full frame footage just looks more organic, not just limited to shallower dof, although may not have clear scientific criteria.

Raw Video / can 70d do dpaf in crop mode?
March 11, 2023, 06:29:52 AM
thinking to get a 70d for its dpaf.
if it is working in crop mode, maybe 3k can be continuous due to its 75-80 mb/s recording speed.
seems dpaf works in uncropped mode, but not sure if dpaf works in cropped mode.
3k 1x1 10 bit raw with dpaf for a super 16mm sensor size is sweet.
hope 1x3 modes work on 70d in the future.
ml really rocks.

efs 10-18mm has an adapter for ef. just change the plastic mounting ring to the alloy adapter. you can buy it from ebay, about $30-50 dollars.

af is fine on 5d3. just activate af in the ml menu. by default, the af is disabled.

Almost the same. 5.7k has a little bit less details when enlarged. But it is totally indiscernable in the full photo. Normal view distance will not show any difference.
Full frame mode has two stops better low light performance, and has much better shallow dof, tonality, gradation, color, dr, etc, due to 2.5 times larger sensor size.

I feel that I should feedback some success stories.
I tried 650D ML for about five sessions of real world events news shooting (non paid volunteer work), each session last about 2 to 4 hours, mostly from noon to afternoon, sunny day, no rain no cloud, ambient temperature kind of hot but not sweaty. 650D mode is UHD 1x3, AR 16:9, 12 bit 14 bit lossless, sd card overclocking to 240 mhz, sd card 256 gb san disk extreme pro 170 mb/s. The camera temperature was always at around 50-55 C. Later I did not pay attention to temperature anymore, yet no issue for the camera and the card.
The ml raw files were processed in mlvapp, exported to dnxhr 10 bit codec, edited in blender, finally exported to 1080p. On a 27 inch computer screen in 1080p full screen mode, image quality is so good. I would say that my little 650D ML is a baby Amira. LOL.
Thanks a lot to Bil and other ML gurus.

The same room, a darker scene
In door, night, light bulb, ISO auto
Canon Q menu: IPB, 1920x1080, 24 fps; Small raw;
3.5k 1x1, AR 2.39, 14 bit lossless
ISO 1600 in this scene
-10 bit, green, one minute, manually stop
-12 bit, first several seconds red, then yellow, then green, one minute, manually stop
-14 bit, after several seconds the recording stopped

So
in 3.5k 1x1 preset
10 bit mode is the most robust, can be continuous all the time
12 bit mode is also very robust, difficult to break down
14 bit mode depends on the scene.

3.5k 1x1, AR 2.39, 14 bit lossless
ISO 200 in this preset

-12 bit, first several seconds red, then yellow, then green, one minute, manually stop
-14 bit, first several seconds red, then yellow, one minute, manually stop
All show green in ML menu by calculation, suggesting can be continuous.

UHD 1x1, AR 2.5, 14 bit lossless
ISO 400 in this preset (why, this preset should have larger sensor area than 3.5 k 1x1)
10 bit, 12 bit, 14 bit, all only several seconds.
By calculation, 10 bit UHD should be equal to 3.5k 12 bit in terms of data flow, yet very short recording time.

Seems to me, that IPB and Raw may help in certain modes, in this case, 3.5k 1x1. This is one of my major preset, the other one is 5.7k 1x3. But 5.7k 1x3 14 bit is green always, no need for these hacks.

just tested on 5d3, uhd 1x1, 3.5k 1x1, 14 bit /14 bit lossless modes, artificial light, iso auto 1600:
canon q menu:
ipb + small raw,
all-i + raw,
all-i + mid raw
all-i + raw/l-jpeg

the recording time is the same ball park, 50-70 frames.

i thought ipb plus raw can save out some camera memory. but seems just marginal effects.

Raw Video / Re: 5d3 3x3 1080p raw 60 fps not working?
February 15, 2023, 09:40:56 PM
1080p 50 fps is much better. In 10 bit 14 bit lossless, ML calculates 84 MB/s for the data flow, and the camera can do 86 MB/s, so the color is green. I recorded for more than a minute, the indicator is always green, yet the console screen comes out automatically, but the recording is still on. AR can go up to 2 in 50 fps mode too.
I guess somehow 1080p 60 fps is not optimized enough. Just my 2 cents. Thanks a lot, everyone.

Just did some further investigation.
Sorry, the rolling pop up window is actually script console. I try to turn it off and restart the camera. If I push the record button for 60 fps, it still pops up.
In 1920x1080p 60 fps mode, the ml menu calculates as 87 MB/s, yet the camera can only do 70 MB/s in this mode. Maybe the 60 fps requires a lot of internal memory? Tried 14 bit, 12 bit, 10 bit, 10 bit is more than 10 seconds. AR only allows 2.39, cannot do 16:9.

Just tried Canon Q menu IPB 1280 60p mode, card spanning on, sd card 160 mHz, the recording time was a little bit longer, even there was yellow after the initial red, but the error message came out again.

CF card: Sand Disk Extreme Pro 160 MB/s 128 GB
SD card: San Disk Extreme Pro 170 MB/s 128 GB

I use the same cards for card spanning and sd card overclocking in 3.5k 1x1 raw, no issue.

OK. I tried again now with this approach.
First, card spanning off, sd card overclocking off, 1080p 60 fps preset, red, about 9 seconds, stopped automatically, no error message
Second, card spanning on, sd card overclocking off, 1080p 60 fps preset, red, about 5 seconds, stopped automatically, no error message
Third, card spanning on, sd card overclocking on 160 mhz (needs sd card reformat and camera restart), 1080p 60 fps preset, red, about 3 seconds, stopped automatically, error message window out.
