Don't know why you want them, but here are some screen grabs.

Original 960x540  lossless .avi from AE

Upscaled to 1080p using Magic Bullet Instant HD

I'm confused sorry, where did you get those pics? Is you the author of this youtube video (the music is awesome remember me the movie "Paris, Texas") ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97hdf0lzEbQ

Hi 1% thanks for all the work you've done.

The link to the raw2dng-nostripe is no longer working. Would love to try it out if it's still available.

Thanks.

That was an extreme upscale and don't recommend it for production use.  Also, alot of the artifacting is probably due to youtube compression.  The original looks much cleaner.

please can you give me some example, something to see with my eyes shot with the 600D? thank you if it's possible.

I used SanDisk Extreme SDHC 45mb/s cards, 16GB & 32GB. The 90mb/s cards don't make a difference because of the internal write limit of 20mb/s, although it will help copying the files from the card onto the computer via internal card reader or USB3/thunderbolt readers. But I wouldn't go below 45mb/s either just to be sure.

Some tips would be to prepare yourself, know the ins and outs of using RAW, what settings you use, etc. What I tend to do is use ND-filters so I can open up my lenses all the way which purposefully creates a softer image (depending on the quality of lenses you use, I use vintage lenses) which will help a little in getting rid of moire and aliasing. Just as with H264, the lower the ISO, the cleaner, sharper and better your image will look. Also make sure you've got the knowledge and experience of handling the post process (conversion, proxies, grading, editing).
I convert using raw2cdng, note the c which stands for CinemaDNG. Those work natively with DaVinci Resolve which you can use to grade and create proxies. The latest version of Resolve doesn't have any issues with pink dots or dead pixels anymore. My footage looks absolutely wonderful in it. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask :) Maybe other people can learn a thing or two as well.

Settings I used:

Audio OFF (We used a Zoom H4n for external audio)
Canon menu --> Video mode --> 640x480 (30p)
FPS override to 23.976 fps
Global Draw OFF (no ML histrograms, camera settings, waveforms, focus peaking or zebras, etc)
RAW Video: 1408x528 (2,67:1), buffer warm-up 32mb, no extra hacks, canon preview mode (~240-250 frames)

What I also found was that oddly enough official Canon batteries work better. The first part of the shoot I used my original battery which gave me the full 10 seconds I needed but in the middle I changed battery to a cheaper alternative and it all of a sudden couldn't record longer than 100 frames. I don't know if that was my fault or it not being warmed up or just coincidence, but I grabbed the official battery from our BTS camera.

you are really kind :)
thank you my fiend. I wish to ask you one last advice if it's possible. I'll try to explain in short, have been passed some years since I started to
economize my money to buy a DSLR to make video for cinema. since Magic Lantern has RAW I lost my plans about what to buy, because anything I knew about DSLR body, ISO noise, models, were lost. Now I wanted RAW and my research started from scratch again.
I wish to buy the 600D because it's relatively affordable. And I can use the rest of my money for video tripod, redhead lights, mics. But I have not understand how nice is the quality of the RAW video when it's done and is upscaled to 1080p.
I will try to produce short films and I'll try to show my shots in movie theaters for short film festivals. I believe that sub HD is not a problem because the detail of the RAW is very good also in Sub HD. But I have not understand if we can notice pixel when watching those videos.

how good it's for example 960x540 upscaled to 1080p? can you notice pixel like this image at the edge of the shapes?
I have got the sample from youtube (600D raw video).

those pixels moves and can generate distraction to the people who see them.

I personally haven't experienced it a lot, not at all in fact. I recently shot a post-apocalyptic short film in 1408x528 RAW on the 600D and out of the 70 or so shots there was one shot that had a pink first frame, which is easily removed since the clapboard was in the frame so I didn't even need it. I had no aliasing or moire issues either. You have to practice using RAW a lot, test a lot of footage, test your lenses, test what duration works for you, test magic lantern settings, test ISO's, etc.
Thank you MrMehh, I was looking here for an answer very often since I asked my question. I really wish to say thanks to your help. Could I ask you some general advice/tips on the 600D raw shooting please? and which sd card do you use?
no aliasing and moire were obtained shooting at 5x? or with which camera settings?

thanks a lot again! have a good day! :)

like 1% said a cf is a must for raw. i have a 7D, which is and was a great DSLR long before ML was released for it. I think ML brought all canon DSLR to a whole new level. just gotta get audio rec working. well i just sync in post. With ML I think  it takes planning on any projects because the workflow in post is a bitch and takes a lot of time. " We choose to go to Magic Lantern not because its easy but because it is Hard. :D
thx, yes I can get a zoom h4n I have a little bit of experience about syncing audio it could be a solution without problems! :)

today I need raw to do practice with my photography studies in cinema, this is why I can take some time to work hard with it and I'm not scared.

50D/7D are the cheapest CF cams I think... maybe someone can get 40D up to speed eventually.
good morning 1% and thanks for your advices.

do you believe that shooting raw requires VAF (do I need to consider it in my budget)?
what do you think about RAW 960x540 upscaled to 1080p? is it equal for resolution to canon's native 1080p at h.264?

thx for your help. :)

Raw Video / can I ask you a little advice please?
September 29, 2013, 01:29:01 AM
I understand that today the market is changing, that maybe RAW is something that will be in some way "the future" in cinema also at low budget productions.
I need a camera to start making experiments in RAW. I have not so many money. Money are a problem for me today. I do not know if would be a safe idea to buy something like a BMPCC because it's really expansive for me, I can but I'm scared, and because maybe in 2 years it would be a very old hardware comparing to what seems will arrive soon (4k revolution etc, etc..).
So I wish go in cheaper way for some times do you agree can be a good idea?
I wish to ask which is better for RAW, 600D or 650D? and is it possible to obtain a clean image (no moire, no aliasing) in some way without having to buy a filter (VAF) which cost a lot of money?

thanks for help, sorry I really I do not know anymore what to do. I really I wish to start my studies as cinematographer, lighting and making a lot of experiments, I wish to do it in RAW because of the fidelity of its images. I would be really grateful for your help sirs.

