I haven't heard of any apps for iPhone that support raw images; there was an app last year claiming to capture "raw" 4k video on the iphone 5 or 6, but it was only mjepg format due to the fact that the app functioned by taking 24 full res jpeg's per second.

Funny that I posted this thread today. They released an update for the Lightroom app and added a camera option, which also takes dng's. I plan on taking a few dng and jpeg samples for comparison, I'll upload those so we can see if dng format on a cell phone camera is really worth it. A full size jpeg on the Galaxy S6 is between 3-5 MB, whereas a full size dng is roughly 30 MB.

Since I haven't had any time this year to do any photography or video work, and not to mention that my phone is with me everywhere I go, I've found a few apps that enable the capture of raw (dng format) pictures on a few of the Android devices with android 5.1 or higher (requires the camera2 api).

One of these is a free app called FreeDcam, found at https://github.com/troop/FreeDcam. There are a few more but most of them cost a few dollars. Unfortunately, the Galaxy S6 I have doesn't yet have complete support for dng capture, so while the app is able to take dng's and view them, the default gallery doesn't recognize them, thus requiring another app like Lightroom or Photoshop to edit them.

Quality is another issue. The lenses on mobiles don't hold a candle to our wonderful L series or vintage primes, but fortunately they improve with every generation of phones. In lowlight, the shutter slows down to 1/10, which can be pretty annoying if you don't have image stabilization on. The Galaxy S6/Edge received pretty great scores on dxomark, so not all hope is lost.

Editing is straightforward, I've only tried a few dng's in the Photoshop mobile app but I felt like the images had a good amount of image information. Adjusting highlights, shadows and exposure responded very well, and the sharpening/NR adjustments were decent as well. I'll try to upload a few dng's if anyone is interested.

Maybe in the coming years, especially with mobile processors and cameras improving every year, we'll have raw video capabilities in the palm of our hands. It may even be possible now, depending on each phone's ability to dump raw data to memory quickly enough to give a decent resolution.

Sure, I have a couple good examples. It may take a while though, my internet connection is pretty spotty right now.

Very nice update, looks like it works correctly with squashed 7d footage. This seems to give us better scaling quality than what AE includes, presumably since it's the raw data that's being scaled. Do you have any insight on this, dmilligan? AE's detail-preserving upscale works well but only allows for the footage to be scaled to match the comp width or height, making this a great time-saver as well.

Thinking of upgrading from the 550D to the 7D. How long can you record in RAW at 1280x544 at 50fps and at 1280x720 in 50fps?

Great idea, but are you only looking for user-created luts? I've got plenty of free luts I've found on different sites, haven't made any myself, though.

I came across DNG QT as well while searching for format options. They discontinued it when they dropped fcpx support, IIRC they mainly design MXF tools. The biggest downside to shooting in raw is the need to convert to an intermediate for some programs, imo.

I've done a ton of research into color space, linear/log, Lut's and dcp's, etc. Visionlog is useful for some clips, but isn't too impressive color-wise when applying a log->Rec 709 Lut, even with their own Osirus Lut's. I've gotten decent results importing into AE with ACR and using the Camera Faithful profile, getting the footage to look as natural as possible, and applying a Log Lut, a Kodak or Fuji emulation Lut, and a couple of look Lut's with their respective adjustment layers set as either hue or color blending instead of overlay. And I've found that lowering the primary blue hue slider -20 or so on the faithful profile gives the footage a nice teal tint similar to film.

That workflow helps me to match raw with 60p 720 h264 clips, but I've always wondered if I should even bother with a linear space, seeing as how film is not linear, and that's the look I want to achieve. Haven't delved into OCIO yet or had the chance to try out Cinelog but I can definitely see that you have a near-perfect workflow designed for color management. Now all we need is for our color information to be predictable across all programs. I'm not too hopeful though, even QuickTime manages to screw up gamma and color on their own damn .mov's lol.

I remember a QT/mov-style wrapper being talked about, but with FCPX adding MXF support it would be great to have either. Of course, Black Magic could always adopt the MLV container and save the trouble  8)

It seems like the specs and metadata are pretty similar for most of the raw or uncompressed video containers, so having superb quality across the major digital cinema camera lineup would all but make obsolete the headaches of getting h264 8 bit to match raw footage. But only if everyone grades with Cinelog, of course!

