Whats the best (but not too expensive) way to record car/engine/exhaust sounds?

thought about the zoom h4n or Tascam DR-40.. or maybe just an external mic for the Canon 600d?

I currently own a Canon EOS 600d (T3i) with the SanDisk Extreme SDHC 32GB (45Mbps) and just installed ML + TL. Now I have the whole winter to prepare myself for making the project and I need a lot of preparation and help

First I need a decent car mount (thought about the Delkin FAT Gecko Dual suction mount) as well as a good external mic (no idea which one?). Besides that I have absolutely no idea which settings to choose on my camera for video recording. All I have done so far are pictures + photoshop work (so I will also need to learn some movie editing stuff).

Has anyone good tutorials/instructions or advice?
