On full resolution 16:9 1728x972 (no FPS override & in Canon Menu 1920x1080 24p), i'm getting a fluctuation of frames - either 118 or 129.
I noticed this yesterday & have just confirmed it with today's the latest build - it is now alternating between the 2.
What is also interesting is that the speed reading whilst recording is only slightly different - for 129 frames it goes between 20.8-21MB/s & for 118 it can be anything between 20.2-20.6MB/s.

Some how the camera is managing to squeeze more speed out, but why is anyone's guess.

Just thought it might be useful info?

OK so Raw Video on the 60D (and all Canon cameras for that matter) is an amazing achievement, there's no doubt about it.

However, am I the only one that thinks its pretty pointless when the 60D only writes 20mb/s?  Yes, I can see that recording 720p upscaled is sharper, and more dynamic than 1080p h.264, but the only continuous recording possible seems to be 960x540, which is pretty much standard def, so not much use either.

Is this likely to improve with future developments, or are we stuck with what we have due to the 20mb/s max write speed?  If this isn't an option, is there any chance that outputting to a lower bit rate would make it possible to shoot continuous 1080p recordings in raw?

I agree with you.
There's no point recording at 960x.... (I didn't even try !... ok maybe once) excepted for fun !
I only test with the maximum resolution 1728x736 24P, and the use of 2,35:1 format is to get the max possible number of frames : 164.
Or at x5 and x10 at 1920x1080 in 16/9 format, but for fewer frames (118).

This is all amazing and very exciting, but I believe, at this stage of developement on 60D, it's only for testing purpose and getting familiar with RAW editing workflow (while waiting maybe for BMPCC and more).

Unless we can some day get around that SD controller limitation.

Besides, as always, the aliasing and moiré are horrible !

Back then, when we thought raw video was not even possible on 1000x cards at 24 fps, Luke Neumann asked me that even if I could record 3 seconds of video, he could definitely use that.

The 60D records 118 frames at 1734x976 24p according to my simulation. That's 5 seconds of video.

If we squeeze another 128MB of memory, that will be 184 frames (7.5 seconds). Not bad for short films IMO.

With end trigger and 400MB buffer, it will shoot 140 frames (~6 seconds). With current buffer configuration (280MB), you can do 96 frames (4 seconds) with end trigger.

Note: end trigger is not yet implemented, this is just theory.

Is this how much unused memory you've found?
Yep, definitely useable.
Has anyone figured if 10bit instead of 14bit is possible & would this mean longer recording times?
Or just cleaner H264...

& BM Pocket probably won't even come with Raw on shipment! (if it ships at all)

Yes, I smell that much is unused, but I don't know how to allocate it yet.

Forget 10 and 12 bits.

I'm not sure if you noticed my earlier post, but i'm getting 129 & 118 alternating frame amounts on 16:9 1728x972 (& only on this setting).
So something has changed recently & appears to be allowing the write speed to nearly get to its limit - it seems to start at 20.9mb/s, jump to 21mb/s & then jump down again to 20.8mb/s.
So far i've noticed that the write speed on the lower settings doesn't go much above 20.2mb/s.

Thanks for all your hard work!

This was shot with magic lantern Raw on the 60D
I chose the highest resolution at 2.35 crop
I got 7 seconds per recording (179 frames)

The post proces went through:
1.Raw2DNG
2.PS to TIFF
3.QT7 image sequence to Prores

Intensely amazing difference from h.264 codec.

I agree with a1ex actually... I'm doing a TV advert these days - paid job again. For the last week I've been shooting RAW almost everyday while not working on the main stuff.

4.4 secs on the 1734x976 24.000 overridden... I made a small laminated chart to carry in my pocket with the time capabilities of each resolution from 1734x... => 1600x... => 1472x... => 1344x... and 1280x...
So from the 1734x976 - 4.4 secs to the 1280x720 - 14seconds I am pretty happy. Only thing I need to do is rethink well every shot, place it, coordinate start/end and just overall pre-plan of everything.

Actually I think this limitation works towards my skills as a cinematographer :D haha There's also this kind of feeling one of my video course teachers was talking about - trying to save film in the old days with the huge ass cameras and expensive film reels. It probably feels the same to some extent when shooting with 3 x 32gb cards and a 70gb free space on a laptop around me + THESE TIME LIMITS THAT I SEE AS AN AWESOME THING NOW.  LOL

THANKS AGAIN ML!!!

+1 @Burni_

A few weeks ago I told A1ex that I'll wait for the official version of ML raw... Found out I just couldn't resist:) I have been experimenting a bit the past week like others are doing, and despite the workflow and the limitation of the 60D sd, it's worth my time learning to use raw. Huge thanks to A1ex and the ML team.

Just revert to the last one that worked for you - i think they are trying different things with modules (for instance, Auto ETTR is now a module) & have done something to the Makefile. Its been reported.
They are also trying things to get us more memory - 128MB more.

The last build that worked for me was: ML-RAW-60D-hourly_2013-06-14_07-40

Question for everyone: Is there a particular nightly build you would recommend that allows for a more frames than the most current one (maybe an older versions gets higher frame rates at the higher resolutions but has has some features removed or is more optimized)? In other words if I want to get maximum length without dipping down to 720p or less should I use the newest one or is there a milestone build that I should stick with?  I want to shoot some footage of my baby this weekend and I'm just wondering if people have seen any gains from the 5/27 build I still have.

Thanks!

Actually I think this limitation works towards my skills as a cinematographer

agree, the CPN is showing this commercial shot with the C300, 1DX, 5D III, however, I can't see a single shot which is more than a few seconds, probably it is being cut from a long clip, but with careful planning of every shot, 60D can almost do the same in RAW.
http://cpn.canon-europe.com/content/education/technical/shooting_a_maserati_commercial_with_the_c300.do

I just want to say, continuous recording of video is not a must in every usage.

Here's a test I did last week shooting only at 1792 x 736 (2.35:1) using update #8. I got 178 frames throughout, with liveview on and based my exposure (overexposed mostly) on the histogram.

Is 960x540 worse than H.264 720p? I'm curious because that resolution seems to allow the longest recording. For what I do, I simply can't shoot in burst of 6 to 10sec... It's way too short.

thanks

Same here, and it also seems that Auto ETTR was dropped or something. I don't see it any more.
