60d set button and multiway control non-functional

Everything was working great with ML on my 60d until I started messing with a nikon sg-3IR on the flash hot shoe.  Now the set button is non-functional and pressing the multiway controller when in the Canon menu causes a continuous scrolling of the menu.  Tried the standard restore process without success.  Problems still exist after formatting card on the PC.  Please advise as how to proceed.

A couple more things to add.  Canon Firmware 1.1.1, ML 2.3.  No sensor cleaning message on start-up and shutdown.

Left the battery out for a couple of days and now camera is back to normal.
