General Chat / Re: Canon DSLR line is dead
« on: July 23, 2020, 11:14:06 AM »
Imagine a world, where all you had to do is bring a camera and a laptop. Instead of your camera writing to an SD card, your camera transfers 12K RAW footage straight to your laptop's harddrive where your laptop automatically starts to converts the footage into proxys or h.266 files or whatever.

That is why we need wifi on a camera.
While for functionality I agree with you, having WIFI and wireless transmitters open up a whole new can of worms on cameras:
Namely surveillance tracking and potential information leaks. If you read Snowden's autobiography you know that these threats are very real. (wifi triangulation, hardware backdoors etc.)
So all in all no, I rather not have wifi and keep my photos and location for myself. :) Or, even better have a physical switch for it, so  you can do remote shooting if needed.

Camera-specific Development / Re: Canon 600D / T3i
« on: February 05, 2017, 09:08:42 AM »
Hey guys, I haven't been messing around with ML for a great while now, I just decided to blow th dust off my 600D and get the latest ML release. So far so good, but there is one thing about the new releases that really bug me: every time I hit the trashbin button and enter the ML menu, Canon's own menu pops up for a really short time. It's not a great deal breaker for me, never the less it's annoying to see every time I enter the menu.
How long has this been around? Would it be realy difficult to get rid of it?

Also, congrats with the 10/12 bit raw guys!

General Help Q&A / Re: 600D Video Digital Zoom
« on: December 20, 2014, 08:04:59 PM »
There is no point in using digital magnification over 3x. What 3x does is taking the middle part of the sensors and using the central pixels only - therefore there is no image quality loss.
Any zoom over 3x is completely pointless as it magnifies already existing information only - it means loss in image quality, thus it should be avoided.
If you NEED to zoom into the video you can do it in post.

I'm not sure why or how but I dig this short quite much, there is something zen about it.. it's not trying to force-feed you its narrative, but lets you find your own angle to what you see.
Or just a spontaneous drive by with a conceptua ending? I don't know but I enjoyed it. :) Nice aesthetics too.

You could get a GTX 660 for that price, these ones are over the 5xx's in specs, equipped with a more modern architecture.
I've got an ASUS edition and it works great.

General Help Q&A / Re: FPS Override Overexposure under 5fps
« on: September 14, 2014, 03:28:33 AM »
This is not only normal, but generally desired as it is useful for low light scenarios and gives you a nice creamy motion blur.
You are in "low light" mode in FPS override, this feature increases the exposure time of every frame accordingly.
You will either got to get an ND filter, or simply switch to "exact frame" mode.

General Help Q&A / Re: Shooting 50fps for Dummies

Why don't you try that before asking it?
The answer is: yes. Also, you got to be in 720p mode.

you missed the point...

Thanks for sharing this Kharak, I loved it!
Awesome tinkering project, but...
What is actually the point?
If construction / modding lenses, then sure, it's great, but in regards to it's general usefulness caculo has a point.
I mean, you can get the same IQ, or even better with a macro-extended prime, isnt it so?

Raw Video / Re: Uncompressed 14-bit RAW video testing - 5D Mark III
« on: September 05, 2014, 07:02:15 PM »
hi DPmikey, I once had the same problem. The possible reason could be that Resolve color corrects certain frames and certain remain. This causes the flash (corrected and original flashing). Click "ouput field as single source" in General Option under Master Setting. This would work as it worked for me for a while. I got the problem again. It is definitely to do with frame rate per second settings. Now, after I start using Resolve LITE, I face NO problem. It is all fine.... Hope that helps.

this is a wonderful thread for 5d3 guys, I hope there will be more conversation in here.
I used to have the same problem with Resolve 10 - regardless of what frame rates I rendered and etc - , ever since I downloaded 11 the problem has been fixed.

Camera-specific Development / Re: Canon 50D
« on: August 30, 2014, 08:37:22 PM »
Hi all,

hope someone can help me figure this out. Sorry for newb question.. I have searched and researched but can't explain it.

So the 50D is only supposed to be able to record in 1568×882. Yet my ML menu only gives me 1920x1080 or 640x480  both 30FPS as options... I'm not in crop mode when i record and VLC claims the video is 1920x1080..

Which is the liar :) ? What am i missing?
where can i select 24fps?

Thanks for the help
Szevasz!
If you can open your files with vlc then it's completely certain you are not recording raw, but h264. What is the extension of the files? MLV or RAW are the rawvideo formats.
You know how to enter the ML menu, right?

HDR and Dual ISO Postprocessing / Re: Pink highlights

Thanks! 8) What was the problem, clipping due to overflowing data?

What are compositions you don't like? Can you point me to the min/sec in the video so that I can look it up.

