Raw Video / Re: New to RAW, Can't find RAW files in SD Card.

Use Switch for mac:

https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=15108.0

It runs in terminal – very straight forward – just select the folder you wish to extract the DNG from the .MLV file and select the output destination using the 'C' key from the main menu.

For 14bit raw I choose to manually set the black level to 2048 and white level to 16383 (but that's just what I do).

Hit the 'R' key to run the command. Once completed you'll have a folder full of DNGs and a .wav file (if you selected mlv-snd in camera). You then just import the clip in resolve and make your proxies / begin editing.

Thanks Martin for the updates!

When you decode the .MLV, do you assign a black and white level to the frames? I've noticed that bright highlights are unrecoverable with the highlight and exposure slider. When I set the white level to 16383 (5D 3) in MLV_DUMP I get the full dynamic range in the highlights (no clipping) on the same shot in resolve or ACR.

Thanks again for your continued development :)

I had a similar flickering issue in Resolve – it looked more like white balance flickering from 2000 to 5600 – only on certain clips. I think it has something to do with resolve reading the dngs. Have you tried viewing the dngs in ACR?

Wow. This is incredible.

Will there be a custom MLV_DUMP for mac? :)

Thanks!

All the lens info is in the video description on youtube. I would use ACR but crunching that much footage through AE would take weeks. I used MLVFS for the conversion. Converted to LOG using the Arri LOG C curve in resolve. I rendered out 4444 log files then brought the edited sequence from premiere back into resolve for final grade and NR. 10bit purely because of the data rate. I avoid going over 2 TB because its just too much to buy a drive for  every shoot. I only have 4 256GB cards too. I have no idea what darkframe is so is there a tutorial on how to execute that? Would love to know. Thanks mate.

Hey guys,

Shot this wedding – 3 x 5D3's @ 10bit FHD 24fps. Shot solo – was quite a handful on the day but came up well in post. My first time using Davinci Resolve Studio and the noise reduction feature.

Shot about 1.6TB of footage between 3 cameras.

Feedback welcome :)

Cheers.

Theres a few others here having the black level issues popping up with 10bit. I have a suspicion that it could be a result of having raw_twk loaded or "extra_hacks" selected in the mlv menu. Its one of the two so far I've had no false black levels with both switched off. I will test extensively over the weekend. Anyone else who has had black level issues tried this? And is it even possible that another module would interfere? I'm clueless on the coding so all I can do is test for you guys.

10bit works for you reddeercity? I upgraded to Version 78 although 10 bit files are still looking very dark in the preview. On 5D3 – am I doing something wrong?

With mlv_dump from http://builds.magiclantern.fm/utilities.html ?

If yes, try disabling cold pixel fix (--no-fixcp) and upload a small MLV so we can look into it (even cutting the first few MB from a file will do the trick). M03-1356.MLV appears to be OK.

I'm on mac – is there an updated mlv_dump for mac?

10
I used mlv_dump instead to convert to DNG then used exiftool black level to 2040 – seems to have fixed it.

Although now there is an issue with the top section of the frame. It looks smeared.

It is 8.5GB file. I'm on Mac.

I found a similarly corrupted file that is much smaller.

Hey guys I've been getting some weird behaviour from Mark III 10bit MLV files converted to DNG with MLVFS. Probably 1 in 50 MLV files seems corrupted.

It looks like the Black Level issue that we're all familiar with – but I can't correct it using exiftool. I got the black level changed to 2048 but did not solve the issue.

What might be happening here and is there a way to fix it? Would someone care to try exiftool to confirm? Here is a DNG file (untouched) from one of the corrupted 10 bit MLVs.

Wooow! So impressed with this so far. Fast too! Love the controls and the highlight recovery is amazing – just did a test of over exposing on purpose – much better than resolve. Can you add a hotkey for removing files from the left pane (del)? A countdown timer on the encoding dialogue box would be snazzy. Only 14bit raw works for me so far – 12bit looks 2 stops under and 10bit looks very dark with pink highlights (5D3). Thanks martinhering!

