Raw Video Postprocessing / 5D Mark II Dual ISO Video
December 14, 2016, 11:09:32 PM
Hey everyone!

I remember a while ago before I had access to a 5D Mark II there was a thread where the 5D Mark II was hacked to be able to shoot Dual ISO raw video like the 5D Mark III. Where has that thread gone or has it ker-sploded because it wasn't reliable?

Searched the forums. Thanks for the help!

Hey everyone!

I made this video for the Sonoma Valley Hospital Foundation, and I shot everything with MLRaw. Can I get some critique on it?

Specs:
Canon 7D
5D Mk2

Komputerbay 1000x cards (32 and 64gig) and a few sandisks
1600x900 @24 fps
Audio recorded on Senheiser lavs in to a Tascam Dr701D
CC'd in AE and some in Davinci

Canon 24-105 F4L
Canon 24-70 F2.8L
Anamorphic lens for specialty shots

This was a video I did the cinematography with. I shot at:

25fps
1600x1156
MLVRaw
2x anamorphic
canon 7D
Komputerbay 1000x cards (32 and 64gig)
edited in Ppro and color corrected in Resolve 12.5

Feature Requests / Audio to metadata clip markers?
June 19, 2015, 06:43:30 AM
Would it be possible to before each clip starts, during like a four second warm up, you can yell the slate (scene, cut, camera, take), have that audio be transposed in to metadata, that in post you can search for?

I dunno I just thought it would be a nice way to ad use to the mic besides scratch audio.

Raw Video / Double same frames???
June 13, 2015, 07:21:23 AM
Hey guys. So apparently my Canon 7D shooting ML Raw on my komputerbay 64 gig cards causes my camera to, on every frame rate setting, cause double frames about every 20 frames. I mean, two frames are exactly the same. Has anybody else ever had this problem?

It doesnt seem to happen on ONE of my 32 gig komputerbay cards...

So the anamorphic preview for ML I believe causes tearing issues for me (the whole preview thing :P) and I want an external monitor so I don't need to worry about that. Does anybody know of any apps that can convert the signal to anamorphic? I can't find any.

Duplicate Questions / Suggestion for Anamorphic shooting
February 07, 2015, 04:05:59 AM
Hi there. I don't post all that often, but I think this would actually be a good idea. Lord help me if this has already been asked. Searched, found nothing.

So, for the anamorphic 2x display (only one I use) I have a hard time focusing, and the magic zoom focus is, no offense, really bad at focus assists.

What I end up doing half the time is being in the ML overlay, with the anamorphic compensation, crop marks, and what not, then having to scrub through the info button, going to 10x magnification to focus properly, then scrubbing through again, so i can have the crop marks and compensation, to frame my shot, and then start shooting.

To me this is very tedious, and sometimes waiting for the camera to actually start RAW recording really ends up irritating me.

Before you admins tell me I should code this, I have 0 coding experience. I suck at coding.

My request is something like this: I can have my overlays and everything set up, but if I half click the shutter button, all overlays are removed while it is depressed (including disabling the anamorphic compensation), and immediately goes to 10x zoom for focusing. then i release, and everything is back to my custom overlay preference.. This would aid GREATLY as I dont have anywhere NEAR the money for one of those overpriced monitors that can do the 2x squeeze itself.

I hope someone here on the forums could do this. Cuz that would be amazing-sauce.

I shot it on a Canon 7D with my sankor 16D anamorphic with my rokinon 85mm f1.4

Its dumb, I know. it was a school project, and it turned out to be the best shot film in our class.

General Chat / 7D mark II Raw video capabilities
November 03, 2014, 09:36:46 PM
Now I was just looking at the canon 7D mark 2 and saw that it had an increase in the buffer size, notably it can shoot 10fps at 20mp rather than the original 7D's 7 fps and 18mp.

From http://www.dpreview.com/previews/canon-eos-7d-mark-ii it states that the image buffer has increased from 25 full res raw photos to 31 full res raw.

I am a bit interested in this, because if it turns out to be even more amazing for raw video, I might just sell my old 7D to get this new one.

It still has the dual digic processor, and the ISO improvements are laughable (still pales in comparison to the 5d mk3) it will at least be as good as the 70D, which it takes many of it's improvements from.

The main thing here is that it looks to be capable of shooting at a constant 30p at 1080p like the 5dmk3, maybe even more (resolution wise, possibly FPS).

Just my thoughts. I didn't see a thread like this elsewhere on the forums.

btw im not a programmer so if I have any faults in logic here please edit this.

OMG 4k RAAAAWWWWWWW IS POSSIBLE!!!11!!!11!

Raw Video Postprocessing / MLV to CDNG Mac?
June 20, 2014, 08:00:37 PM
PPro 2014 apparently now has support for CinemaDNG. Is there any program that converts straight from MLV to CinemaDNG on a mac?

Danke!

Tragic Lantern / over 64gb worth of MLV files corrupted
February 26, 2014, 05:44:07 AM
Today I just shot over 64gigabytes worth of data. I just got home to use it, and well, everything is ruined, except for the first frame.

Ummmm... I will post pics of what this shit doth look like. its really frustrating.

Using TL for 7D feb 21.

I had installed the new ML nightlies before it and stopped using it because I was getting corrupted frames. not sure if going from Tl to ML then back to TL would cause this problem.

All in the title. It's a bit long, but for this video my dad and I were going through and changing his distributor from mechanical points to an electronic system. This is supposed to be a physical tutorial, and I really like how the colors came out.

