Share Your Videos / Otherworld

I recently made a new film for one of my favourite community projects - Otherworld, an immersive theater space designed for children with additional needs. I filmed all but a couple of the interviews using the lovely Magic Lantern Raw hack.

It's become a cause close to my heart, so I hope you enjoy!

Thanks for watching guys, I really appreciate the feedback.

I hope this answers some of your questions -

It was the first project I used Cinelog on, and it really helps getting skin tones better (which I really struggled with using Visionlog).

My workflow is MLV converted in Raw2CDNG, opened in After Effects with ACR (add Cinelog here), then using NeatVideo to reduce any noise and export as Avid DNxHD Movs so I have a 'digital negative' but in an editable format. Then cut in Premiere and colour in After Effects over the dynamic link thingy.

LUT wise I used a blend of a Cinelog LUT (Eastman) to get the colours and one of James Miller's Deluts to bring up the black level and with the shadows that filmy look. I played with the Vibrance effect in After Effects as that does a great job at bringing out the colours whilst leaving the skin tones alone. I use FilmConvert as the last step as I'm a sucker for that grainy look.

Lens wise they are just the lenses I've fallen in love with recently, but would love to expand my collection when I get a chance. I shot a lot of it pretty much wide open to get that dreamy ethereal quality, hope that comes across OK.

Let me know if you think I could be improving my workflow, any insights would be great. I've learned almost everything I know from kind people on this forum so any light I can shed is my pleasure!

Take care,

Jeb

Every year in Brighton UK there is a wonderful and intricate parade by children from 70 schools from the area. This year the organisers asked to me to make a little film out of it, so I thought I'd share it with you fine people!

Shot with a 5D Mk iii using raw, and with a Pentax 50mm and Rokinon 35mm.

Hope you enjoy,

Hey guys,

I used to use v1.3.4 very reliably to batch convert to DNGs, but since getting a faster machine it will only do a handful before crashing, sometimes with a Windows Runtime C ++ error.

Any ideas on how to fix this, or a recommendation for an alternative converter (for DNGs not CDNGs as I use ACR into After Effects to prepare my 'digital negatives') would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for your kind words DeafEyeJedi! I used the 60fps in raw mode, and graded from the Film Punch LUT (i think it's called). Hope that helps!

Duplicate Questions / Group presets
March 04, 2014, 03:34:10 PM
Hey you clever folks,

Would there be anyway to save a collection of options in the Magic Lantern menu (e.g. RAW MLV on, MLV sound on, fps override, shutter fine tuned) as a single on/off preset, so that you can flick between recording RAW, or timelapse, back to shooting H264 without having to double check all the individual settings?

It occured to me yesterday when I was shooting a live music session and had to change the settings on all my cards, this function would be very handy, rather than changing each setting in the 'last used section'.

No worries if not! You guys are doing amazing work, keep it up!

Hey guys, long time lurker here, just wanted to say the hugest thanks to all the developers on this project, it really is a thing of beauty to see so many people collaborating so selflessly for the benefit of the film-making community.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around ETTR, and can't find an answer anywhere on here -

- When I do auto ETTR by pressing the set button it changes my shutter speed from 48 to 53. Any idea why / how I can keep my shutter speed at 1/48?

If you could shed some light on this, I'd really appreciate it!

Jeb

Edit - I've fixed this with the shutter tweak!
