Camera-specific Development / Re: Canon 650D / T4i
April 14, 2017, 10:39:28 AM
Hey guys,

after a long flawless life of Magic Lantern, I got some blue screens on April 1st, saying my camera is bricked. Thinking it was an April fool's joke, I re-entered the battery and got another one after a couple of hours. I updated to the latest nightly build, Mar30. Since then, no errors, just a random freeze yesterday.

Any ideas?

Hey guys!

I have already installed magic lantern at its early phase and updated it with 1.04 firmware, with a fast 32GB card, no problem at all!

I would like to get a bigger 64GB card, do you face any problems with them? Is there anything I should be aware of, or I just copy and paste the ML files on a 64GB card? If not possible or tricky, I should go for 2 32GB.

Thanks ;)

tip: slightly unscrew the lens while holding the DOF preview button to lock the aperture in place

(this is also in the actual ML help text at the bottom)

Also, what are you using for post processing, Lr? Check your settings, if you are using heavy highlight recovery or clarity you can get flicker (also some other things too I think). Try processing with no corrections at all and see if you still get flicker. (Tip: you can use curves rather than the highlight slider to avoid flicker). From looking at your video, the flicker doesn't seem strong enough to be a change in expo settings, so I doubt its anything ML is doing. To me it looks like aperture flicker, or possible result of post processing.

I didn't notice that, until I fell into this problem. Unscrewing is probably the solution. I did some shots in the past, but as I remember, mostly with almost wide open, that's why I got flicker free results.

There is no post process in the images individually, but in the whole sequence itself (JPGs), done in After Effects. Slight curves edit, no heavy processing.

Hi avramidis3d, from what I've read there are many sources of flicker and one of them is inconsistencies in the physical movement of the the aperture blades in your lens because each time your camera takes a photo it goes from fully open to whatever aperture you've set. There are also changes in lighting that might cause flicker etc. etc. I've started using LRTimelapse software to deflicker and it's been the only way I've managed to create a half decent timelapse no matter what I did when shooting. The free version lets you process up to 400 images in a single set. It's easy to use but it is designed to have Lightroom in the workflow. The main function is to smooth out your exposures to eliminate (significantly deminish) flicker.

Thanks for the info, I'll check it out. I'm already using Lightroom.

On the hardware part, I've used in the past external intervalometers with success, almost no flickering. Even shooting manually, didn't have this kind of flickering. It seems like image autocorrection or a false feedback light metering. One of the latest ML updates (1 Oct or 30 Sep) there's a exposure correction setting, right under intervalometer. I'll check it out and see what I can come up with.

Thinking about that, I'm seeing this mostly on daily shots, where I use bigger F values (closer apperture). Night shots, are mostly with bigger time values and even if this aperture related flickering applies, it nearly disappears due to large time exposure. I'll keep that in mind, thanks again. ;)

Hey guys,

I'm a newbie here, so treat me gently. :)

It's a couple of months I installed ML in 650D, never used it before, no experience with ML in previous cameras. I needed it mostly for the digital ISO and the intervalometer, totally basic staff (for the beginning).

In a few timelapse shots I got, I noticed some flickering. All my auto correction settings in Canon settings were off (no lens aberration correction, no auto lighting optimizer), shooting in M mode, fixed F, speed and WB.
Is there something I miss that kinda autocorrects the image in ML and did this kind of flickering? It's noticeable especially in the first sunset part of the timelapse.

Shot with 16Sep build.

Thanks in advance!
