Update Canon firmware = 1.1.6
Delete ML dir, Autoexec.bin and *.fir from card and copy extracted nightly build contents to card.

Thank you, will try when im home tonight. what new goodies are there to play with since sept build?
#2
hey guys been awhile since i have updated my magic lantern on my 6D.

Im kind of lost basically, what i have is tragic lantern last build from sept 2014-09-26 6D FW 1.1.3,
I have the SD card set with working tragic lantern.

What is the process to update to 6D FW1.1.6 with the latest ML build?

Also if i update to the Latest ML build for FW 1.1.3, can i just replace the bin exe files on the SD card?

Is it worth going over to FW1.1.6? or i can just use the ML FW 1.1.3 build

Thanks in advance

Thanks Audionut, i miss understood i thought more difference in iso e.g 100-6400 iso would give you more dynamic range.  Thank you for clearing that up.
Just to clarify what best setup for 3 shots ?
3 shots
Dual iso 100/800
8 EV part? Or 6EV part?

I'll try doing some tests tomorrow as sun gone down now :(

Thanks Audionut

Hi Audionut
i did some tests, with taking 3 shots @ 8EV dual iso 100/6400.
And my control test taking 9 shots at 2EV part

I took both hdri images and then exposed them in photoshop about the same. Now i know that dual iso reduces resolution and will create mosaicing artifacts which im not bothered about. what im looking for how much information the hdri has. As in the exposure information. As you can see from my attached image looks like 3 shots might not be enough i will try with 4shots/ 5shots. You can see the colors going weird and haloing with 3 shots.

I have processed through Photoshop merge to hdri.

The bottom 2 or 3 stops of an image (including dual_iso), are usually very noisy.  Probably better to work under the assumption of 10 stops of useable dynamic range, and take three images at 0 EV, -9 EV and -18 EV.

Thanks Audionut for clearing that up.
Is there way to set up with magic lateran to bracket 3 shots for dual iso? Would the HDR bracketing mode work with  dual iso? Or can i do it with intervalometer model?
Thanks in advance

Ah ok. So for my bracked hdri images i take 6-7 shots so that about 26f-stops of dynamic range in a hdri image combined.
Would be able to take two dual iso shots to get effectively 28f-stops? (14f-stops per image) all i need really is 26f-stops.

Thanks dmilligan, s
Instead of it converting it down to 16bits is it possible for it not to do that? And keep the image as 20bits? Keeping the most amount of data?

General Help Q&A / Dual ISO HDRI 20bit export VFX help
November 14, 2014, 04:00:13 PM
Hi i have a afew questions, and the more techy people can help with me :)
i have been playing with dual iso i think is excellent. I take hdri images for VFX so the output is 32bit image, with a range of ( a mid day image taken) seeing the sun as a disk to seeing the in dark shadows (this is not a toned map image its a full float 32bit exr or .hdr image)

So my question is
- Is the dual iso image a 20bit raw?  i cant seem to export the processed image out from lightroom or adobe raw at 20bit as max is 16bit. Is there away to process the dual iso raw as a 32bit tif or even better exr 32bit full float to retain the full 20bits?

-In theory would i just need to take two dual iso shots raws to cover the dynamic range i need to get 32bit? i take 7- 6 raws bracketed? so is there a setup i can have with Magic lantern to bracket the camera to take  two dual iso shots?with different iso's and shutters speeds. As i take a 360 i take fours shots @ 90 degrees to get the full 360.

Thank you in advance

Hello,
just wondering is it possible to make a config file and have tragic-lantern boot up with this config file by default for 6D?

or can you do this?
if you hold e.g set button when camera is booting up  will load config file 1.
if you hold  trash button while camera is booting up will load config file 2

i know that 5D mark3 can do this can 6D TL do this?
#10
oh sorry i didnt know that ML forum didnt support TL,
is there a forum for TL i cant seem to find it?

Feature Requests / Re: Advanced Bracket Features Request

Must say great work Alex,
Just want to make clear that VFX artists look for in hdri images.
We are not looking for tonedmapped flat images which are a hdr effect/ toned mapped.
We use full float 32bit files for lighting either .hdr format or .exr (exr is open-source has really good compression)

more info on exr
http://www.openexr.com/

I found this article for people who aren't VFX artist to explain what we need hdri's for and the dynamic range in them.
http://www.cgarchitect.com/2013/12/effects-of-hdr-vs-mdr-on-image-based-lighting

8 stops with 1EV apart is the minimum, in some cases,(more than likely ) you need more stops or .5Ev apart, to get the resolution in range.

