OK, so I have the camera back again. Long story, let's just say I haven't had access to it since shortly after it bricked. Now I do and want to move forward. The camera works in auto mode but you can't view anything you shoot unless you upload to computer. I can only access Canon menus in auto mode, which means I can't get to the firmware update menus. So is there a piece of software that I can use to get data from the camera to help diagnose the problem? I have removed and reinstalled batteries.

How do I contact this Alex person people talk about?

if i could return it to its original state and send it to Canon I would accept that the problem was there's. problem is, ML is specifically interring in that action so I can't say ML hasn't bricked my camera. And this list of lost cameras is pretty long just a forum above us. We can stick our heads in the sand, or find a cure.

I loaded some custom picture styles on my 5DM2 and 5DM3 while ML was installed using EOS Utility and didn't encounter any problems.
did you try live view tethering with that setup?

Where are these lots of people? You're not going to find them here... we'd have to make links up with fake stories.

you mean other than right here in this forum for people who have had their camera fail? I'm not interested in blame at all. I'm merely saying that a little dose of possibility is valuable when considering modifying an expensive piece of equipment. There are probably specific operations that result in errors. knowing for instance, that my problem was caused while I had some custom picture styles loaded and while trying to use EOS Utility tethering might help someone else avoid. I could/should have uninstalled to shoot stills cause ML doesn't really help there but I was so confident in it's stability I didn't even hesitate. I would tell someone who wants to use it not to use auto-boot. The extra hassle is probably worth a little more security.

Can't re-install firmware because the camera won't display menus in manual mode, and you can't do it in auto. I've done the whole try another card, remove lens, battery, turn around and spit thing. It does power up and will take pics even in auto but even there I have to switch it off, put in manual, switch on, then off, auto, on to switch between viewing and shooting. I'm hoping someone who knows what's what can step me through trying to get some data off the ROM so it can be assessed.

It's an eye-opener. I know there are warnings all over the place when you install, but I think it might be a good idea if there were prominent links to a list of actual problems caused with various cameras right there on the download page. When the idea is abstract, it seems less real. Seeing lots of actual people who have had their camera ruined might make the decision a little more delicate. I won't put it on any camera I ever get to own again.

I've had a stable 5DMkII with ML 2.3 on canon firmware 2.1.2 for over a year. Tonight I tried controlling the camera from EOS Utility for the first time since I installed ML. Now the camera is fried. It will turn on in auto mode, and take a still pic. I can access the Canon Menu, but not the ML menu only in auto mode. In manual mode, I can't do anything. Of course I have a shoot at 8am.

Hardware and Accessories / Card reader help
October 11, 2013, 08:22:53 AM
Is it true that USB 2 can't provide the power needed by the USB 3 CF card readers? I don't have USB 3. I have FW800 or a PCI card slot in my 2010 Macbook Pro. Anyway I can make this work? I've given up trying to figure out what CF card to buy. This place is chaos. There should be someplace people can enter failures with a particular card so we can track their reliability.

Raw Video / Re: Raw video on 5DMK2

What about sync sound? Are you able to get synced audio while recording raw on the 5D MKII? Or MK3? I have a Mk2 and want to dip my toe into RAW recording before upgrading to the MkIII. My current 16GB cards aren't fast enough (state of the art though when the Mk2 came out). So I want to get cards that will work with both cameras. My CF reader is a Firewire 800 device but probably isn't UDMA7 compatible given UDMA7 hadn't been invented yet.

I don't trust Komputerbay. Too flaky, too hit 'n miss. So what do I need? Is there a 32GB card that will work for everything? should I even bother on the Mk2?
