Im going to be buying a Lilliput 7-inch LCD monitor with HDMI found here:

http://www.amazon.com/Lilliput-monitor-interface-dedicated-high-definition/dp/B0041I8UAO/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1378288510&sr=1-1&keywords=lilliput+monitor

to connect to my 5d mark 3. My hope is that I will be able to shoot raw with the monitor attached with no issues. Please forgive my extreme lack of knowledge on this subject

My first question is,
Has anyone tried this and did it work? if not what were the issues?

Second, when you press record button does the monitor turn off then on and then records?

Third, Is the monitor going to be cropped or is the full screen going to be utilized?

And lastly is there anything I should be aware of when using an external monitor with the 5d mark 3? This will be my first external monitor and I know you guys are the experts :)

I understand that cannon released a firmware update for HDMI output but unfortunately magic lantern will not work with the new update installed. Thankyou so much for you time and sorry for all the noob questions, long live Magic Lantern!

You might consider the newer model which has higher resolution and an all metal body:

It's a bit more expensive, but that's what I'm planning to get.

There are a number of discussions in the Hardware forum which you might want to take a look at, but from what I can understand, the consensus seems to be that on the 5D3, external monitoring should work.

I don't know about 5DIII, but on my 5DII raw recording fails almost every time a monitor is plugged in. It actually does record, but crashes and requires a reboot when dumping the buffer.

My understanding is that the 5D3 is a lot more stable with external monitoring than the 5D2.

Having said that, people do report some issues, particularly relating to crop marks.

At some point ML could be ported over to 1.2.1 which might possibly enable HDMI mirroring, but that is speculative at best and I certainly wouldn't plan on it to happen any time soon.

I just found out the hard way that I can't use my brand new Ikan 7" monitor with ML on my Mk3. I get the bizarre crop marks and the camera won't record.

Strangely it does apparently record, but usually locks up, and even when it doesn't it never actually writes a file.

Major bummer as this prohibits any serious work I was planning to do. Back to borrowing Reds :(

Anyone else having any luck?
