Someone told me that if i wanted to erase my Magiclantern install the best way for now (till we have a decent unninstaller) would be to upgrade to 1.1.3 fw version

Hey,

I am just wondering if upgrading to the new 1.1.3. firmware will disable boot flag !
I mean installing ML with firmware 1.1.1 and then upgrading it to 1.1.3. Will it be a clean uninstall of ML ?
I just want to make sure that it is possible to disable it before enabling it  :)

PS: Thanks to everybody who is working on this !

Thanks,
TML

It will replace the bootflag for the official 1.1.3 one

No need to upgrade your firmware though (are you having problems with the one you have? is the 1.1.3 solve any of the problems??)

Disabling the bootflag is very easy, one line of code in fact. The problem arises because of how risky it is to disable it, the devs don't want people claiming ML bricked their camera and so to prevent this the ability has been taken away for now until a more reliable way has been found.

a1ex should be able to create a .fir to disable the bootflag safely.

I was able do disable the magic lantern in 700d because in one of the formats of the card (without erasing ML) the camera gave an error while wrting the bootflag... after restarting the camera... magic lantern was gone...

and now that i've tried it i won't be installing it again until i have some official or stable installers/unninstallers.

MAYBE if i need to much i'll get it again before that...

There are two main issues with the boot flag being enabled on the 5d3:

* startup time is increased from 0.1 seconds to approx 1.2 seconds (without loading ML).  If loading ML from a card, the startup time is more like 1.7s.  This is the time from switching on the camera to being able to take the first shot, and crucially wake-from-sleep takes exactly the same amount of time, which is a PITA for stills shooters.
* you can't use EyeFi cards in a camera that has the boot flag enabled.

There is currently no way to disable the boot flag on the 5d3 once enabled AFAIK.

It's 700d...

General Help Q&A / Re: Silent Picture Resolution

Because that's the aspect ratio than canon decided to use for the screen LV buffer

Besides, define "normal" there are many different "normal" aspect ratios (3:2, 4:3, 5:4, 5:3, 1:1, 16:9, 16:10, 2.54:1, etc) which one should be given preference?

Just crop it

or don't be so afraid to use your shutter, the shutter is your friend :)

It's not a question of disliking the shutter.... but when someone's assleep or you're at a cerimony and you've deniftely need silence... silent picture would awseome... i could use my phone for these pictures, but it's ridiculous that a phone can do something that these cameras can't...

Anyway... the problem is that the pictures in movie mode come out with aspect ratio correct... and in photo mode (P, AV, M...) it comes out with a distorted look... (squeezed)

Fine it's a screenshot in RAW format.. but why the wicked resolution.. why can't i have it normal aspect ratio??

Ok... i found the raw video module.. loaded ok

But i still can find a High Res Silent picture mode...

Is there any way to alter this resolution? i mean... even the crop marks are like 16:9 style... and i'm in photo mode... (normal photos come out normal... only silent pictures come out with that 1734x693 resolution

Why are you so worried about removing the bootflag?  It doesnt' affect the camera, just tells it to look for a bootable card.  If you don't want ML, just format the card on your computer and your camera will operate normally as from Canon.

I know that.

And i'm not "screwed" per se

It's just that i thought it would be a clean unninstalation, so that if i encounter any future problems (not directly related to ML) i can easily send it to Canon without worrying that they will come back to me and say.. "it's firmware was tempered so we won't fix it"

I just like to have that option you know?

But... c'est la vie

Wait a second... when you refer to *.fir file... did you mean the original canon firmware update file... or the one that came with the magic lantern nightly build?

Because if it is the original... that is why i can't get rid of it.. because i'm using the one that came with the bootflaged magic lantern. If that is the case.. i still don't have any update file... and therefore... i'm screwed.

To disable the bootflag in the camera you must put the .fir file back in the card and do a firmware update (assuming that ML is running right now and bootflag is enabled).  I this does not work then you could bypass ML pressing the set button on boot and then do the firmware update.

Remember that you must do a card reader format in order to disable the bootflag of the card.

I only own a 5D3 and a 7D so I cannot confirm this procedure for your camera.  Maybe someone who owns such model can help you..

Ok I'm charging my battery now.. but just to be clear on your instructions:

I already have the *.fir file in the card (it was never deleted...) should i remove everything and leave the *.fir file only??? (no ML folder or autoexec.bin).
Or should i prepare the same files/folders  in the card and go into EOSCArd utility like when i installed the first time?

General Help Q&A / Re: Remove bootflag

Ok.. let me see if I understood this...

I grabed my sd card, low level formated, copy the nightly build that included the *.firm file for 700d and used the EOScard utility (manually) by checking the bootdisk and EOS develop... write successfull (only one *.firm file in the card)

When to my camera... firmware update.. and installed the magic lantern (because if i didn't went to firmware update the camera wouldn't read the software in the card).

Now if i erase the card and magic lantern through menu Format Card... i will eliminate the magic lantern software
But from what i've heard and tried, i f i put files back in the card like i did in the beggining... and when i go back to my camera, i DON'T need to go to firmware update... because it's already installed in the camera!! (like you said... process only needed to be done once)

SO... i tried the instruction of unninstall in firmware update menu
Pressed ok... goes back to main menu and tells me "enablebootflag :)" and magic lantern is not operating
Turning off camera and back on gets magic lantern working AGAIN (so... it's not and on-off process because it's still there)
I never get to the green instruction screen

HOW can i remove the bootflag from camera...??

the only possible solution but i still haven't tried would be
go the firmware update and wait for "enablebootdisk :)" message, and then format the card without turning it off....
But I seriously doubt (from what i've seen in youtube  concerning unninstalling bootflag) that this would be the right procedure

goto canon menu, go to firmware update, get the screen to show ML booted... turn off then on n do the same, then when got green screen change to another mode (P,Av) turn camera off... remove card format on a COMPUTER...

I went to canon menu... firmware update... and i check OK to update... it shows up a screen saying loading for 1 second and then after a while it goes back to the main menu and says: "enable bootdisk :)" and it seems that magic lantern is bypassed (like when we turn on the camera and leave "set" key pressed.

BUT if turn it off and on again or if it resumes from auto power off... magic lantern will be loaded again normaly...

i NEVER get to that green screen...

please.. help...

General Help Q&A / Remove bootflag (700D/T5i)
September 17, 2013, 04:19:07 PM
I've recently bought the 700d and now i've decided to try the magic lantern software...

I follow the instructions and used the build 700D.111-16082013-ML.zip which someone posted here and everything was installed

But now i've wanted to unninstal it... and i can't use this instruction

Uninstalling ML from the camera
BootdiskDisabled
With a Magic Lantern card, launch the Firmware Update process and follow the instructions on-screen.

Because it just comes back to the main menu without any instruction screen...

I've already remove the magic lantern from the card but as soon as i put the files back in the card the camera boots it ut without even need to reinstal it (which i believe it means that it's bootflag is up and running)

How can I remove it??

General Help Q&A / Silent Picture Resolution
September 17, 2013, 03:28:21 PM
Hi... i'm very noob in this matter so please, don't judge me...

I've recently bought the 700d and now i've decided to try the magic lantern software...
One thing that i really wanted was the silent picture function
I've managed to set it through the ML menu, and i can't easily take them and store the DNG files in the card,,, no problem there.

However, they comewith a strange resolution of something like 1734x693 (in photo mode) and with a correct aspect ratio (1734*1156) in movie mode.. and they are awful...
Is there any way to change this quality and resolution before taking the silent pics? (and yes.. i've already use the pink dot remover... but most of it still stays in the picture...).. my main concern is the resolution issue

thks