I recall reading about a CDng wrapper that Black Magic was designing, having the convenience of staying in the same format from start to finish is very appealing to me. I hope they still have plans for it.

Sorry guys, been crazy busy with life lately, I've hardly been on my computer in 3 weeks :o

Dianne, yeah the highest Rez I could manage was 1728x694, for somewhere around 10-15 seconds. It's the same quality as normal non-crop raw video, it's a great improvement over the squashed slo mo raw as far as aliasing and artifacts go. I posted a couple of comparison pics in the 7d thread.

I haven't had anyone confirm this yet, deafeye, so feel free to prove that I'm not crazy or senile ;D

Shot over the course of a few months at different performances around the state. 7D, Rokinon 35mm cine, recorded mostly in 2.2k and 2.5k MLV.

Converted with MLVFS, rendered through After Effects with ACR, edited with FCPX. Osirus Lut's for color grading. Really pleased with the skin tones and the stage lighting, the color reproduction we get with raw files is beautiful. I also wrote the beginning and ending monologues.

Whoa, I thought this whole time the squashed video height in Canon 720p mode was intentional to allow cameras with slower storage to get wider resolutions.  This isn't intentional?

It's really strange that Canon's default 720p h264 mode can record 60fps with no squashing, but ML raw in 720/60 mode is squashed even with custom resolutions set well below 720p and FPS set well below 30.  Assuming the 7D Mark II eventually gets an ML port, I wonder if that will be the first camera to record 1080p60 raw without squashing (given its 1080p60 h264 mode) or if it will have the same problem when set to 1080p60 mode.
Besides advanced methods used in the adtg-gui module, ML really can't control the line-skipping in non-crop mode, which causes the squashed look in high fps. I found a glitch on 7d that allows for 48 fps raw video that doesn't need stretching in post, haven't been able to push it up to 60 fps though.

Rokinon 35mm manual cine lens

After messing with it a little bit more, the black and white levels get all wacky sometimes and the exposure is super glitchy. At first, I noticed this while testing out different settings in 640x480 mode, going to do some more tests soon as I charge my battery.

:edit: Yeah definitely a bug in the fps override control. I just downloaded the latest nightly, same thing. How exactly does fps override cause LV to stretch? Or is this a new feature I completely missed?!

:edit2: Ok, just figured out that this bug has been in the nightly since 7d fps override was implemented.

:edit3: To fix this issue, Timer A needs to be set to 498 (FT +76) for 23.976 exact and 440 (FT +10) for 60 exact.
Here are two frames from these settings. The first frame is with the modified fps settings, opened in MLVFS and rendered out into jpg through LR with no editing done. The second is normal 48 fps override, distorted frame rendered the same way. And also a screenshot of MLVFS to verify that it's 48 fps. Camera was mostly in the same position, with same exposure settings. Looks like the dng's get stretched downward, the top of each frame is in the same place. Interesting...



This is definitely going to come in handy, it's not quite 60 fps but the aliasing is very minor compared to a stretched dng.

Picture styles don't alter the raw signal in any way. Basically the only use for them in my experience is to assist in exposure and wb and being able to use the same picture style calibration in ACR for a similar look to what you previewed on the camera lcd while recording.
Visionlog is tricky, try using the natural picture style in ACR first to nail down your white balance and exposure, then switch over to Visionlog. Applying the lut in an adjustment layer and adjusting opacity and layer blending options helps as well.
I may be wrong, but using ACR through Bridge only allows you to save a sidecar xmp file for dng adjustments, allowing you to leave the original untouched and just exporting your edit. It's really designed for still photography, but importing a dng sequence through ACR into After Effects allows you to work around this.

Try MLVFS. Has built-in support for dual iso, is kept up-to-date and is (imo) the most straight-forward workflow.

First, make sure that the "skip frames" option in the mlv menu is off. Transfer the mlv's to your computer and then use MLRawviewer to render to dng's and the wav at the same time.

When rendering to an image sequence, make sure to use the exact same fps that the mlv was recorded with, it's all too easy to render a 23.976 file to 24p by accident. And don't forget to zoom in to your FCPX timeline when placing the wav at the beginning of the sequence.
