Guys, Canon just announced a firmware update for the 5DMIII - uncompressed 8-bit, 4.2.2 HDMI out. It will be out April 2013. I believe this is great for us filmakers. What I'll like to know is if this in any way could be leveraged by ML to port to other cameras such as the 7D r 60D?

Any thoughts on this anyone?

I have this mic, the sound is magnificent especially for interviews. I plug mine in directly into a tascam dr-40. I'd recommend to acquire (which I will get myself) a juicedlink since the preamps on the dr-40 are not that great. Great mic though.

The answer is that you will not see the Magic Lantern Menus and Overlays in the EOS Utility. The Magic Lanter settings will still apply to pictures but movie recording is disabled - at least on the 50D.

Just in case you guys cannot wait til Canon updates it's software suite - If you have a Mac running OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion, Canon EOS Utility is broken. The workaround is to install an older version of the software. EOS Utility V2.10.4 works pretty well with Mountain Lion. I have tested it with my MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion with all the latest updates applied. All features work. Basically, to install, first delete the entire "EOS Utility" sub-folder found in the "Canon Utilities" folder in Applications. Decompress the downloaded zip, mount the image file and run the install. It should work.

You can download EOS Utility V2.10.4 here:

Hardware and Accessories / Re: TSCAM DR-40 Noise

Thanks for the tips Mike. After having done some pretty good research, I have narrowed my choices between the following 3 mics:

1. Audio-Technica AT897 Line + Gradient Compact Shotgun Condenser Microphone
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002TTN3Y/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

2. AZDEN SGM-2X Professional Shotgun Microphone
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CMU0S8/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_2?ie=UTF8&smid=A2NYACAJP9I1IY

3. Rode NTG2 Condenser Shotgun Microphone

I am ready to purchase one of these within the next 3 days. I'm leaning towards the Audio-Technica AT897. The reviews are pretty good on Amazon, YouTube and Vimeo. Also, it technically should work impeccably with the TASCAM DR-40 which requires BALANCED OUTPUT and it can also run on either a AA battery on phanton power. And most importantly, it is $60 less than the Rhode ( the other mic I was looking to buy) which will let me get some extra filters with the money saved.

Has anyone had any good/bad experince with the Audio-Technica AT897?

Just today I did some tests with a DR-40, a H4N and a 302 Sound Devices field mixer. Condenser shotguns were ok, the results are indeed usable.

Results with dynamic mics were not so good, the internal preamps do create some noise. When normalized in a DAW the DR-40 had more high frequency noise, the H4N actually introduced some rather ugly digital noise pattern. So I cannot really recommend either of them with dynamic mics. Obviously when using the preamps of the 302 and just sending the line signal to the recorders everything was ok.

Also, I found these two videos of interest:

After doing some digging and reading the users manual, it turns out that the DR-40 does not work properly with mics that dot not output balanced audio. I was using a chea shutgun mic, the htdz, and that mic only puts out unbalanced audio. I will be getting the Rhode NTG2 or the equivalent but less expensive Azden shotgun mic. I'll post my results later. BTW, do you guys have any suggestions on a balanced output shut gun mi? Anywhere from $150-200

Hardware and Accessories / TSCAM DR-40 Noise
August 29, 2012, 11:15:41 PM
Hi guys,

Recently I bought a tascam DR-40 field recorder to use with my 50D running magic lantern. The DR-40 works pretty well with the internal mics (very little noise), but when I connect an external mic (and I have tried several different good quality mics - with and without phantom power), there is a lot of noise present ( there's a very present sound hiss as well as athe a tic of the LCD screen as it changes characters on the display. I was wondering if anyone else has had the same experience with this recorder? I'm seriously thinking about returning it and getting a different model.