14
Oh snap. This looks cool. Can it deal with sound and 10/12 bit dngs? :) Looking forward to a release.

Raw Video / Re: What resolution and ratio do you use for 60fps in 5DMIII?
« on: January 19, 2017, 08:59:50 AM »
mattcraigthomas is talking about mv720.

1920 x 672 stretched x1.667 in post.

You can get up to 6 seconds at 14 bit with a fast enough card. Drop to 10 bit you can record over 1 minute.

16
If you're trying to get LOG-C why not use "Davinci YRGB Color Managed" and change the timeline and output gamma to LOG-C in the color tab of resolve? Then export the video as pro-res 4444XQ.

I found that the Arri Alexa profiles built into film convert do a good job when it comes to bringing the files back to REC709.

17
Is there any significant differences? I haven't updated as this version has been extremely stable. If there's a nice change I might update.

The main reason for 256gb cards is to film continuous for more than 30min for ceremonies and other live events like that. Only for those moments would I ever use them or try to anyways haha

Thanks for the info man!

I film weddings with the 256GB cards and have owned 128GB cards too. Highly recommend the 1066x and 1200x cards from KB. Recently I had a 128GB Lexar die on me... KB cards still going strong.

And as for upgrading to the latest nightly – its super quick and easy to do. I would even go one step further and try out the new 10/12 bit raw experimental build for the 5D3 as it will give you up to 70 minutes with the 256 card or 34 minutes with 128 card shooting at 10 bit.

18
I made a test with a card Tone 14/12/10 bits
5d Mark III 1.1.3
Build January 5

I hope this can be usefull for the comunity.

Full info into the video.

Is this before or after the black level fix posted by A1ex above for 10 bit files. It is supposed to remove the purple colour cast in 10 bit.

I shot a wedding last week – 10bit MLV lite on 5D3. All shot at 60p. It is quite stable. Had 2 clips with black level issues much like aforementioned in this thread. 1 clip completely corrupt, not sure why. Here's the link:

This video is awesome, very informative and something I've been look for the last 4 years of Magic Lantern. I'm using 5D Mark II so I'm curious what lens did you use, what the highest ISO did you use and lastly do you prefer DiVinci over Adobe Raw and AfterEffects to process into ProRes4444XQ?

Thanks! I have a tonne of lenses. 24mm 1.4 Sigma Art, 35mm 1.4L Canon, 50mm 1.8 STM Canon, 85mm 1.4 Sigma, 135mm f2 Canon and Samyang and two Canon 70-200 F4 L IS. I went all the way to 6400 ISO in the dance floor footage. I do prefer resolve for speed but After Effects for noise reduction and sharpening (also I'm a photographer and very used to ACR controls so that helps).

Hey guys, I recently completed another wedding film shot 98% on the 5DIII RAW MLV and a couple of shots from the 5D mark IV (4K 24p).

Here it is:
I'm all about getting the 'neutral' canon picture style look in the raw files so I also developed my own colour workflow. If you liked the way this film looked check out my tutorial on how I did that.

Here it is:
Thanks a lot for checking it out!

@noipego its very similar looking to the 6D – more moire than the Mark III – in my eyes the image qual of h264 is more or less identical. Hardly worthy of an upgrade considering what is currently on offer with ML + 5D3. 4K image is noisy as hell.

Oh and if you're waiting for ML on 5D4 – its a $3500 gamble at this point as you can't predict 5D4 will run raw recording / ML in foreseeable future / ML at all.

Raw Video / Re: How to "force" higher horizontal resolutions than 1920?
« on: December 01, 2016, 04:54:30 PM »
I'm not a crop mode expert but according to the calculator in this thread: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=18326.msg175675#msg175675 3200 x 1320 recording in crop mode would actually be a 1.8x crop of the sensor. I'm guessing because you're at 3.2K that you'd be utilising more of the sensor?

25
Yes it seems to be caused by raw_twk. Can zoom 5X fine without this module loaded.

Raw_rec works without glitches 10bit/12bit.

Here's raw_rec at 10 and 12 respectively:

Exactly same workflow as mentioned in last post.
