The more I'm using the 70, the more I like, but damn..., got used to a few things that ML had for the T4i that are lacking here..

One is intervalometer function. Totally didn't think about that and went to do some time-lapse in the snow and cold... Duh. Haven't had an actual intervalometer for years now. Had it in ML for the T3, then T4i (alpha build, but even the pre-alpha I installed in the T4i worked perfect for me).

So..., damn..., do I miss ML now that I "upgraded" to the 70D...

I think he is referring to the front or back focusing and general viewfinder autofocus failure that some Germans are seeing from this body. Word is that it only involves the center AF point and large apertures, but that makes no sense since the camera auto focuses at max aperture always. Not sure what's happening.

I am not seeing it on my 70D, but it's the American version.

I love my 70D it kicks ass in so many ways, but I kept my 700D for magic lantern.

Ahhh..., got it. Had that (mostly back focusing issues with non-Canon lenses) with the 60D, T3i, T4i, etc., even 7D, but at least that had MFA. I tested accuracy (as I do with all body/lens combo's now) the day I got this body. No front or back with the Canon 70-200 or the Sigma 18-35. Spot on. 70D allegedly has MFA though I've never needed it.

Not sure why a German version would be different? Should be off the same line? Feel for the folks dealing with it though, went through a lot of that with the T3i bodies...

No, I don't have 70D yet. But I see many owners complain about AF in the viewfinder. Not in LV mode!

Oh, well, not sure I've ever even used AF for stills, actually? Wait, shot the CX Nationals this year (last weekend, actually) and used the 70D in AF for the action stuff. Yeah, sometimes it hunts if there's not enough light, but that's AF for you.

Hey guys,
anyone here have AF issue with 70D? :-)

Not so far, but still pull manual most of the time. Tested with a glidecam on a mall one day and the AF rocks compared to the T4i...

Are you having an issue with it? If so, what?

Yes. It's my case. I no longer have a 650D. Just one 70D. And I'm no longer using Magic Lantern.

Yep. Same here Amigo, same here. With this body and sensor, there is such GREAT potential for Magic Lantern too!

I don't know if you read what I wrote as you seem to have gotten me totally mistaken in your comment, I am definitely not overly concerned about zoom.  I just listed 3 different segments short(50mm f/1.8 ), mid(18-135mm), and long(55-250mm) range lenses(granted cheap lenses) to cover a wide range of spectrum with 3 different budget lenses, other than the 18-135mm, the other two are on the other sides of the spectrum that I mentioned(which is what I want, variance to cover close/mid/long in 3 different "specialized" lenses.... though it'd be nice to have a cheap "go-to" lens that'll have some versatility if I don't want to bring more than 1 lens around while walking around on a casual day (which I figured the 18-135mm will do...but again, open to suggestions).

I mentioned the 50mm f/1.8 already..... in fact I played around with it today too... as for the other two, thanks for bringing them up, are these the ones you meant?
(edit: oops, I mentioned the 50mm f/1.4 in my above post... but also had the f/1.8 in mind but didn't mention it, lol, my bad)

I travel most of the year (business mostly), find myself in places where I can't afford to have crappy glass. But like a lot, I can't afford Zeiss either (or won't anyway). The nifty 50 is part of my loadout as it's cheap and very light. Lost? No biggie. The one that got the most mounted time was a Sigma 17-50 2.8, but now a Sigma 18-35 1.8. Rarely comes off. The only other lens I'd want to haul with me (and do) is my 70-200 Canon L. For the price, it is one of the sharpest zooms going. These have served me well from the Louvre to Tahir square in Cairo last year, these were all that I needed. Oh..., and a quality doubler if you have the light...

To be honest, I don't think anyone is using the 6D ML anymore (same for 50D/7D/EOSM). You are running Tragic Lantern.

"Tragic Lantern" Hah!! That's Canon FW....
#58
Would be brilliant if it could actually be done. And it could I think, but not likely with a FW hack. Will prob have to come from Canon.

Had the 60D, sold it and went down to T4i with ML. Now on 70D, no ML, but still SO much more a camera than the 60D AFAIC (and with true AF in video..., well..., almost anyway). Get the 70D on a sale, get a real lens, start playing with it and getting the controls down and before you know it, ML will be out for it...

Well I can't wait for the fw update! I love this camera. The Dual Pixel AF has up the quality of my steadicam and crane shots. no need to buy an expensive follow focus system.

Same boat here, so much more cam than the T4i and 60D, but still feels crippled without ML...

Have had one for testing for a bit, but can't let go of the T4i with ML until ML comes out for the 70D. T4i with ML is more of a camera than the 70D factory.

Hey, guys. When will the firmware for the 70D? Interested RAW video?

The 70D just came out, people are still working on all the other Canon's that just came out (T4i, T5i, 5D3, etc.), so expect it'll take a while since someone also needs to donate a development 70D for people to work with and prob needs a FW update from Canon before development goes anywhere.

I couldn't, that (part of) why I only just bought the 6d now that ml is ready for it. The one day w/o ml on the 6d vs. my 60d felt like being in the stone age, you only then realize how crude the Canon fw really is.

