Duplicate Questions / ISO Limit
August 18, 2014, 12:48:29 PM
Hey,

I've tried to search this but had no lucky.

On the 5D3, when taking photos, you can set the max ISO when it's set to auto... but in video this doesn't seem to be possible.

When shooting without controlled / changing light, auto ISO is preferable... but it jumps to ISO 12800 automatically with being able to limit it. On the screen, it looks bright enough, so you can't really tell if you're not keeping an eye on the ISO.

I would much rather set a limit of say 3200 (like I do in photo), and then when it gets dark on the screen, I can easily just adjust aperture or shutter speed, without allowing a bunch of grain to enter the shot.

I sort of assumed this would have been possible with magic lantern, but saw no evidence of this.

Thanks,

Share Your Videos / TVC - 48fps 5D3 raw
June 28, 2014, 02:00:52 PM
Hey guys,

Shot this with my hacked 5D3. Used the info on here to set the camera to 48fps and then stretched back to regular viewing in post. Worked pretty well.

Short blog-post with more details:

Hey everyone,

I had read an article from Shane Hurlbut a while ago, but wasn't sure how it would work with EF lenses. So finally decided to test it out, both on the 5D3 raw, and with my fs700 for comparison.

If anybody has wondered how it would look and work (i did), you can check out the comparison image below. More info on my blog as well.

A Valentine's Video Gift to my wife.

music and video by llirik
lyrics and vocals by khan

Most of the footage is shot from our first year anniversary in Austria, with a few select shots from the UAE.
Music and lyrics were done back in 2010 as a birthday gift, and this video is a follow up as a present for Valentine's day.

Shot entirely on Canon 5D Mark III using Magic Lantern RAW hack (using the August something build)
Edited in FCPX 10.1
Graded primarily in Davinci Resolve 10, even though it was a headache.
Touchups and additional grading in FCPX 10.1 using various plugins.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

http://www.llirik.com/portfolio/merry-christmas-reflections/

A short little video pushing the limits of low light with the 5D3 Magic Lantern RAW module. Also a reason to test out fcpx 10.1 and resolve 10.

Using only available light and set to ISO 1600, the image is quite clean. Some shots look a little wonky because they are slowed down and use FCPX's optical flow (which isn't new in 10.1, but i didn't actually know about it!).

Unfortunately since the roundtrip with Resolve 10 is broken cuz of fcpxml 1.3, I wasn't able to grade there, so exported ProRes 4444 work files and graded inside FCPX 10.1. It's incredibly fast!

Lenses used were my favourite Trio: Canon EF 16-35 f/2.8, 50mm f/1.4, 100mm f/2.8 macro.

Hey everyone,

Never used Magic Lantern until I heard about the Raw module, and been consistently peeking these forums for a while now. I did the traditional tests as well, but I had a pretty busy summer travelling for work and weddings etc, I decided to test out how it handles in everything from the desert to the rain forest.

Goa. Thailand. Dubai. Oman.
This is The Garden.

Shot over the span of a few weeks during the summer using Magic Lantern's incredible 5D3 RAW Module, the short film gives a good idea of what can be achieved in different locations, different climates and different lenses.

Majority of the grading is done in Davinci Resolve 9, with minor adjustments in FCPX. Most of it is handheld and shot on the cinemascope ratio in order to fit the data buffer onto slower cards.

Original music by lliirk, with mixing by Jimmy Reid.

Okay, i looked up for pink dots and only found the 50D issue. This is different.

Attached are 2 images, and I only noticed this on yesterdays footage when I had the ISO cranked up. Is there a sensor problem for these pixels? it's the same everywhere... or is it part of the debayering process (im using RAWMagic).

Post-processing Workflow / To LUT or not to LUT
August 12, 2013, 04:15:14 PM
So I've been playing around with 5D Raw and mostly figured out Resolve Lite now.... and i've come across something I can't wrap my head around.

This came about because I had missed the Reel Names step for a Resolve - FCPX - Resolve workflow, and after literally a night and half a day of trying to get it all matched up with my edit... I've decided to call it quits on grading in Resolve... I will do that on another test video in the future. (Basically, even after re-exporting proxies with reel names... most files link back in resolve, some dont... but i also just have black screens and can't do anything).

As such, I've decided to just grade in FCPX since I know that already... but what im stuck on is whether to export my dngs from Resolve with LUT (I'm using hunter's) to Prores or not... I'm going to be testing this anyway, but this whole 422/4444 and just the power of 14-bit thing is completely new to me, and searching online i'm not finding the answer i'm looking for.

So ive decided to ask you guys: from resolve... should I export the DNGs without a LUT so that the colors are washed out and dull from the BMD clip setting (which seems to keep my highlights more)... or should I export with a LUT?

Also, I'm reading that ProRes 422 HQ and ProRes 4444 are really not THAT different, especially with the 5D Raw footage... can anyone confirm this? I shot a bunch of stuff in Thailand, Goa and Dubai on raw and really want to push the grading to see how it holds up with these vast differences in location.

Basically: with the idea that im grading fully in FCPX, I shot on RAW and am exporting the DNGs from Resolve.... should I add the LUT at this point or keep it to just BMD clip... and should i export as ProRes 4444 or ProRes 422 HQ?

Thanks for your help!

Share Your Videos / 5D raw... skies and macro
July 23, 2013, 08:38:06 PM

Decided to give this whole raw thing a shot myself, in conditions that I typically find myself shooting in: dusty/sandy white sky (that always gets blown out) or macro for detail, so was really curious to see it as no tests have focused on this.

I never really thought that 5D had a "soft" image, but after my own comparisons, it's like the regular 5D shooting has vaseline on the lens.

The workflow I used was taking the .RAW file, using RAWmagic to convert to CinemaDNG, and then simple auto colour and bring down highlights with Adobe Camera Raw and export to TIFF. i skipped exporting to ProRes and just worked with the image sequences in premiere... and even so, file sizes are HUGE. This test, in total, is about 36gb!!!!

I also found it interesting that what I thought was often just my focus set wrong when wide open on the 16-35mm... is actually just the shitty codec not able to resolve any of the detail. Definitely shooting raw for wide shots from now on I think.

but i'm curious... given that there's so much files created... which part of the workflow do you guys delete? i know i can (and probably SHOULD) keep everything... but 3 to 4 instances per shot seems like overkill. im thinking of deleting the .RAW files and keeping the DNG folder. Is there any downside to this where I may need the original canon .raw over the DNG?
