Hey guys,

At the moment i'm owning a fairly new 6D. Really love the full frame capabilities and the ability to run magic lantern.
But since I've owned this camera and have run ML I discovered the real potential of RAW video. And i really like it.

The problem is i can't really decide if i would upgrade to an 5D MKIII (wich has full support for 1080p RAW) or stay with the 6D (which doesn't work really well with RAW.. Slow SD card and it's buggy)

I'm able to upgrade for 550 euro (750 US Dollar).
Would you guys consider the upgrade? Or should i stick with the 6D for ~2 or 3 years and buy a new body after some time has passed?

Appreciate every help and information :)

Thanks and regards, Bas

You can keep the 6D and get a 50D or a 7D for that price.. you can also go all out and get the 5DIII. The nicest I get stable with the 6D is the 1280x720 with a really wide lens like 11-16.

i'd switch right away... 5dm3 and the spanned mlv, sound, slo-mo, etc... if u dont use ML, 5dm3 wouldnt make such a huge difference...

7D and 6D have sound too. 50D doesn't.

The spanning is more of a gimmick... but 5DIII has exfat + CF and those are worth it

How exactly is spanning a gimmick :) ? I don't get it... it saves me all the time

I'm not really getting the idea of having 2 bodies? 7D has a smaller sensor and not as good low light performance as the 6D. I prefer one perfect setup than having 2 setups.
I don't know how up to date this chart is: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AgQ2MOkAZTFHdFFIcFp1d0R5TzVPTVJXOEVyUndteGc#gid=5 but i would only consider upgrading to the 5D3. But that would cost me 550 euro (selling the 6D and buying 5D3 secondhand)... Though decicion.

How much value does RAW really bring? Do you guys with a 5D3 always shoot RAW video? Or sometimes consider just shooting H264?

For photo low-light, 6D is at least 0.5 stops cleaner than 5D3, not to mention the lack of vertical banding at low ISO.

Video... not sure. If anyone wants to do a comparison, grab raw_diag and post some graphs from movie mode at different ISOs (OB, dark frame and SNR should be enough for a quick check).

I have my own small video production company (with myself as the only employee). So the camera will be used for video for about 90% of the time.

The main question is.. Is the RAW functionality  worth the 550 euro (750 us dollar) upgrade? How important is this function for your daily usage?

Advanced almost 1DX autofocus, dual cards ( 1 CF), better feel and handling (IMO), better all around camera, and ML just rocks on 5D III. I wouldn't give mine up or buy anything else if I had to do it over.

Rent one and try it out if you're stuck on deciding. It's more than just RAW video advantages.

2 cards needed at the same time and part of your video ends up on one and part on another. Matching this with multiple cards and many files sounds like fun.

I second the rent and try approach.

Hi there, I was in the same situation last summer, I got the 6D for few months and played with RAW, it was cool but I wanted more!
What made me upgrade :
- 1080p raw video (or more with x5)
- no moire like on the 6D
- 61 focus points
- 5DIII is one of the main body of ML development when it comes to new stuff!

Here is a video I made last summer before getting the 5D, stuff in the conclusion might not be true now, like the audio stuff.
