Follow Focus HELP!

Guys I'm having an issue with follow focus. I set the follow focus in the menu no problem and can use my up/down left/right buttons to operate the follow focus perfectly in live mode. Once I switch the recording button on and begin my video these buttons no longer focus my shot at all.. the focus doesn't move. Is there something I'm doing wrong here?
