Hi all. There are a ton of threads spread out all over the place on this issue, so I don't know where to post this question.

Question:

I am running ML v2.3 Oct 26th build, which seems very, very good! I want to buy an external monitor for 5d mark iii to be able to see the video on that via HDMI whilst recording raw. Does anyone know if this will work, and what the best proven monitor that isn't too expensive is? Thank you sooo much.

You are welcome to try.
I can't get dual view - camera and monitor with ML RAW.
You CAN view in an external monitor by HDMI the same screen as the viewfinder.

So maybe what you meant is: External monitor would work IF you are using Canon's HDMI out to record to say a Ninja or similar, but will NOT work with ML raw at all? (Just trying to clarify, thank you for answering!)

when you connect HDMI to an external Monitor, you loose the viewfinder of the camera.
So, you have to choose.

The deal will be get both working. One for the director or client and the other for the cameraman. Well, this is not possible yet.

Or use Android app DSLR Camera which keeps both screens on at the same time.
T3i and Kiss X4 (550d (T2i)) Tamron 18-200mm, Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 (need firmware upgrade) Olympus 50mm f1.8  Olympus 28mm f2.8 and Olympus 24mm f2.8
Fancier 370 tripod and LCD hinged loupe. DIY Slider and crane.

there are monitors with HDMI out / SDI out. Works like a dream. I use 5.6 inch TV logic VFM-056 WP  monitor and use an extra 17 inch monitor for clients/ director.

The tvlogic monitor is good, but quite expensive (about 1100 euro's, but it's american so it will probably be 1000 dollars)
The good thing is that it can get HDMI in and cross SDI out, that i use the most since all professional 17 inch monitors to my knowledge use SDI in. (i use an BT-LH1760 from panasonic for those occasions. Works great. Keeps the director/client on some distance of the cameraman/dop.)

For a second setup I have an Marshall V-LCD50-HDMI. Very nice. Not so expensive (500 euro's) and all the bells and whistles. Only HDMI in, so only a single monitor.

ill agree with you, i had a gig this past Sunday and we used a small hd monitor directly from the 5d mk3 then from there we connect to a hdmi splitter to a bank of field monitor for our dp and director. it was my first time using a set up like that and aside from the tons of hdmi cables i was a great set up.

I insist, as I did with Raw before appear, its possible use HDMI to connect a regular monitor, with out lost the LCD form the camera. The problem its the firmware.
