Camera-specific Development / Re: Canon EOS M3
September 11, 2015, 04:42:24 PM
EOS M3 is a great Camera but keep in mind of the Green Tint in the corners of the EF-M lenses. This does not occur with EF-S or EF Lenses however. Video is also over Sharpened with the EF-M lenses to which cannot be fixed even if you turn down Sharpening in the Picture Profiles.

There are Samples with RAW Files posted in this review here.

Thanx and HNY!
Was it sharp in HD enough on your monitor? :)

He converted it to 720p to fit Vimeo's filesize limit.  He has some great videos and i don't understand why people use Vimeo over YouTube.  Yes YouTube compresses the video but so does Vimeo! Alteast with YouTube you will still have native 1080p Resolution,  Plus you can earn money from you're work.  It's a No brainier.

This attitude really ticks me off and I take direct offense to it. ML is an open community and all of the code is completely open. It is an affront to this community and to its members to say stuff like this. We are all Magic Lantern and you are calling us liars. Comments and attitude like this have no place here.
Advertised manufacturer card speeds are for read speed not write speed. Your 45MB/s card likely has a much lower actual write speed, which is the reason you see so much improvement with the 95 MB/s card. Feel free to provide actual benchmark numbers to backup your baseless comments. If you still think ML is lying to you, feel free to inspect the benchmarking code and compile it yourself.

Sorry to offend you which was not my intent.  it was simply an opinion to which you clearly took wrong.   I'm not calling anyone liars,  If anything.  You guys are calling me one by somehow not believing my video was shot at 1792x762 which clearly shows the resolution if you watch the video.  Again, i'm saying What is there to lie about.  Why would i make this up?  I can post up the original uncompressed video so you can determine the resolution for yourself.

As a 6D user, at the moment i can record RAW video at 1792 x 750 x 23.987FPS x 14bit to a maximum of 20 sec. than it skips frame.. But my guess is that it has to do that maybe i was shooting particularl dark subjects?

You need this:  Sandisk Extreme Pro 64 GB 95 MB/s http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007NDL54C/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Correction, only one person says he got 40+ seconds with 1792 resolution  8)
I doubt that  ;)
Got a 6d for more then a year and two fast Sandisks cards...never had more then 14 seconds of 1792x 750 resolution or 17 seconds of 1728 x 724 resolution...
That  is 25 fps MLV's with audio enabled.
2.39 aspect ratio is our lifesaver  :P

You can calculate the whole thing:
Your precious 6d SD card slot can write about 40MB/s max and the buffer is about 255MB.
1792 x 750 x 25FPS x 14bit /8 (Bits to bytes)  /1.000.000(bytes to Megabytes) = 59 MB/second... So if your SD can write out 40MB/s your buffer fills up with 19MB/s
255MB buffer / 19MB = 13 seconds of video -> boom buffer full  :o
It's called physics  :D

You're Physics are either wrong or Magic Lantern isn't telling us everything.  I use a Sandisk Extreme Pro 64 GB 95 MB/s.  It doubled the recording time compared to my Sandisk 45 MB/s Card.  Also note,  I disable Audio.  The Video shows the resolution so what is there to lie about.

IMHO you couldn't be more wrong there, I've just bought a GH4 after shooting ML Raw and i'm very impressed, I can see why with a speedbooster Dave Dugdale did what he did. The high sensitivity performance is not bad at all, it is average, alot better than any canon bar the 5d3 1Ds and 6d. With the correct curves in camera and careful exposure the amount of latitude in post in very very good. I've tried a 70d, it was like digging up the garden with a small trowel and a broken wrist as a opposed to the JCB that is the GH4.

Detail and sharpness in a 5D image is deceptive, Your probably looking at aliasing and god knows what other nasties, I doubt that's real detail.

Yes the GH4 is compressed, but its done so well the resulting image if your doing it right is truly stunning, my mouth dropped when I pulled out the card and watched on a nice display after my initial test. I also love not worrying about batteries getting killed and changing 64gb cards every 15 mins, in fact its bliss.

But there's still a place in my heart for the canon raw, it is such a nice image in every department other than the aliasing and rolling shutter issues.

But don't kid yourselves folks, IMO as a video camera goes, the 70d does not hold a candle next to a GH4, sorry.

I'm far from wrong,  You're comparing JPEG vs RAW.  RAW will always be better and i would NEVER Shoot JPEG even if i was running out of space.  Correct me if i'm wrong but did you just say the GH4 is better than the 5d3 1Ds and 6d ISO performance?  The 6D and 5D Mark III Blow away the GH4 in Low Light.  GH4 vs 70D High ISO would be a more proper Comparison to which the GH4 is a tiny bit better.  Yes Video Compression is getting better but the point is, it's still compressed,  You're still limited regardless but if you shoot in RAW,  You gain a lot more Data to play with let alone sharpness. 4k Video is not a standard yet so until then it's almost pointless.

