Raw Video / Colourful noise on raw dng files
March 28, 2019, 08:05:45 PM
Hi all,

Upon converting a Smart Import 2 DNG sequence to the Pro Res 444 codec, I am finding that I get bizarre, colour-changing noise pattersns:https://youtu.be/b8JkXjmBdow You can see it in the right hand lower corner of this video especially, and also, some vertical banding.

I have turned on the 'fix vertical stripes' option when using MLVFS, as well as 'fix bad pixels'. Does anyone have an idea what I'm doing wrong? I'm losing my mind...

Additionally, even though both my cache and output are set to be on an external hard drive, my memory, or storage on my Mac HD keeps slowly decreasing when I render the comp from Adobe AE using Adobe Media Encoder render queue. Is this also something anyone else dealt with, and what can be done about it? I am worried I will run out of memory halfway through rendering.

Best,
A

Thank you for this - it did not work with the Smart Import 2 script.
I hope I've made it clear that the problem I have is that the Pro Res format doesn't appear as an output option during the smart import - however, it is an option as a final export. I may just Smart Import as DV Pal, then render as Pro Res. I am guessing this affects the quality somehow but seems to be the best option for now. A lossless format and an attempted Pro Res output (made through edit - preset, then selection Apple Pro Res) both resulted in bizarre vertical stripes across image...

I tried that too and similarly, can't make an output module with pro res - pro res doesn't show up as an option. This is odd as I do have it as an option of the final export...
I don't want to spam the thread so will investigate further independently :) Thank you both for your time and advice, I really do appreciate it - learning something every day.

Will do, many thanks.

Thanks for the link Walter, unfortunately, it doesn't work because I don't have final cut... I have also tried extracting it using unpackage 4.5, but weirdly it makes no difference to the available formats when I run the script. Later on, in Adobe Encoder, I can use ProRes, but not at the time of running the script.

Hi all,

I have a problem which I haven't seen tackled in this thread.

I was excited to use the Smart Import 2 script on some dngs as I thought it might enable me to 'output' them as Pro Res, as in this video https://vimeo.com/188219725 (screenshot included)

I, on the other hand, don't have this option (screenshot also included :)).

Would anyone know how I install the Pro Res codec to Adobe AE?

Full disclosure, I have the Adobe Cloud version of Adobe Softwares, all paid for, so not hacked version or anything like that, and up to date. Really confused as to why I don't have the Pro Res option...

Thanks guys.

Hi Paul.

Thank you so much for your exhaustive and detailed answer, I really appreciate it.

I was also unsure, does shooting in raw already constitute shooting in c log, or should I manually set contrast and saturation in the Canon menu picture style to replicate c log?

Otherwise, I hope you wouldn't mind if I private messaged you if I have some other issues? I promise not to spam you! You explain things very thoroughly.

Best,
Aleks

Raw Video / Raw ML files are red in premiere pro
August 17, 2018, 08:51:54 PM
Hi everyone,

I've been importing some magic lantern footage from my Canon 5d mark iii into premiere pro. Everything was fine, videos were fine, and then at a certain point, without me having changed any video settings (at least not intentionally), all the imported files started appearing bright red! What's weirder, they do not appear red in the mlvfs safari preview. I've tried video footage from an sd card which doesn't have magic lantern and it's fine... please help!

Best wishes

Hello everyone,

First of all, many thanks to the creators of Magic Lantern for such an amazing software.

I'm a fine artist and I just want to warn everyone that I'm not a photographer or filmmaker by any stretch, having said that I have been photographing my own work for documentation for many years now and know how to use manual Canon settings to get the kind of photo I want. Recently, however, I decided I really want to move into video works and RAW footage just makes sense to me in terms of better quality of video on a budget. I'm enjoying fiddling with the software and am learning as much as I can before an upcoming video project, but a couple of things, I can't seem to resolve by myself.

1) My camera is a Canon 5D Mark III (with downgraded firmware), I have set the recording resolution in the ML menu to 1280x544 and aspect ratio to 2.35:1. On the canon settings, should I select the closest size to this resolution, as in 1280 x 50 ALL I? Is this the generally done thing - do you always want to match these?

2) My second question is re fps conflicts... I want to record one project at 50fps to be able to slow footage down, and another project, at 24. Do I make sure that the fps is suitable in the Canon menu, and then again in the ML menu? I cannot seem to find fps in the ML menu. Also, if I am recording at 50 fps, do I have to make sure that my shutter speed is greater than 1/50? Or does the video option override this need?

3) I am attaching an image for this query - my live view in video mode is teeny. This will make recording difficult in terms of composing the shot etc, can I make it bigger without zooming into it?

4) And this is a final thought - when I take pictures, I need to press the shutter button for a second longer or so than is intuitive and then always, two photos will be taken. I don't mind this too much, but is this normal? I don't think it was like this before I installed ML.

I would be hugely appreciative of any help from you wiser folk and thank you very much.
