I've had 2 cards corrupt, 1 on 6D, one on 600D. Both were unusable afterwards (sector 0 ruined), all files recoverable. On 6D if you fail an H264 and produce a .dat file it can crash the player or the media catalog. But besides that no reason it would mess up the card, the raw writes way more than H264.

What cards? They were usable afterwards? Settings used?

Mine were patriot EP UHS 64gb.

They are sandisk 64gb pro.  They were completely fine afterwards I think any program that can restore the partition table should be able to repair the cards.  It took less then a second so I doubt it was a major issue. 

Is anyone else getting crazy noise when using fps override?  There is insane amounts of green shadow and just hotpixel like noise when i crank it below 1fps.

Hey guys I shot a documentary on the 6D with magic lantern and it was great.  Almost no problems accept for one.  Sometimes it would corrupt cards!! (Scary I know)  Fortunately I was able to save all the data by going into diskutility on the mac and doing a repair.  I happened twice during the whole time.  I went through about 30 cards the whole trip, so low incidence of failure.

Recreating the issue, it really only happened during bitrate overide options.  I ended up restoring magic lantern on that card because I couldn't adequately turn it off.  It wasn't a real issue as I had 2 extra 64GB cards on me at all times.

Raw Video Postprocessing / Batch Converting DNG Image Sequence

I'm in a bit of a bind, I have 300 raw image sequences in dng format, what is the easiest way to batch convert to DNxHD for my editor?  AE of course works and with presets its definitely pretty fast, but there's 300 of them.

All I want is to load raw into AE, apply preset, output DNxHD of same name to one big folder.  Any way of doing this?

edit: I decided to do it on the windows machine with RAWanizer, works great.

fotojohni : what are the photo parameters ? Which camera ?

Camera: 6D
ISO 100/1600
Lens: 50mm @ 1.4
VAF filter to reduce moire/aliasing
Shot in manual mode @ 1/45

For night shooting I switch recovery iso to 100 and shoot at 1600, then I can actually see what I am shooting in live view.  I didn't do that here though.

For grading I just went into ACR and bumped the exposure up 3.0 stops, boosted shadows etc.  I have a profile I like.

Okay this pretty much solves that.  I wonder how you get the metering data so that there is no need to go into live view for every shot.

Not possible without dual iso.  This is a truly incredible development.  Now if only it didn't have to go line by line and instead could be a dual bayer pattern with 6 instead of 3. 

Also, any chance for an adaptive algorithm that measures scene contrast in live view then auto selects?   

Just putting out random ideas I bet you are already cooking up something even better.  can't wait.

Also, ettr as much as you possibly can. Then crush in post.  I suggest using a wide angle prime because of the reduced vignetting when stopping down.  Vignetting is the biggest enemy, next one is sharpness in the corners.  Look for a lens without a curved plane of focus. 

It can be very difficult to deal with the shadow areas in the photo.  You can try to speed light them, but it usually looks like shit.  You have to be creative.   

The most important thing is to take some time to analyze the scene and compose shots effectively.

Don't know if this has been covered, but undercranked 720p @ 23.978 fps raw looks sharper than 1080p H.264 (with VAF filter) and records continuously @16:9.

It has very little rolling shutter (less than half from my initial tests).
It has much higher latitude with the colors.  Basically looks like film.

I'm looking over some footage I shot last year on the 5D mk2, almost every shot @ iso 1600 is marred by checkerboard noise patterns in the shadows.  So, 6D + bitrate override = way better for like 80% of all shots.  Get pumped!

You should buy an ND filter and get your shutter speed closer to 1/50th.  Fountain water looks suuupa weird.

What is the current thought on 10bit raw, is it possible, and is there an easy way to calculate how much bitrate it´ll save?

The way the devs have described it, it doesn't seem to be possible at the moment.  Even with hex level conversion, the area of the cpu that magic lantern has access to simply isn't optimized to deal with that level of data.  It's unfortunate because the area of the camera optimized to do h.264 conversion would be able to do it with remarkable ease, but getting access to that by analyzing camera dumps is close to impossible/needs a totally different method from current methods.

Yes ok, but how can i make adjustments in post of a dng sequence when i want to make a transition between a dark and a bright scene... i could just import 2 sequences (set one darker and the other one brighter when importing to the software) and then make a transition with opacity between both clips.. BUT isnt there a way to edit this on a single clip? and im still talking about RAW. I use after effects to edit

You know about the arrow button shortcuts no?  Go into magic lantern prefs, the icon looks like a camera with menu screen, enable iso and wb buttons, use iso buttons to adjust on the fly.  When I used auto iso the flicker was so annoying that it was pretty much unusable with out a lot of post processing.

I'm just wondering if its possible to adjust ISO or even set it to AUTO while recording raw? I couldn't find any answere yet. And yes, it does work well without using RAW in videomode. (I'm using the latest modules)

don't use auto iso in raw, it will make you insane.  I have a magic 50, aka pentax 50 1.4 with a stripped aperture clicker.  That is the best option.  otherwise just adjust in post.  14 bit gives approx. 11.5 stops of usable latitude (see ETTR for why 14 bit is so much better than 8 bit) just adjust in post.

Many people are wondering just how awesome 12 and 10 bit raw will be.  Your questions will soon be answered thanks to my rudimentary maths skills.  Read on.