Shot at 30 FPS exactly.
sankor 16D
Rokinon f1.4 aspherical
Komputerbay 32gig 1000x
+1 step up ring from vivitar.

I've done a bunch of tests on my channel but nothing worth posting about. Thanks ML!

Raw Video Postprocessing / .RAW to PSD
December 07, 2013, 01:55:09 PM
Pardon my ignorance, but why is there no direct edit from .RAW files to PSD files? I am talking about a direct converter like batchelor, or RAWMagic, or Raw2DNG, I am not a coder or anything, but I am just wondering, because it seems like PSD would be way better, as it is supported in every single adobe application, I believe retains all the image data of a DNG or CR2, and on top of that it can be converted to 16 bit, so why is everything DNG and CDNG when it could be PSD and have everything be hunky-dory?

EDIT: Photoshop PSD files can utilize ACR in AE and PS, you just need to select the "camera raw" option when importing. Took me a couple tries to get it right but finally did.
Plus, PSD files use lossless compression, so smaller than tiffs, same quality, and more flexibility?

I will continue to update this post with new discoveries on how to edit this

Newest Workflow

-I removed use of Adobe DNG converter, as photoshop can open all DNG formats converted from ML RAW files (DNG or CDNG)
-Discovered in Adobe Camera Raw at the bottom of the window is the Bits Per Channel Option, change from 8-bit to 16-bit
-Once batch saved as PSD, you can open and color correct in AE, PPro, SpeedGrade as an image sequence. You may reopen the saved PSDs in photoshop as an image sequence and fiddle around with the photoshop version of a timeline, as well as change the ACR settings after the fact (if you choose camera raw option when reopening)

Overall: Increased flexibility and ability with no loss of compression.
Workflow: Card>Convert to DNG>Photoshop (convert to 16 bit PSD image sequence, use of ACR, no sign of flickering)>PPro>Right click File>Modify>Interpret Footage>Conform to anamorphic 2:1>Drag to timeline (automatically changes sequence settings)
Q: Is there anyway to convert ML .Raw or .MLV STRAIGHT to 16bit camera raw PSD files?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hokay I'll get to the point quickly:

I have ML RAW on a canon 7D I shoot at 1408x1156 @30FPS exactly (FPS Override). I have an anamorphic lens (Sankor 16D) attached which stretches the image (2x stretch, changes 1408x1156 to 2816x1156, Ration is (2.44,1), so ALMOST cinematic (2.35,1))

Here is a photo of what my camera looks like: https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/921678_470098279777458_659724001_o.jpg

Editing with ML .Raw is a pain in the ass (but a worthwhile pain) and throwing anamorphic on top quintuples that. Here is my workflow thus far:

Card>RAWMagic>Adobe DNG Converter>Batch Process Adobe Photoshop to .PSD>Import Premiere Image Sequence>Right Click in file window>Modify>Interpret Footage>Pixel Ration 2:1>New Sequence (doesnt matter format)>Drag to sequence, auto change sequence settings.

A lot of frigging steps, but I believe that this workflow provides several benefits:

1: Native uncompressed editing in Premiere Pro CS6 with realtime playback at a resolution of 2816x1156
2: Adobe Camera Raw MAY or MAY NOT be used when batch processing in Photoshop
3: I have yet to see any flickering
4: Dynamic link to After Effects

Notable Downsides:
1: I do believe after the PSD batch convert you lose the ability to edit certain parts of the image, not sure im not a pro at photoshop. FCP is my main thang yo so dont judge meh.
2: takes f****** forever to convert all the files

In Essence I convert the files 3 times, use ACR which seems to show no signs of flickering as of yet, retain a good amount of camera data (I think) and am able to play full 2816x1156 files NATIVE in Premiere pro CS6 as I see fit.

If anybody else out there has a good way to import these in to premiere pro without that God Awful Ginger HDR, I would be ever so grateful

Thank you ML, Alex, g3gg0, 1%. You guys are the bee's knees.

User Introduction / Introduction
October 17, 2013, 03:18:59 AM
I've been following the RAW forums for a couple months now and I figured I should get an account and whatnot. I have a &d, maybe soon a mark 2 from a friend who isn't using his, and I intend to do a whole hell of a lot with RAW. Thanks ML for extending the life of my camera, and its worth as a whole.

Raw Video / Ways to transfer camera data faster
October 14, 2013, 10:41:15 PM
Forewarning: this is my first post, though I have been following the forums for a couple of months now, and I read a really good post in the 7D raw thread page 64 by dragonflame, and felt that it needed its own thread. His post was:

Quotethe 7D seems to be capable of some really great footage but seems to be held back a bit by it write speed to the card slot, what about the HDMI port?
Is it possible to output a clean uncompressed/RAW image out through the HDMI port, if so wouldn't we theoretically be able to record at the cameras max resolution and would also give people the option to record in any format they feel like with an external recorder.

I'm sure that the data transfer rate on the HDMI port is probably low, since it I believe it is just outputting uncompressed, h.264. However, I did a quick search and could not find anything that gives an absolute on the data rate of HDMI ports, I did however, find this: http://www.slideshare.net/MaryArmenta/hdmi-bit-rate-calculator

If my child size mind can read that properly, which im probably wrong, but it seems like the data transfer rate is much higher. Just an observation. Please, admins and devs, dont bash me too hard for being another know nothing schmuck on the forums. I did a search for this topic and found nada, so, yeah.

first post and whatnot.
