50D Super Resolution Dual ISO
« on: November 14, 2013, 05:37:13 AM »
Although my main focus is video I'm starting to love my 50D for photography.

I've been experimenting with photo matrixing, taking multiple shots of interesting architecture around Riga, Latvia.

Here's one of my first efforts (click link below for scaled to HD image):

This shot is made up of 15 x 15mp images (3rows/5 columns). Original composite is around 19000px wide. Shot on an old, manual Auto Revuenon 50mm F1.4 but using ML Auto ETTR. Processed with ACR and Microsoft ICE (for stitching the images)

I hadn't heard of ICE until I went looking and it's fantastic. Beats Canon's photo stitch and Photoshop photomerge. Well worth the FREE download if you're on PC http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/redmond/groups/ivm/ICE/

View a scaled to HD size here: http://i.cubeupload.com/BIuArx.jpg

UPDATE: Here is a small gallery with a few more. Shot with ML Dual ISO (up to 70x shots per composite/up to 58k pixels wide) Images scaled to about 3-5% of their original size for web viewing ;)

What a wonderful image. Love the tone and old feel to it. Very nice. I'm intrigued to look into this technique!!
May I ask what aperture this was taken at?

I was using a manual lens but I think it was around F8.

Post a few more shots (used Dual ISO for them) in the first post ;)

very nice indeed! i like how you have kept the people in the images rather than editing them out... but its spooky to see that one vanishes ;)

Ha :)

Thanks. Yes, that can be a problem with this method. Some shots took me a few mins to complete and people/cars move. I've spent the last few hours photoshopping out disembodied legs and ghost cars. The stitching app is great but not perfect.

Really nice images. I think the subtle HDR look strengthen the autumn mood of the pictures.
The pictures inspired me to use DualISO instead of HDR for my next panorama shooting. Thx

For the Panorama stitching i might recommend Hugin: http://hugin.sourceforge.net/
It's a software the gives the user much control over the stitching process, f. e. it's possible to mask out objects.
It takes a while to get into the possibilites of the programm, but it's really worth it.  :)

Doing panorama photography i really learned a lot from this tutorial esp. with moving objects:

More great captures. Does the dual iso function work with the 550D? It seems like a fantastic feature. I thought the 7D and MKIII were the only two cameras to work with it??

Thanks :)

If it works on the 50D I guess it can work on the 550D. It's a module so you could try loading it and see what happens.

You should! :)

I've only ever been into the video side of things but since ML raw video capability came along I find myself shooting less quantity and more quality. This means I'm out shooting far less video unless I have a specific piece in mind (bored to death with tests TBH). I still wanted to use the camera so I tried Dual ISO and I was instantly hooked. I'm gonna spend a lot more time learning photography I think and it can only help improve my raw video work.

Do post the results if you go on a shoot :)

Indeed  :D  ML have been a school for me, a place... can i say a home?? With raw video i just learn to shoot what i want/need, been more careful about what i shoot. Learning photography will make u a lot better in video for sure.

Im right now in a place (and without money) that i don't like so much, that not inspired to me to photograph or shoot video but in short time i will move and will take some dual-iso pictures... and of course this will be the first place that i will share it =))

May I ask what are you dual ISO settings?  I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong but my images have a blueish washed out tint and when viewed at 100% the images show horizontal scan lines. I can correct the blueish tint by adjusting the white balance but the photos just doesn't seem right. My set up is 5Dmk3, ML nightly,

It sounds like you're looking at unprocessed CR2 files. They need to be processed into DNG format with the cr2hdr command line utility. I used a1ex's cr2hdr-amaze-edge2.exe for the shots in this thread. There is a download link for the .exe in the Dual ISO thread but you'll need to search the forum for it.
