JUST TO UPDATE EVERYONE:

I got the memory card I mentioned in the beginning of this post with the 95 MB/s speed and when recording at bit rates above CBR 1.4x with audio enabled, it still stops recording after maybe 5 seconds or so. But I can, however, record all the way up to CBR 3.0x WITHOUT AUDIO smoothly and without the card stopping at all.

So it definitely is a MAJOR improvement over my last card which was only a 24MB/s card.

In a "perfect world", audio would be recorded in its own external device not built in to the camera anyway, so for controlled situations such as interviews, landscape shots, and whatnot where you would have a lav mic into a recorder on the interviewee or just the device to pick up ambient noise.

General Help Q&A / ISO 80 for video grainier than 160?
August 31, 2012, 05:43:33 AM
I don't know if its just me or something, but for some reason, ISO 80 seems to be quite grainy when recording video. This is using the standard picture style, no adjustments. Maybe that is my problem or something. I've only ever seen it being used on picture styles with low contrast and 0 sharpness.

Should I just go back to using 160 or am I just seeing things?

General Help Q&A / Re: Bitrate increasing
August 31, 2012, 05:21:54 AM
Yeah, I'm afraid so :(
That card still doesn't have a fast enough write speed to be stable enough to shoot higher bit rates.
In fact, I have that same memory card and even sometimes in standard 1.0x CBR (the Canon default setting) it stops recording because the card is not fast enough.
One thing you can do though to shoot short bursts of higher bit rate video is to disable your audio. I am able to record all the way up to 3.0x at times for a minute or two with the audio disabled. But that being said, you could just use an external recorder to capture even better quality audio anyway and then just sync that track up to your video in post.

But back to your memory card problem. You'd need a faster card. This might be overkill but this is what I'm saving up for.

Sand Disc Extreme Pro 95 MB/s

It's just about double the card we have now so it should definitely help with that problem. Still havent gotten one myself though, so not certain.

I am very interested in using the higher bit rate options such as the CBR mode between 1.6x to 3.0x and such, but my Class 10 24MB/s 16GB memory card cannot handle the footage as expected.

Would I be able to safely shoot 3.0x video (without audio) under non extreme conditions (ISO 80 - 160) possibly with a Class 10 95MB/s 32GB memory card such as this one?
