SuperNoob Install Question--Canon 50D

Is there any way to write the ML firmware file to a Canon 50D without a card reader?  I've tried copy/paste to the root of the CF card, but get an error message stating that the device doesn't allow files to be placed in that area. I've re-formatted the CF card, but still no luck.

Any thoughts on getting around this issue?
