Anamorphic setting?

Interesting. What kind of a prism or mirror system do you have in that double lens? Care to show us a sketch or photo of the construction?

Or is this an early April-fools joke? ;)

Photographers pay thousands of dollars to get wide aperture lenses for portraits on full-frames

Not to make you green with envy, but I happen to own a Leica Thambar 90mm f/2.2 soft-focus portrait lens... one reason for buying the EOS-M was to use this lens!

Here's what it can do:

Here's a test shot with the Canon TV Zoom 12.5-75mm f/1.8, shot at f/5.6 - note that the "jell-o" is from warm, turbulent air; it was -15°C outside :

No, I didn't mean the vertical flashing airplane trails, but the dots in the star trail arcs themselves. An artifact of combining images, perchance?

One more question: In the star trail 28mm photo, there are some white dots on some of the brighter trails. How come?

Damn it's sexy.

Just ordered one for 20 euros...    ;D

Is that video shot full frame, or 3x crop?

Thank you for the fantastic images! You know, this was the first time I've seen the Horsehead and the Orion Nebula in the same frame - and still great resolution!

I've only dabbled, but I have a nice lens in a 1960s Meyer Orestegor 135 mm f/2.8 - I'll have to do some more experimenting when the weather gets a little warmer - -15°C in Helsinki right now!

(Incidentally, I only have a cheap Meade with the Autostar alt-az computer control, but it has sufficed so far, tracking my EOS 550D, and it will certainly manage the new, much lighter EOS-M! I turned a camera holder to fit in the eyepiece tube, so it balances pretty well.)

What software do you use for stacking?
#83
In any case, the moires are gone!

Thanks to the whole team for a fantastic piece of software!

Here's a picture of before/after; to get the same image area, I have to be either 3x further back, or use a 3x wider lens. In this case, the former. Contrast and saturation upped to clearly show the improvement (100% crops of actual frames) :

It hung up for me while switching on with a C-mount lens. Needed to take out battery and restart with a non-ML card.

Warning: Do not boot the camera with a manual lens, it will (may?) hang!
#86
Header says it all, really:

"ML boot hangs on EOS-M with manual lens"

This happened even when I changed to the Canon 22mm lens. So, I waited until the orange light stopped blinking, then took out the battery.

FIX:
When I start with a non-ML card and the original Canon lens on the camera instead of a C-mount, everything appears normal again, except that 3x movie crop is still on, and size and quality icons are grayed out in photo mode - but can be changed in menus. 3x crop will only disappear when changing movie size; photo quality & size icons will then reappear.

Conclusion: Since I need ML only for 3x movie crop, I can set it with ML and 22mm lens, then change to non-ML card, and continue to have 3x crop. I must not change movie fps - if I do, I need to boot from an ML card and re-set 3x crop.

This may be an old thread, but I've successfully adapted many C-mount and CCTV lenses to the EOS-M.

You definitely need to shoot in crop mode.

Speaking of fun, this Canon 7.5 - 97.5mm f/1.4 ENG TV camera 13x Zoom was fun to adapt to the EOS-M, even though the quality is nothing to write home about:

PS: That shadow at lower left in mid-zoom is gone, now, had to rotate the lens 45° to get it to the bottom, outside the frame...

I was able to get it to work by copying the FONTS.DAT file from another place. But this was the EOS-M version.

Don't expect the Fujian to be stellar...

I have lots of CCTV lenses, none is tack sharp at full aperture, a lot of spherical aberration and some coma. Stop down to 5.6 or so, and they get good.

Having checked the size of the recorded image, it looks like even the 1920x1080 (h264) is scaled up from 1728x972 !

I wonder why it's not pixel-by-pixel 1920x1080 from the sensor, that would not require the scaling...
#91
It appears (but I'm not sure) that the video produced in crop mode is scaled up from 1728 pixels wide to 1920 pixels wide, i.e. the end result isn't a pixel-by-pixel image.

Can anybody confirm this?

(I'm not talking RAW here, just ordinary, compressed .MOV video...)

"The M can't go above 1728"

Eh? At least it looks like I'm getting full-HD 1920x1080 from mine... even at 1.5x bit rate.

Or are you talking about RAW?

"The lens is probably soft at wide apertures anyway"

You are correct. Stop down a couple of clicks, and it's much better.

"What's the highest picture you can film in 3xmode on an eos m?"

What do you mean by "highest"? In pixels, Mbps, or meters, or feet? ;)

I have adapted some C-mount lenses to the EOS-M, and thanks to ML, they cover the entire image area when using the 3x video crop!

This is a Canon TV Zoom, 12.5-75 mm f/1.8:

Here's a cute little 8mm CCTV lens on the EOS-M:

Without the crop, this is what it provides:

Here's a cropped video - note that any 8mm lens intended for the full C-frame would be a huge chunk of glass! But with this tiny lens, I can get a wide coverage in a very small package, thanks to the 3x crop!

The video is a bit soft, since it was shot with the f-stop almost wide open, and my follow-focus wasn't too precise... and, it's shaky, to boot! But that will have to do for a first test...;)

Thanks!

Got it to work, but a big problem at first, the FONTS.DAT file was missing in the magiclantern-v2.3.NEXT.2014Jan16.EOSM202 package, but I found it in another...

I love the 3x video crop feature, it fits my huge 7.5 - 97.5 mm  f/1.4 Canon TV zoom perfectly!

Here's the setup - rather comical looking, remember that that lens was originally on a huge, 11 lbs. ENG camera... ;)

Thank you - I saw those pages during my searches - but with 2000+ posts, I couldn't wade through them all, and I didn't find what I looked for, i.e. a download & user guide for newbies.   :-[

Am I correct in assuming ML isn't supported for the EOS-M anymore, you have to use TL? Couldn't find any instructions, download links etc for TL, either.

One important question: Is there a video crop mode available? I have lots of 16mm camera C-mount lenses that physically fit the EOS-M, but need cropping during shooting. If there is no such mode, ML or TL isn't very interesting anymore...

Here's a strange thing: On the box my EOS-M came in, there is (was, now ;) ) a little white sticker covering one of the advertised features; 3-10x movie digital zoom - that's what I'm looking for, and Canon left it out!!!

Hi!

I bought an EOS-M two weeks ago; a wonderful camera, a fantastic 22mm lens.

I've been searching this forum for hours, but can't seem to find basic instructions on how to install ML on my camera. (I use Mac OS X 10.6.8.)

Thus, I registered!

Could anyone kindly point me in the right direction; links to any relevant pages would be very welcome!

Greetings from Finland, where we finally have got some snow and cold weather !
