I installed everything again carefully and now things are working ok for 640 x 640 in my Sandisk Extreme 45MB/s (I have three of these so I would like to avoid buy another card) It works for 960 x 402 also, but does not work for 920 x 518 (skip frames), so...

Fingers crossed for the 854 x 480 because it is the same datarate of 640 x 640, my only hopes for 16:9 now !!!

I will try another card...

Please, consider enable the 854 (or 856) width, very useful for DVD quality 16:9 (854 x 480)

and also, it is less data rate than 920/944/960

with 640 x 360 and 720 x 406 I can record without skip frames and with simultaneous wav audio.

but...

in all resolutions I always get magenta frames. No matter 640x360, 720x406, 640x640, 960x408... all give me magenta frames.

Maybe some 600D are better than others, or the raw modules and bin need to mature???

Is there a solution?

854 x 480 (16:9) will be a great option for sure. perfect for 16:9 DVD quality work.

it is the almost the same data rate of 640 x 640 and in my tests 640 x 640 works ok with frame skip off in continous recording.

854 x 480 = 409920

640 x 640 = 409600

maybe 856 x 480 will work better due to be multiple of 8?

I did the install, was easy.

Maximum resolution I could record was 960x408 at 2.35:1 aspect ratio, around 15.6~16.3MB/s

Anything more than this recording stops

Sound recording off, I did try RAW and SRAW, also did try Hacked mode on off.

I am using Sandisk Extreme 45MB/s (in card reader in computer it works at 28MB/s writing)

The buffer and card writing benchmarks on camera are more than 20MB/s so I do not know what is making the movie recording stops

RAW video playback on camera is always black and white

At 960 x 540, when I enable Skip Frames, many frames skips and recording continues at 18.2~18.7MB/s

At 1280 x 720, also with Skip Frames, recording goes on at 20.2~20.4MB/s and many frames skips

Maximum 16:9 resolution I can record without skip frames is 720x406, lower than DVD quality...

So I think enable 854 width would be good idea, because it will be usefull for 854x480 recording in 16:9, great for DVD work.

any ideas in how to make it works better, using 920x518, 944x532 or 960x540?

thanks

ok, thanks! I am already reading the topic about RAW instalation for beginers, I found it!

about the 920 and 944 width, will you upload this new feature  into a new zip file with modules in the tragic lantern?

Hi 1% thanks for the 920 and 944 width!

Sorry for this question, (newbie question) but... how can I install the RAW video feature in the 600D?

I have the ML 2.3 instaled and working ok, so I am wondering the easy way to add the RAW feature (600D)...

920 x 518 in 16:9 will be better than 854x480 after croping the 960x480.

yes, enable the 920 width would be good!

Hi 1%

the idea is to get the biggest resolution "width x height" in 16:9 aspect ratio (1.77777x)

best option would be 960 x 540, but people are reporting magenta frames, so...

something like 942 x 530 could work good

942 x 530 = 499200 x 24 = 11982240 x 1,75 = 20968920 (under 21MB/s)

or 940 x 528

940 x 528 = 496320 x 24 = 11911680 x 1,75 = 20845440 (under 21MB/s)

but the 960x540 is reported to have magenta frames, this is why i suggested 960x520, to try to avoid drop frames and magenta frames.

maybe 940 x 530 can work also

I am just trying to suggest some "nearest quarter full hd" options close to 1,777 aspect ratio and  under 21MB/s to make the upscaling to 1280x720 or 1920x1080 the best possible.

about RAW in 600D:

the "width x height" values are fixed to choose from a table of values or can we type any value we want?

would it be possible to try 960 x 520?

14 bits / 8 bits = 1,75

960 x 520 = 499200 x 24fps = 11980800 x 1,75 = 20966400 (under the 21MB/s limit)

I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A PEN

I would like to have a pen, but not any pen...

a pen to describe the peoples face inside the bus in the way to work... each expression, the sadness in the eyes due to life is not the way they would like it to be... the lines drawn in their face by the bus motor noise everyday hurting their ears made to listen birds singing...

a pen to expose my emotions when everybody tells me to hide them...

I would like to downgrade my pen sometimes for a pen-cil to have the option to rub the paper vigorously after write a mistake in my life, erase the missed opportunity and rewrite it into an orgasm of happiness

I would like to have a pen-is not to cum for porn dreaming about girls I will never have, but a pen-is to write in my girlfriend's skin how much my heart pulses for her... hoping the ink cum would last forever... just like a tattoo...

I would like to have the courage to exchange my beloved DSLR for a hacked pen in which the ink would be automatic multicolored changing taking into account the the meaning hidden between the text lines...

