I´ve uploaded an h264 vs raw comparison video, the difference is huge.
In my opinion it´s a really useful function in many situations, even though the workflow is more complicated.

Wow, JKB that looks incredible!

I'm confused by when you say the H.264 has been expanded 120%. Can you explain that?

I'm a newbie obviously about how Canon's firmware H264 compression works.

Does the Canon firmware actually shoot at 1920x1080, or like ML does it shoot at lower dimensions and then expand to 1080? In that case, is neither the Canon firmware nor Magic Lantern "true 1080p" ?

Also here's what I'm trying to figure out:

Papkee in a private message says I can shoot RAW video continuously on my Sandisk 45 MB/s card and can get a maximum dimension of 1472x672.

I'm not a math or numbers person or good with aspect ratios, haha, so I apologize in advance if this sounds stupid. So here's what I'm trying to discover.

Say I don't want to expand my 1472x672 footage fully to 1080p, but want to only expand it enough so that it stretches across the screen (with black aspect ratio bars on top and bottom). Would this result in a sharper image than expanding it fully to 1080p, or because of proportions would this simply make my image look stretched/weird?

Thanks!

Recording in 1080p with canon firmware gives you a bigger frame than recording at 1600x600 in raw. So i had to scale up the h264 version by 20% to make it fit to the raw version for a better comparison.
The Raw Version was also scaled up by 20% to 1920x720.
So normally you would get a slightly better quality with the h264 than its shown in the video since its scaled up a bit.

benlen

Thanks for the info!

Maybe I missed this, but has anyone done a Youtube/Vimeo vid of Canon 1080p vs ML video scaled up to 1080p? I'd love to see if there's a big difference at those dimensions.

If so, I'm sold!

Figured I'd share some work that I've made recently with Canon's firmware at 1080p.

Right now I'm doing all I can to trick out my T4i/650D. Using a prime lens (Canon 50mm f1.8 ) for optimum sharpness and an ND filter to knock down sunlight in shallow depth of field shots.

I really curious if people think I can get a better quality image with ML, scaling the ML Raw footage to 1080p, than the footage I took with the Canon firmware at 1080p below:

Very nicely done video. There are some workflow hurdles with RAW and how you choose to overcome them can change the final video.  There is a lot of potential with the RAW recording especially for sharpness and dynamic range.  The scaling is an issue but the other option is the compression artifacts in the h.264 video.  The question is if you can use it to help out your video.  The RAW comparisons in this and other RAW video threads are rather convincing to me that the benefits outweigh the scaling.

The Dropbox for the updates (650d, 1.0.4)seems to be offline  :-\!
And if I record raw video at any resolution i am getting red and a few blue points in a mysterious accurate shape...
Is that a known issue?

Don't you think we should somehow make sticky a post or in a some way inform the rest of the people who just came here about the pink dots?

The link in the first Post to Satrianis DropBox Folder must be changed

There are lots of sticky posts out there. I think it would be a little bit easier if Nanomad puts a link to the RAW postprocessing thread in the first post and pink/red dot removal will be linked there.
Second usefull link will be another to Pelican's 3 RAW video enabler files. We've seen several people just downloading a single file (the RAW video module) and running into the same error.

Just suggestions.

Thank you dngrhm! I appreciate the feedback!

Yeah, compression artifacts/noise can be a real headache with H.264, especially if you want to do any kind of extreme color grading.

If you have a shot that isn't exposed EXACTLY correctly with H.264, you're hugely limited in what types of correction/grading you can do.

Magic Lantern is one of the best things I've ever come across!

Thank you so much for the incredible work!

Question: Is there or will there be a shortcut to ISO on the 650D? Maybe I'm just missing it.

Thanks a lot

RafaLibrenz

I think I found a BUG: in "Image review settings", the function "SET+MainDial" does not work. When I try, the camera jumps 10 images. It used to work in older version (1.0.1).

Another thing: 600D and 700D get (today) the feature "Dual ISO". I hope it come soon for 650D. :)

Yes, is there! 650D has a button called 'ISO':

Does anyone can confirm me that PicoC scripts doesn't work on ML 650d for 1.0.4 ? (Doesn't work for me)

I can confirm. Scripts don't work here.

I recently lost my memory card so I got an identical model and extracted http://nanomad.magiclantern.fm/650D/magiclantern-v2.3.NEXT.2013Aug03.650D104.zip to the root of the card. I than replaced the ML directory and autoexec.bin with the latest from satriani so I now have those files plus the install and help pdf's plus the fir file but ML is acting weird now, zebras work sometimes but not always and when i try to view the built in help files it says they aren't there. What should I do?

Thanks for your answer. I know that button but it's only for Canon ISO. I meant a shortcut to ML ISO's, like the 600D has, where you can change ISO with the arrow keys and you get the 'better' increments.

delorossa

how long it will take to a stable version of ML for 650D?

Suggestion: bundle autoexpo module with the next builds. It works better than P mode and brings 5D/1D-like features to the 650D (auto iso range, shutter range, aperture range, custom exposure curve)

I think I've fixed the pink dot issue, would be nice if someone could test this on a 650D (I don't have one, but the 700D is pretty much the same)

Ops! Confess, you stole that interface from NCC-1701!
I'm tempted to look for a tutorial ...

Kidding, this is a good day indeed!

I dont know if the fix is included in the build satriani just compiled an hour ago or so but in this build i still get pink dots

Doesn't look like. Change log does not include this commit.