If with "missing headroom" you're referring to this one than I have to say this was intentional:

more on my tumblr: http://sebastiankubatz.tumblr.com

We are talking composition now, which can get pretty subjective, here is my take on it:
I think some shots "cropping into" the actress is fine, but generally this composition gives me a somewhat claustrophobic vibe.. and lacks the release with the openess (it's not only that hear headroom is missing, but her head is cut)
In the timeline just see the 0:26 -  0:42 period, I was keep waiting for some space and it did not happen..
Not sure what emotional charge you were going for but I think this 4-5 different cuts with the same crop thing is bringing it too far.

Could you share some lines about the grading you did here? I really dig it and I'm just about to get to learn resolve / proper raw processing.

14
Hey man, a picture of your construction would be great, sounds like a pretty daring and successful diy project!

As for the video: I love the concept, good to see you don't mind getting wet for a cool video. I really like some of the compositions, while some others not so much - she was missing headroom fx - is this due to shooting in crop mode? Also, I think you should try to put some attention to getting some smoother moves, sure having your camera underwater is quite a challenge I imagine.
I love the grading you did, powerful look!

Try some older nightlies, I have one from approx 3 weeks ago, that has the feature (although kinda buggy)

It sounds like BarracudaGUI may be designed only for handling dual-ISO photos (which would saved by the camera as a CR2 file), rather than also frames from dual-ISO movies (which would be converted by MLV tools to DNG files).  Try cr2hdr.

Nope, BarracudaGUI converts CR2 files like a charm, the only problem is that he hasn't even tried importing the cr2 files into it.

For DPmikey: instead of importing files through the interface just drag and drop files into BarracudaGUI from the folder the CR2 files are located. If this still doesn't work you got to get a newer version of it, because it works on my system.

17
Correct,  but card speed specs usually are aimed at read not sustained write speed and sustaining speed is key thats why I said 95mb/s. As an owner of 550D I find 45mb/s inconsistent  particularly with the SRM module double recor times.
In my experience if I warm up the card prior to shooting (this might be one MLV sequence as well) I get steadily high writing speeds.

18
no not how they are connected, how do I get CR2 files. I just haven't found a good workflow tutorial on how to get Dual ISO. I got dual iso on(with my preferred A and B ISO's selected) then I shoot the video ( in a slightly dim room) I then get the card in the computer and open up MLV_VIEWER and get the file off the card as DNG. So where Do I go from here? I have a folder with the following inside : CR2hdr, bARRACUDAgui, dcraw, exiftool, raw2dng.
Go grab BarracudaGUI, a pretty neat GUI for handling dual iso files. It will ask for a link for cr2hdr (which can convert your dng files), and so on, then click convert and there you go, really user friendly.

Modules Development / Re: Full-resolution silent pictures

Yes, ofc. Lets hope u r right. Right now i cant go under 5s intervall :/
Me neither, but I got to say this 5-6 sec delay gives quite a charming flicker to the video. First time I've seen it it's quite a nice change from the creamy-smooth timelapses I'm used to through MLV timelapses.

20
I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the t3i only writes up to a speed of about 24 mb/s
The Sandisk 45 mb/s is plenty for the 600D.

Also, to OP: what card are you using right now? If something under 15 mb/sec or so don't be afraid your videorecording quickly gets stuck. A probable fix - without getting another card - for this is changing your framerate from 30 fps to 24.

21
how in the world are you guys getting CR2's? I set my ML dual iso ON, AND hdr ON, and hit record. got the same MLV file.. what am I missing here man...
How is RAW video connected with CR2's..?
CR2 is the camera's native raw file extension and you can get a dual iso'd CR2 with, well turning on dualISO and taking a photograph.

22
What an amazing sight!
Instinctively I expected it to be a timelapse video, but still, you had some great compositions.
As for the super moon, how often does this phenomena happen, how long does it last?

heil Poseidon!

Sorry? What do u wanted to say?
I'm saying that it's not only going to be beneficial for battery life, but also give the artistic tool of making timelapses more fluid (less segmented) aesthetically, because one frames will connect much closer to each other (not so much time lost between shots) :)

High Five for Greg!
I guess thats gonna save a lot battery life when you shooting Timelapse.
battery / and / make timelapses more fluent, connected due to not much time between shots

General Chat / Re: Best upgrade from Canon 650D
« on: August 10, 2014, 10:48:08 PM »
I have a 600D right now, so we are in a similar situation in a way. Now it of course comes down to economy, but instead of trying any halfway solutions - a 50D in crop mode would be quite fine actually - I will just save up and buy a 5d3 when the time comes.
Of course a 5d2 is a far more affordable solution (half the price used here in Denmark) I want to be able to record good quality stuff outside of crop mode as well (there are a few ways to piss me off, and moire and aliasing in my footage is one of them...) so I rather save longer, but buy the 5d3 then. Also, a 5d4 is rumoured, GH4's and A4s' flooding the market, so a drop in 5d3 value in the next half year or so is to be expected as well.