I would like to have a pen which could draw a movie in an electronic paper to avoid me the hard work to turn my ideas into a feature film and this way I could celebrate my sinful sloth

I would like my pen to be a sharp knife to hurt the film emulsion just as the film emulsion sometimes hurt us and make us cry inside the movie theater... and this way my sharp knife pen would write the story direct into movie images just like Norman McLaren did.

I would like to have a pen and some pieces of paper to make this writing task my lonely work to avoid the need to beg people to help me mainly when my sweaty money is not enough to pay for their willing

I would like to have a pen to tell how much Mary waits for John everyday in the bus station twisting her hopes for he to stop just looking and take the action

So my pen could tell that John can't imagine Mary looking to her mirror to perceive if her beauty is enough to make him overcome his shyness and make the move

And my pen would find the words to make people imagine that mid age woman with her shining eyes in a hopping face when she sees the young lawyer inside his black suit up the bus stairs and stand by an old washed out advertising of the Nothing Hill movie.

My pen would have the power to describe the angels taking care of us hidden against the sunlight in the sky where the DSLR poor dynamic range could never see them... and they just laugh about the joke God always do not giving each one of us our operating instructions when we was born

So my pen could write the second life many people would like to have forgiven the beloved partner instead of breaking up...

I hope my dreamy pen do not stop taking the virginity of paper and makes me more happy than my never perfect DSLR

and I also hope I do not upgrade my pen into other tools to avoid turning myself into a forum member to discuss voice recorders, computer keyboards, writing softwares and printers.

This filter is designed to clean aliasing and moire in 1080p canon dslr video.

I was wondering if it can clean the moire in 720p canon video because 720p is perfect for Magic Lantern HDR.

Does anyone own this filter to do a test in 720p moire?

Thanks!

Thanks for reply. I do not know if the GH2 hack is open source because I do not understand computer programing, but I know the the following links allows to download the original camera firmware, the hack program to modify the firmware and have instructions in how to upgrade the firmware after modifications, maybe this can be a start point to implement the HDR video to the GH2:

GH2 720p 50p and 60p is good resolution and GH3 can do 1080p 50p and 60p, this is perfect for HDR video using the Magic Lantern Firmware principle.

So the suggestion is Vitaliy Kiselev from Personal View  and Magic Lantern team work together to implement HDR video to the GH2 / GH3.

Hi, I had a look in your blog and it is really interesting. You are an anamorphic enthusiast!

At this moment our project is under development and we just need to try the lens coating options to finish the experiments. We are trying to raise 250 usd to do this task. We are getting donations in the site: http://www.apefos.com

If you want to help, please post a page on your blog about it with the Vimeo video link and the website for donations and share with your friends and followers.

The focus works on the same ring. You rotate to adjust the cylindrical focus and move front and back to do distance focus. Also you need to do focus on the taking lens alternately to find best combination between adapter and lens.

We are waiting the final product become ready before let it get other hands.

General Help Q&A / How do I choose a camera
October 15, 2012, 12:57:45 AM
How do I chose a camera: Remember you do not need to agree with me. What is good for me can be bad for you. But if you want better DR for an affordable price think about this:

First I was hungry for a high resolution, moire/aliasing free, no compression artifacts camera. I could not accept defects in the image. So when the DSLR revolution begun I waited until the almost perfect image camera was released: the hacked GH2.

Looking further, There was another must have features:

I found I could not live without an articulated LCD. Carry, install and handle an external monitor is annoying. Weight on backpack and over the camera, size, batteries to charge and so on.

Good low light performance, at least iso 3200 was a must too. In some tests I found the human eye can see the same of 6400 iso at shutter 1/25 and f1.4, so if the camera can do this it is better.

Small, lightweight camera.

Affordable price, no more than 1K usd.

An EVF would be great, but without it I can use a dslr loupe.

Manual audio control, another must to avoid hiss using a preamp and also get constant audio level.

low noise at low light or, if there was noise, not so hard to be cleaned with denoise software.

I like big sensors. I come from a full frame 35mm still photo background and big sensors delight me. But the GH2 won the game due to the amazing image quality.

At that time I was not worried about dynamic range or about slow motion resolution. 720p slow motion in GH2 was good enough.

I even got used to the lack of headphoes connector and accepted work looking at the audio metering on screen or use phones connected to the wireless receiver.

But suddenly the highlight clipping in GH2 and the no option to get good shadows at same time of good light area start to annoy me. The i.dynamic feature does not work with legacy lenses, it just works with native/electronic m43 lenses, and it does not solve the problem at all. So I started to look around on internet to try to find the "magical camera" a GH2 with better dynamic range. But the answer was simple: it did not exist. But new models and hacks starts to show up.

