yeah that make more sense, forgot about the mirror drawback, thanks!

yeah thanks, I know there is not such an adapter for sale, but I am curious to know if someone would build one from scratch like they did for the Samsung NX1 http://www.eoshd.com/2017/06/samsung-nx1-now-full-frame-first-look-canon-mount-nx-l-speed-booster-italy/   or it's totally impossible to overcome the flange distance problem?

off topic , no ML software related but an ML hardware, maybe a stupid question but what do you think of focal length reducer to be adapt on a 5D3 (sort of a speed booster) when using the 4k crop mode on the 5D3, especially when using the 3.5k 1:1 centered x5 mode which off course depends on the resolution and aspect ratio that your are using, say for example with a 1.64 crop, an adapter that will reduces focal length to 0.72x , to adjust the image size to closer 1.18x crop factor. I don't even know if that is possible to do but was just curious to hear your opinions. thanks and sorry if this is off topic.

Video test with the Focus module which allows you to obtain a single focus with a projector anamorphic lens.

quick question.. How do you get the washed out/raw  LOOK out of the camera? It seems to be auto colored in CameraRaw in After Effects.

Just follow the instructions from Audionut, it's very simple:

INSTALLATION OF MAGIC LANTERN
1. Make sure your Canon Mark iii has the latest firmware 1.2.3 installed.
2. Take out CF card from camera.
3. Format SD card and download Magic Lantern files builds.magiclantern.fm/#/
4. Select platform from drop down '5D3.123'.
5. Unzip the file 'magiclantern-Nightly and copy the unzipped folder contents 'autoexec.bin', 'ML' and 'ML5D3123.FIR' to the SD card.
6. Run the Firmware Update from Canon's menu.
7. After restart insert CF card and press trash can symbol to open Magic Lantern interface allowing a moment for installation.
8. Go to the Modules section in the ML interface and check these fields 'file_man', mlv_play', mlv_rec', mlv_snd' and then restart your camera.
9. The camera will now shoot Raw footage using the mlv codec.

Can you check if this helps? https://bitbucket.org/hudson/magic-lantern/issue/2022/mlv_play-destroy-data#comment-10957992

It didn't help, what I did is format in exfat the lexar 1066x 64 gb, offloaded the modules and loaded again, record 1920x1080 and play the video, it worked, exit and deleting was possible, i did some recording in crop mode and I am back to where I was in the first place.
I hope this helps.

Having trouble deleting MLV files after playing them back in camera , I am using the mlv_play menu to delete it,but nothing not exit the play menu or go to another clip, Then an error pops up, Deleting 'A:DCIM/100EOS5D/M29-2131.MLV' failed, retrying...
Any idea anyone.
thanks.

Raw Video / Re: 60D RAW video - it's working !!!

Its funny, this thread is 50 pages long & still people don't get that the 60D isn't a good RAW camera.
Continuous recording is in the realm of seconds, you get a few more if you change the aspect ratio & the most useable resolution size (for upscaling to HD) is 1280x...
For example:
2.67:1 @ 1280x480 = 32 seconds

Your best option is to crank up the H264 Bit Rate hack for close ups & use bursts of RAW for those wider shots that will need detail.
There are plenty of people making v.good films with just H264 - check out this guy on vimeo:
http://vimeo.com/kendyty

If you want RAW & can't afford the 5D3, then check out the page for RAW video capabilities for all cameras & see what else is good:
http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=6215.0

I totally agree!!!!

@comurit

I will be buying the GH4.  I will definitely keep my 60D for seconds where I need RAW shoots, and also for ML in general.  The 5d 3 is obviously the best option to shoot raw.  The one thing to consider when shooting Raw is  the space it takes up on your Harddrive.  On the other hand I have gone back to counting shots and rehearsing a shot similar to how I did when using super 8 years back..  I have recently finished a few projects with ML Raw on the 60D that went into terabytes.  With the native canon codec this same amount would have been substantially less

Here are a few examples of commercial work I have done recently every shot was ML Raw on 60D:

I don't expect to get as much latitude from the new GH4 as I do in ML raw.  I will use both cameras as tools for when needed.

Cheers,
Janssen

thank very much for your advice, we'll see how much money I will raise and then decide.

Raw Video / 5D or GH4
May 04, 2014, 07:32:58 AM
I am about to get a new camera, but I can make my mind up whether to take a 5d or gh4.
I know for sure that I love and I want it to record  short footage that have a film look.
The 5d with the raw features will let me have more room on color grading, but I am also concerning the the post production work.
The gh4 I think is more for documentaries work, looks nice don't get me wrong.
What do guy think? What shall I get.
I know this is personal but I am struggling, I can't decide.
Thank you very much for your help.

thanks to everyone, I think I made my mind up.
I will get a 5D.