Hey, it's very important to try and get an idea as what sounds on set you'll have to track... Ambient, dialog, "micro" sounds, etc... This is crucial for the mic range in particular...
thanks a lot for help, I need to take dialog indoor, outdoor, and at a certain distance sometimes! :)
#163
hello, I  need some devices to record the sound during shoots on short movies. I thought about a zoom h4n + 1 rode microphone, but which rode? and which would be the ideal audio gears to start taking sound on the film set? If you can give me an index I would be really grateful. Maybe they need something that I do not know.
thanks bye!

Raw Video / Re: 60D RAW video - it's working !!!
September 27, 2013, 01:36:35 AM
is true that 60D can shoot continuous recording at 1584x1058 at 24fps? which is the higher pixel resolution for RAW shooting in continuous recording on 60D in 16:9 (or close?) thx
#165
I know that rolling shutter on h264 made impossible some shots, like fast lights. does rolling shutter RAW do the same of h264 or it's better on RAW?

thanks

For photos, take the black correction algorithm from cr2hdr - it should help. If you upload some samples, I can try it.
Thanks A1ex I'm writing a message to a friend who is a cinematographer and is also registered on this forum. He should have some original files of RAW data filmed at 1728x972 (no crop mode) with VAF filter. the takes come from a very nice short film, but I wish to listen him before posting anything about his work.
As soon as possible and thanks again for help,

Dan

A dark frame should fix it. Look in the MLV thread, there are some tools that can subtract it.
Thank you A1ex I'll search for it. Do you know if there are Canon DSLRs wich does not suffer from this problem? What cause this?

I have got a pic from a 600D footage to explain well.

(I do not post image here because they are large)

I can see ugly vertical lines (more than my example) also on 7D RAW videos on Vimeo.  I do not know already about other models.
#168
I will try to post Images. But I'm almost sure that this problem is not only from 7D, I'll try to post something I hope I'm wrong. See you in a couple of days. Bye!
#169
Hello, I have noticed in RAW videos (n Vimeo, Youtube) ugly vertical lines in shadow and dark areas. I can post examples if you wish.
I saw those lines also on h264 footage (taken by me with a 7D). In very dark areas those vertical lines are there.

Is this a general problem of all canon DSLRs? Can it be fixed?

I wish to know if for cinematography this could be a serious problem.

Thanks.

If camera is set to stock 1080p and than cropped to get desired resolution in raw mode - yes, it works and works really good.

VAF works the same in every camera but of course particular VAF models work with the cameras they were designed for (because of the size and mount).

doesn't work good without crop?

Raw Video / RAW with VAF Filter
September 12, 2013, 11:34:05 AM
Hello, I wish to ask you if anyone have seen any footage/comparison of a RAW video shot with and without VAF filter.

I know that  the filter only works @1080p. RAW video on 7D, 5DII, 50D, 600D, etc, etc... are not @1080p. So how does/why it works if it works? And how good?

I admit I'm most interested to know how it works with a 7D because I need to buy one, but I believe the concept is applicable to different models.

Thx

I just shot an event video on a 5d Mkiii and a 7d, both shooting raw, all footage processed in Da Vinci.  The 5d stuff looked flawless.  As sharp as the C100, but with better color, and no compression issues.

The 7d stuff on the other hand, had purple fringes on all the highlights, and totally unusable aliasing and moire on most horizontal lines.  Short of a VAF filter or a stable implementation of the crop, I don't think I'd try to shoot this way again.

That being said, I still do prefer the look of the raw images to the h.264.  The work being done here is incredible.
Sorry I have not understand (because English is not my native language), are you saying that you have not tried yet  the 7D with VAF filters right?

This filter is my last hope. I cannot shoot in 5x because of space limitations.

Quote from: DragonFlame on September 12, 2013, 10:12:13 AM
If your willing to record in 5x mode then you will never see moire or alias issues, I'm considering getting a filter soon to test the performance with 1x mode but I'm almost certain that it will just decrease but not completely remove it in 1x mode.

As for professional use I would ask what camera alternative at the same price range would you consider?
I don't know of any I would like to buy that can do what the cannon cameras can atm and not break an average consumers wallet, if you can afford a 5d3 then yes it will be a better option but its also a lot more expensive for what I consider minor improvements, I would only recommend people spend the extra if you have cash to throw around, the black magic is another but I personally hated the camera design even tho the image is reasonable.

Am I planning to use the 7D professionally? Yes indeed I will be, have I yet? No not yet due to some limitations that are mostly just due to the fact the firmware is in alpha and needs some love which I'm happy it has been getting a lot in the last month.

I agree with you on the price factor but I need to wash that moire and aliasing (seen in that video) off if I want to work with this. I'm going to spend 700 euros, I never have spend so much money before to be honest. I need to know if with 200+ euros for a VAF filter then I can work with this camera. It's almost 1000 euros in total.

I haven't encountered any moire in 7d raw with my mosaic filter installed.  And I shot a local commercial on it so I think professionals can definitely make use of it.

are you sure it's the mosaic filter that give the boost? maybe it could be the same with or without?

can you show me some footage please? that would be definitely what could make me buy the 7D. :)