The BMCC: 13 sftops DR, but it is not for me. no articulated lcd, maximum iso just 1600, difficult to do handheld shooting, not expensive for many people, but expensive for me, small sensor, large file sizes and expensive storage.

All other affordable cameras do not improve the DR enough to worth buy.

I even started drol about the VG900 due to the camcorder form factor and FF sensor, but the DR is not that great to handle highlights.

I know magic lantern HDR video was laying around since december 2011 but there was some issues I did not like. To work in 1080p it needs optical flow and it gives some annoying artifacts to the image movement. And working with 720p in Canon cameras was considered by me the "never option" due to low resolution, softness, aliasing, moire and so on.

The Magic Lantern HDR uses different iso in alternate frames to get two streams to merge in post. If you work with 720p 50p you get two 25p streams and you just need to do optical flow in the highlight stream to do merge, so the movements are good.

I did a research in reduser forum and people says you just need to interpret footage to change 25p to 23,976p, no need anything else, audio pitch correction is an option, but people say tv stations in europe do not do it. The ML allows to work with 48fps, but without audio, so 50fps is the way to go.

I become so hungry for DR I start new researches about the Canon cameras in 720p quality. I downloaded lots of videos from vimeo and review websites And I found it is not that bad. It is bad if you put it side by side with GH2, but if you look at it alone, to be honest: it is good enough!

Resolution is not everything, dynamic range start to become more important for me than resolution and there are some shoots impossible for any affordable camera to do, like a person inside a house against a opened window. The ML HDR can do it, and can do great! Vimeo have lots of videos showing this, just search magic lantern hdr. Also search for T3i 720p to download some videos to see the quality.

If you know how to work with the Canon 720p it can be good. tripod and shallow dof helps a lot, but do not feel tied to this. You can do handheld and architecture no problem. People who watch the videos will look at the main subject and will not be looking for image imperfections. The 50 inch LCD tv sets from 10 feet distance shows no significant difference between 1080p and 720p. We keep looking at our computer monitors so close and due to this we get hungry for resolution, but if you look at a 720p DLP or 3LCD projector in average distance the image will be amazing!

So after this conclusions I found the T3i 600D with HDR magic lantern is THE camera to go. Also Canon cameras have the Highlight Tone Priority function. It improves 1,3-1,7 fstops highlight over GH2 and there are some picture style profiles which allow even better DR in 1080p: Lightform, Cinema PS, Visioncolor / Visiontech, Marvel

The T3i 600D have all features: good codec and datarate, sdhc and sdxc cards, manual audio, articulated LCD, 6400 iso good enough to clean, aps size sensor, affordable price, image stabilization in kit lens, can use nikon lenses, good DR picture profiles to load into camera, highlight tone priority, 3,5mm mic jack, magic lantern is almost finishing the audio monitoring and agc disable for it, but canon original firmware allows manual audio control also. Also ML allows peaking, zebra, histogram, vectorscope, waveform, HDR video and lots of other features. It has manual exposure: iso, shutter and aperture, also there is a company developing a moire/aliasing filter to fit near the mirror which can clean the image imperfections. It is shipping for 7d and 5d and almost shipping for T3i.

So why will I keep myself a resolution slave? I like the Canon 720p quality to do better DR with ML HDR or with HTP and picture profiles. It is very cinematic in a projector. 115 inch screen from 10 to 12 feet is great for 720p.

Remember you do not need to agree with me. What is good for me can be bad for you. But if you want better DR for an affordable price think about it.

thanks. These are the answers I was looking for. T3i rocks!

In the USER GUIDE i found:

"The 600D/T3i already has manual audio control, but right now it's not possible to change audio settings from Magic Lantern. You can only use audio meters during recording."

Does this means the audio options in the original firmware are unavailable after installing ML?

In the USER GUIDE I also found:

"Does Magic Lantern completely replace Canon firmware? No. Magic Lantern runs from the card, as an add-on over standard firmware. You will still be able to access all Canon functionality."

So does this mean I can exit ML menu and go to the 600D T3i original camera menu and adjust the audio levels manually and than go to ML menu again?
#224
Hi all, my first post!

I am considering buy a 600D T3i to do HDR video. So...

I would like to know if I can use the options in the original canon firmware to do manual audio adjust even if the ML is instaled.

I want to to go to Sound Recording Menu and change Sound Rec. to Manual and adjust the Rec Level. Is this possible?

Thanks.