Pls can we increase  the number to 40 frames in ML? maybe a sub menu to unlock that option with in a menu? with warning .
I can say it is a needed feature for VFX guys.

and considering these are 14bit raw files with a lot of potential for shadow and highlight recovery there should be no quality loss at all.
Marsu42 not totally true.....explained below

Guys i can say for 3D VFX this makes a difference, as when you stop down an image there is clipping(or step up noise in the blacks) then taking an image at the proper exposure.

Again im taking about dynamic resolution. So gaining up an image or stopping down an hdri image you be able to see the dymaic resolution captured in the hdri,
The Ideal for a VFX  hdri is to capture  26 f-stops of dynamic range like the Spheron HDR Camera does.

The only choice us VFX have to capture a decent hdri on a dslr is Promote Control which is £300!! which is way over priced for what it does! no way worth £300
http://www.promotesystems.com/products/Promote-Control.html
This allows for 40, (40 will hardly be used but nice to have the option available there, when you're on site just in case) and
0.3EV - 0.7 EV's increments.

I do not want money for my work on ML. A new SD card would be really helpful for me, maybe I can get one for Christmas ;)

I think the main repository we can add a function Shutter speed sequence calculator.

This we need to create another repository :
-15 frames upped to 40,
- Add 0.3 and 0.7 EV,

Hey Greg its coolio  :) you can buy an SD card with it, i have no idea, how to program and compile this together, if you or someone can get these features as requested into a compiled 6D build the im more that happy to pay for it... for the time and effort.

Hey Guys hdri's are used for Global Illumination/reflections, these extra stops make a difference, depending on how much of dynamic range your trying to capture. You cant just say that 7 exposures will cover all situations. It depends on the environment what range your trying to capture.

I understand for the average user that 7 exposures will cover all the bases for just image use.
But for the niche VFX artist user, Can make use of these extra exposures. As we are looking to capture dynamic resolution more stops the more resolution. Yes raws you can push and pull them a stop or two. But this is emulated. Yes you can recreate it but your dynamic range will be noisey and less in dynamic range resolution.

I know for the masses using hdris that over 7 exposures is excessive. But for us vfx guys is much needed for accurately capturing the most dynamic range resolution for rendering in cgi.

Spheron HDR Camera
This is used by studios has 26-f stop range in the hdri image. Used for CGI re-lighting

Greg, i can send you the money by paypal? i'll pm you my email? can you pls work on these features for 6D?
- Add 0.3 and 0.7 EV increment options,
- Shutter speed sequence calculator

If there are more people who need this function, I do it.
Done - https://bitbucket.org/hudson/magic-lantern/pull-request/293/feature_hdr_bracketing-15-frames-upped-to/diff
Yes, it is possible.
It need a few corrections.
I do not have 6D, I do not know how to do it.
Fast bracketing only work on 500D.

Thank you greg, is this build on the 6D, 1% Nov build?
http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=3904.2775

do you reckon you can get the 0.3 and 0.7 EV increment options? in a build?

Also - Shutter speed sequence calculator

happy to pay you if you can get these two in pls

thanks again

Yes pls! for 6D, this will be very helpful! will happily donate £15 / thats $24 for US people to the developer for this function on the 6D
compiled as i can't program :(

-15 frames upped to 40
yes i need more for creating hdri's for VFX CGI work

- Add 0.3 and 0.7 EV increment options, (more lower EV possible?)

- Shutter speed sequence calculator

- Faster between shots i.e mirror lock up limit mirror vibration, faster shots, continuous shooting?

That makes more sense now...how are you processing your .RAWs? And where are you applying LUTs (in what program)? Can you post screengrabs of your results when you apply the LOG FILM looks?

im using resolve to grade, using a film lut to grade. but the problem is the film lut is in log space. is there a correct lut i can use to get my raw footage into correct log space in resolve?
thanks in advance

Mirror lockup will slow down the shots but it will cut the vibrations like you said, there is a handheld mirror lockup that works between 1/x and 1/1XX, its in the shoot menu.

Sorry im abit of a noob to ML what does that mean 1/x and 1/1xx?

cheers 1% really appreciate your work  :D,
will  try it when i get home from work.
Just one feature i think that will help me is that, when shooting bracketed shots it is limited to 15 can that be higher? like 21? also i think more importantly is there away to shoot bracketed shots with mirror lock up?

-this will help get an clearer image( because no vibration from mirror)

- will speed up capture process? no waiting time for mirror to come up. **not sure about this

im a VFX artist so the more shots i get to create an hdri image the better/ accurate the light source will be in CG.
thanks

yes 6D has ML Bracketing. but what im asking is can you do mirror lockup in ML, for bracketing hdri's?
because the mirror movement can cause images to be miss aligned very slightly with the vibration. And possibly be fast capturing?

Yea, you can but throughput might be meh. I can pull off 1280x720 in 1x at 24p with the raw color preview full screen (ml preview) or crop marked (hacked).