Exactly! But what I use the Canon for is principally video now (though I started with my -old- Canon F1 as a photog back in the early 80's), so the articulating screen has become too valuable for me to give up for the high ISO and other bennies of the 6D. Had one for a week to test and was blown away. Just wish Canon would have given the 6D a screen that flipped, a FF sensor and flip screen..? Oh yeah..., I'd have that this INSTANT!!

If I read correctly, you're interested in autofocus capabilities. I own this camera for ~2 weeks now, and I played a little with it. I use it with a 17-55 IS USM.

You can either use Servo AF (full automatic) in video mode (either with face tracking or simply a certain point), or you can turn it off and use focus by hand.

When using Servo AF, it zooms slower, more gradient, but accurate, no hunting. This is good for overall usage, and can track anything moving at "normal" speed. This cannot track very fast movements like full zoomed on a kid's face who's running around. But for wide, it's working perfectly. I read in a Canon paper that the engineers slowed down the focus change to have movie look, because it can perform much faster (see next option).

The other option is to turn Servo AF off and use manual autofocus. It means that the camera focuses to the place where the focus box is when you push the AF-ON button. This is very fast, almost instantly, no hunting. Not as fast as the conventional PDAF AF, but almost at fast, always < 1sec, usually ~0.5 secs. This is good when you're moving the camera and when you stand on a new object, push the button, and it gets focus. Also, in this mode, the focusing noise of the lens is only heard when you push the button.

My lens has an audible noise, mainly in Servo AF where the camera is always focusing. in AF-ON mode, its better because much infrequent. According to the reviews, STM lenses have no audible noise and they focus smoothly.

So, if you like to record games, not fully zoomed on faces, I think you'll be satisfied with the Servo AF with an STM lens. 55-250 STM is now available, try one because it has the coverage I think you need.

The sensitivity of the sensor is a bit better, but it doesn't matter for outdoor sports. Compared to the 5d3, you don't have Tv and Av modes on this camera, only AUTO and MANUAL. In AUTO, you cannot set ISO, in MANUAL, you need to set everything manually (but there is auto ISO). So, in MANUAL, you set the aperture to the desired, you set the shutter speed to 50 and you set auto ISO, it'll work fine.

So dammit..., just got used to ML in my T4i (first pre-alpha and then the alpha), and now looking at the 70D solely for the weather sealing - where I shoot is ME deserts (fine dusty sand) to SE Asia (humidity) - and the vid capabilities. But without ML for it, it's like going backwards to me. I've become so used to having the WB and other flexibilities of ML, not sure I can go without? Already ruined a T3i because of the humidity and such, so taking the T4i again because of what I can do with it, also risks totally losing a camera. So..., who can I send a case of wine to for work on ML for 70D???

Hi everyone ! I'm french, and i'm trying to understand your posts... But my english is not good enough !
I just have one question please, i'm about to buy a DSLR for video mainly. Hesitating between Sony Alpha 77 or 650D with Magic Lantern...

Reading your words, it seems that a lot of features are working now. So have i just to install ML alpha to get all those features working well with probably some bugs, or do i need to install it, and then modify some files or other things ?

hopefully you will understand what i mean... :-\

Thx !

If you are in Paris, let me know, I will be there early next week and can show you my T4i with PA2 on it and you can play with it a bit. I could help you instal, but hesitant as many say you can brick, but I think if people follow the exact dirs, there won't be an issue.

And you could help me with things there in Paris in exchange perhaps?

Tested the BGRip with full batteries -- nothing changes. I will re-order one and see if its my BG grip that went bad. I will repost in 2 days regarding this. Also is there a way to re-lock the firmware to original to test if that works?

I've used Meike batt grips with sterling effect over the years (bashed around in India, Kuwait, etc). Never a problem, solid, well built and cheap (like $30 on the A). Works perfect with ML PA2. So yeah, send yours back for another copy (like we seem to have to do with lenses on a regular basis these days...)

LOVE the "virtual beers" idea.

Maybe in real-life, somewhere, sometime? I travel a lot. Overseas mostly, but get around the country now too quite often. Solo, run&gun shooter, have-equipment-will-film kind of stuff. So just maybe..., that would be cool, eh? Do a film about a guy who goes around the country just to take ML code-runners out to dinner and drinks? Who's up for it? Wait..., Canon would send a hitman in for sure..., well..., maybe not the greatest idea...

Holy carp..., heard that the T5i is coming and a flash of terror overtook..., OMG I hope the dev for the T4i is compatible in some way...

Double Carp!! Knowing Canon, they'll muck it up just enough that everyone will have to start all over with development for that..., or just give up and stick with the mainstreams (5D3, 6D, etc.)

Funny that I started with a Canon F1 (top of the line for all intents) back in 1981 and went DOWN to a T3i just to use ML for vid overseas and so I wouldn't hack a lung if I dropped it off a cliff while paragliding...

T4i is waiting for ML (which WILL come and it sounds like SOON) and take it overseas to risk certain peril.

BTW, those who worked on T3i dev, thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Countless times ML saved the day with functions Canon couldn't see fit to provide.

Count me super excited too!

Stayed with the T3i for as long as possible just because of the capabilities I had with ML. Wore the shutter out (was giving hints) and warranty was up, so I upped to a T4i, now also patiently waiting and super excited!!

BTW, have been registered here for a long time, just never actually post about anything...