That Comparison sucked, and call me crazy but the second shot inside the shade looked like the 5D was sharper and had more detail overall.  Yes the GH4 shoots 4k but that doesn't mean its good at it.  I would gladly take the 5D Mark III RAW Video and High ISO performance over the crappy High ISO and Highly Compressed footage from the GH4 not to mention the crappy Lens lineup too. I was surprise Dave Dugdale sold all his canon gear to shoot GH4 and A7s.  It makes no sense,  RAW gives you so much more Possibilities in post.  Only thing you can do with the 4k Footage is crop.

Some test Footage with the 6D shooting RAW at 1792x762 with the 135L using the Sandisk 64GB 95MB/s.  I get around 40 to 50 Seconds,  And at 1600x680,  I get over a Minute to a Minute and 25 Seconds.

It's not "good enough" when UHS-1 slots can reach 104MB/s.  I'm not even talking about UHS-II, this is the UHS-I slot that is already in the 70D and other less expensive Canon DSLRs.  I think it's kinda bullcrap that the 7D Mark II has an SD card slot that reaches 75MB/s in addition to its CF card slot (redundant) while the 70D only has the 1 SD slot and it's limited to 40MB/s.

I almost wish these Canon DSLRs shot raw at 12-bit instead of 14-bit.  Obviously that makes them worse for still photography, which is their primary purpose, but when it comes to video the most noticeable improvement comes from 8-bit to 10-bit, above that it's hard to notice.  I know if these cameras shot raw video at 12-bit instead of 14-bit, we could definitely fit higher resolutions through that 40MB/s bus.  This is why I wish we could set higher than 3.0x bit rate for h264 shots.

Agree but it is what it is.  How do you know the 7D Mark II has 75mb/s?  Also I think Magic Lantern Chooses not to do 8, 10, 12 bit RAW and i think it should be an option.  It's silly and i do not believe their reasoning behind it.  I really think we can push these cameras to 1080p + if we had the ability to do 10 Bit RAW.

You guys are overreacting.  40MB/s is good enough especially since the 6D is the same and i have gotten some great RAW video on the 6D.  If i remember correctly,  With a 64GB 95MB/s Sandisk card,  i was able to shoot over a minute at 1600x600 and roughly 45-55 seconds at 1792xXXX with 2:35:1 aspect ratio.  I went from a 45MB/s card and was told on this forum it would not be much of a difference but it was.  it doubled my recording time.  So the Card you put into the camera does matter.  Lets just hope the Dual AF works well with RAW video.

I actually don't,  Yes YouTube Compresses the Video but alteast its 1080p,  Your Vimeo link is not even 720p to my eye.  Vimeo has a file size limit.

I don't know guys, I think that the character development was a little lacking.

What?

Stop using Vimeo!  Use YouTube so we can properly see the Quality.

Baby Jace seems annoyed as he cannot get comfortable in his chair. Filmed on the Canon EOS 6D With Magic Lantern RAW Video. Color Grading Done in Adobe Camera RAW, Edited in Premiere Pro. Video may seem a little soft,  That's because Focus Peaking wasn't working correctly.

Gear Used:

Canon EOS 6D
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM
RAW Video @ 1600x680 / 1792x762

Raw Video / RAW Video issue with Zoom Lenses?
May 31, 2014, 05:27:45 PM
I have a Canon 6D and the 24-105mm Lens.  Works great but i'm noticing when i zoom in the Picture gets darker and i have to adjust the exposure.  it's an f4 lens which means it shouldn't do that.  My guess is RAW video works a little differently?

General Help Q&A / Re: Upgrade SD card or no?
May 29, 2014, 11:15:51 PM
Just did a test and the new card gave me 152 more frames at 1600x728 than the previous 32GB 45MB/s Sandisk Card. So i would say upgrading to the 95MB/s Card does make a difference,  i believe that is a good 6 to 7 seconds more.

well yeah,  but am i?  I read the 6d is limited to 40MB/s, but also read its 50MB/s.    I'm seeing a lot of good results with the 95MB/s card compared to mine so i guess will have to find out.

General Help Q&A / Upgrade SD card or no?
May 28, 2014, 07:04:01 PM
I have a Canon 6D and can currently shoot RAW Video at 1600x728 on my 32GB 45mb/s card for about 30 seconds which is nice.  If I was to upgrade to the sandisk 90mb/s card,  would I gain anything from it considering the 6D buffer is 40mb/s?  my current card write speed on average is 38-41mb/s.

Why am i getting a white/Magenta Screen when i push record for RAW Video on the 6D.  it happens 90% of the time.

Post it on YouTube,  Vimeo Quality is really bad.

I haven't touched Magic Lantern in a while since i got a 70D,  but i just recently got a EOS M for a First Person View for my Wildlife Photography.  So far it works well but i want to squeeze a bit more Quality out of the Camera.  I have a 32GB Sandisk Extreme Pro 45 MB/s and a Sony 64GB 40MB/s Card.  Below is an example of the Quality.  I know i can push the Quality more but how far can i go to still have continuous Video and what are some basic settings to recommend?