For cameras recording at 21MB/s (550D, 600D, 1100D)

   Max 16:9 resolution:

      12 bit:  1024 x 576
      10 bit: 1088 x 640

   Max 2.39:1 resolution:

      12 bit 1152 x 496
      10 bit 1280 x 544


For cameras recording 40MB/s (6D, EOS-M)

   Max 16:9 resolution:

      12 bit:  1408 x 800
      10 bit: 1536 x 864

   Max 2.39:1 resolution:

      12 bit: 1600 x 672
      10 bit: 1792 x 752 (max resolution in full frame mode)

For cameras recording 60MB/s (5D mk2, 50D)

   for 5D: 10/12 bit 1880 x 1058 (full frame)
   for 50D: 10/12 bit 1592 x 1062 (full)

For 5D mk3 recording at 90MB/s

   biggest gains for 60fps and 5x crop:

   Max 16:9 @ 60 fps:

      12 bit: 1664 x 592
      10 bit: 1792 x 624

   Max rez @ 5x crop:

      12 bit: 2048 x 1158
      10 bit: 2344 x 1320

Hope this clears up all the confusion.  This would be totally sweet, but it's not solving any miracles and using it comes at a cost of reduced tonality particularly in the shadows.

Latest build is incredible!  So much data on the screen and ETTR histogram is amazing, plus the raw zebras...  I feel like it'll be impossible not to get perfectly gradable footage now!  Memory hack and everything working smoothly.

One bug to report.  Sometimes, after I record, global draw is forced off and my record button no longer works.  Switching from movie to photo and back to movie fixes this immediately.

How do I import raw files in Premiere? Can't find cineformDNG plug-in anywhere. I have windows 7.

There are a few different camps on this one. 

First you need to convert the .raw files into a folder full of .DNGs.  I'm on a mac, so I use raw2DNG, works amazingly well.

from there, you can:

1. convert to cinemaDNG using rawenizer, seems cool, but not really my thing

--or--

2. import raw into aftereffect.  (look up a tutorial for timelapse videos with aftereffects, it's really easy once you get the hang of it)

   2a when importing into aftereffects, ACR will pop up for the first frame.  This is AWESOME.  ACR is a beast program and lets you expand   dynamic range to absurd levels.  A few general rules when using ACR:

            i.  do not use auto anything, especially white balance.  It applies auto to everything
            ii. don't alter exposure, it uses a special algo that works on the balance of light in the frame, as that balance changes, like say when you move the camera, the exposure algo will change too.
            iii.  set sharpening to 0.  Sharpening pretty much takes the already bad moire and makes it worse.  I recommend using denoise.

3. use bridge to convert to jpeg.  import into premiere.  (worst way, makes colors look washed and generally bad, but, it's the most space efficient)

with photo mode set to jpeg only!

To reiterate: you must be in photo mode with live view running, before doing anything.  Then go into high iso speed NR and switch to NR.

set fps overide to 24 because default is 30.

To make sure the camera doesn't stb when you are recording, set exposure overide to on.

I think someone may have mentioned simply truncating the lower (or upper) two bits of data.  It's a loss of 2-3 stops of DR, but maybe worth it for low DR scenes where you don't need that extra data anyway.  I actually run into this situation quite frequently.

Another option could be to truncate the U+V (YUV, I'm assuming) then do a better algorithm for Y channel, just a thought.

So it will be possible to save bigger resolution and 4 times longer video with this resolution and merge it after all? (480 frames)


The buffer is like a bathtub.  There is water being poured in and at the same time water being drained (into the card)  The card is already draining the bathtub as fast as it can.

Full frame 1.8K @ 2.39 I'm getting 266 frames, (global draw on/off, magic zoom on/off, focus peak on/off, hacked on/off, zebras on/off). 

Edit: hacked no preview give ~10% more frames, hacked shows no difference.

NICE!!!!!

Crop mode I get 137 frames @ 2K! moire free and it's definately big enough with my 17mm  8)

I don't know if this is on anyone's mind, but 12/10 bit raw would solve all of our problems.

Hope this isn't too crazy to do because it would pretty much make raw totally viable for us. 

Hey, I also finally figured how to use bitrate override successfully.  Getting Bitrate = 30 (just set max bitrate as the max bitrate of your card, h.264 is a variable bitrate algorithm by default, so don't load a config) and set qp = 5 for high detail scenes, no idea what benefit it has to grading, but I'll do a tutorial if you want.  Theoretically it will approach the detail of 8bit raw.

Is there any way to save the settings of raw video? setting aspect ratio, resolution, hacked mode, delay, frame skip every time.. :/

Also it would be nice to have the arrow shortcuts available to adjust ISO WB in RAW.

Finally, still in RAW record, in zoom x5, the frame showing the area you are recording is wrong

There is but it has to be hard coded.  I tried but I deleted my xcode to make room for raw footage so I couldn't open it LOL!  What I could open was too difficult for a mortal to decipher. 

Why would you need WB, this is raw?  Also, there are.  MAKE SURE YOU LOCK ISO, lol.  It's way more obvious in RAW when it's changing. 

Zoom feature works, it's doing a lot of really crazy processing.  I only get a black and white image but it IS the correct recording area.


I wanted to make a suggestion.   At 5x zoom level, we have the ability to shoot 2.6K.  I'm wondering if some kind of rudementary pixel binning could be possible to get 1.3K.  If that was possible it would solve the moire thing.  And still give very nice footage.  Crop would be M4/3.