Since I've been pondering the same question, I can give you some hopefully useful thoughts to consider.

First of all, let's assume that still photography isn't important for you. Let's also assume that money is not a deciding factor.

You can get your hand on a 5D3 nowadays for around $2500 (plus or minus $200 depending how much you like buying from eBay retailers). Add about $400 to that for a few CF cards and maybe another $100 for a couple of batteries. Total cost is within $3500 for a camera you can go out and shoot with.

Blackmagic 4K is $3k for the body, add another $350 for about 3 SSD 128Gb drives. Now here's the catch...you absolutely will need an external battery unless you're planning on only shooting indoors. So you really need to add $300-500 at least for that. Total cost is within $4000 for a camera you can go out and shoot with.

Dynamic range is roughly in the same ballpark, about 11 stops with maybe the 5D3 having a slight edge over the Blackmagic.

If you're planning on shooting in low-light conditions and with only available light, then the Blackmagic won't work for you. The ISO400 is not sensitive enough for anything less than a well lit indoor, or daytime exterior. You won't be able to push the footage in post without massive noise. If your bulk of shooting is nighttime, dark interiors etc, you will need the 5D3.

How important is resolution for you? 4K is much more future proof, but right now it's simply overkill unless you're planning massive re-framing in post.

The 5D3 full size sensor is both a blessing and a curse. I can tell you that most pro DP's despise it and much prefer the Super-35mm sized APS-C.

Both cameras can be reliable and unreliable. They both can suffer from dropped frames, with the 5D3 having a slight advantage in the sense that you can set it up to stop recording if frames are dropped (which is not possible with the Blackmagic).

Blackmagic has inputs for 1/4" audio lines, however the in-camera levels are poorly implemented and the build-in amp crappy. Still, it's a bit more "pro" than going into the mini-jack on the 5D3.

How important is it for you to use an external monitor? The Blackmagic monitor kinda sucks, especially in bright light. The 5D3 monitor is kinda small and annoying to pull focus, particularly with a full frame sensor. If you plan on using an external monitor with the Blackmagic, do know that you'll need one with SDI inputs which might push the price up (no HDMI out on the BMPC).

Lastly, how important is it to be inconspicuous when you shoot? A well rigged Blackmagic will look more "pro" than a handheld DSLR in public places.

Depending how important the above points are, should make it pretty clear on which camera you should buy.

P.S.

You will need a faster computer than what you have either way. Resolve is CPU and most importantly GPU hungry. I wouldn't recommend anything less than a 2012 model.

That  was explained very well, thank you very much indeed, I really mean it.
I think I will get the 5D as I am already used to canon and magic lantern.
As for the price I will get it in Japan Tokio , mapcamera has the best price around 1900 euro plus they will refund the tax for non resident ,  mapcamera deals also used item I could get an used one for around 1600 much better than B&H. And the second stuff from japanese people are very reliable. I am a flight attendant I usually buy stuff in Japan.
I really love how the 5D behaves with low light, as for the pro I don't really care to look pro as long as I am happy with the result.
Which card do you recommend? lexar 64gb? how many minutes can you record with that 1920x1080 raw?
What about the panasonic GH4 or the sony A7s?
thank you again , have a nice one.

What do you have doubts about?

I have heard people having  all sorts of problems with black magic cameras, so I was wondering if it is really worth getting one.
I wuold like to know if the raw file that both camera deliver is it the same? dynamic range and stuff like this.
Secondly I can't really manage to edit with resolve as my macbook pro 15 is an old 2009 one.
I have been working with raw file using AE with no problems using a canon 60D.
Which one would you go for?
Thank you very much.

In ML  movie menu set FPS override to 23,976 (desiredFPS)  by clicking on the Q button. Once your are ready to record set global draw off from the overlay menu in ML.
try and see what happens you should get more seconds I hope.
I get 6 seconds with a resolution of 1728x972.

"Yeah I would love the GOP Slice bit rate hack for the 60D..."

So would I but have you tried adjusting the bit rate on the 60D as per the Gop Slice specs? I have and I have gotten pretty high bit rates (plus 100Mbs)and decent h.264 video as a result.

60D suffers from Bad Pixels & RawMagic doesn't get rid of them (there was a build in the first post that got rid of them in-camera) - AE probably got rid of them for you & i don't think Resolve will do this.

Also, with a x1.5 anamorphic i found 5:3 1280x768 @ 23.976fps gave me 16secs & once unsqueezed (1920x768) upscaled very nicely to give you an aspect ratio of 2.39:1 (1920x803) (with some of the sides slightly cropped).

Thank you very much indeed for your advice, I will try with the resolution you told me.
