Did you notice any speed improvements with the "force left" option?

It is faster 339+379+364+265+372 = 343 frames  It is the fastest.

Of course the video is not framed right unless GD in On.  It records just the left most side.

Good, I have something for you. Here:

if (!RAW_IS_IDLE) msleep(250); /* be gentle with the CPU, save it for recording */

replace the 250 with 1000 or 2000. It should be possible to get the maximum speed and still have some sort of preview.

RenatoPhoto

With msleep(1000) there is a boost. (new build 436a9d9)

@  msleep(250 )  Frame Force Left, Global Draw ON, 5X - with 4 test  100+117+84+132 = 108 frames
@  msleep(1000) Frame Force Left, Global Draw ON, 5X - with 4 test  180+133+142+132 = 146  frames
@  msleep(2000) Frame Force Left, Global Draw ON, 5X - with 4 test  99+109+117+84 = 102  frames ??

@  msleep(250 ) Frame Force Left, Global Draw ON, 5X HACKED- with 4 test  232+307+298+198 = 258 frames
@  msleep(1000) Frame Force Left, Global Draw ON, 5X - HACKED with 4 test  198+297+274+330 = 274  frames
@  msleep(2000) Frame Force Left, Global Draw ON, 5X - HACKED with 4 test  250+298+340+331 = 304  frames

Found something cool.

While in the new Force Left mode, it is possible to shut off LiveView and properly frame the subject in the center of the video by clicking the joystick five times to the right and three clicks up.

This is good because by using this method you get full color LiveView while recording.  I tested the following video sizes for which it worked, remember this is in 5X mode:

2048x1152
1920x1088
1856x10856
1728x992
1600x928

Below the 1600 size the video center start moving.

Remember that with this mode you are getting the video crop almost at the center of the lens!

Here is a comparison table including toadays build for writting speed:

5D3 with Lexar 1000x
1920x1088 at 29.97 fps at 5X with Frame to Left option:

                         june 1st          June 2nd          June 3rd
GD ON               118                 108                  110
GD OFF              -----                ----                  129
GD on hacked    230                258                   292
GD OFF Hacked  343                 ---                    350

it seems that there has been a slight increase on the new build june 3rd 6e6ba5352

After I review the frames I will update for pink finds if any...

In the builds of June 1st and 2nd I did find occasionally a pink frame sometimes at the beginning some times in the middle.

But on today's build, not one single pink or corrupt frame!!!!!!!!!!   ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Can you post today's build somewhere?  :)

No offense, but this is already really out of date.  Using the Crop left marks works better now, there is no 17 to the left and 8 up - it's changed a few build ago to 17 to the left and 3 up (unless you're using the better crop left).  Also, you should see the FPS override is now 23.976.

The thing that irks me with this method is it assumes you have a subject dead center before you begin recording - what if I'm shooting a moving target and can't center it up before I go 1:1?

a1ex

If the subject is off-center, use the dolly mode and pan until you frame it correctly. Use grayscale preview for correct framing.

My thoughts about this, when using the Canon preview option...

You can combine the new "Focus box: snap points: center to x5" with "Force Left" framing, and this will get you quickly to the center of  your recording area when in crop mode by just clicking the joystick.  But you will need to watch out for lens distortion if you are using a wide angle lenses such as the Tokina 11-16 or any focal length which exhibits moderate distortion near the edges. The method I just described is great for run and gun situations where you want to quickly punch into crop mode, click the joystick to center the recording area, and record.  But the focus box is so over to the left side of the frame where distortion lives, that it can ruin your shot.  I conducted a quick test video to illustrate the problems this can cause with your shot.

Ultimately, I've settled on using a different method for crop mode... I use force left framing, with the focus box 5 clicks to the right, 3 up.  It keeps me closer to the center of the lense in a more distortion free zone of the lense.  I just always leave the focus box there and try not  to move it so I'm always ready if I need to quickly enter crop mode.  This location may not work for other cameras so Alex is trying to keep the code related to focus point snap points as portable as possible, thus the current location of the snap point.

Now it's as easy as moving the focus box wherever you want, pressing zoom and recording.

;)

I hoped you'd get there.  Big improvement in usability.   :D

Does this mean that if the focus box is in the center of liveview, a crop occurs from the portion of the frame coming from exact center of the lense?

I am having some type of bad frames when I shoot cropped video above 1428 width at 29.97 fps.  I have gone back to june 3rd builds and still get them above 1600 width.

I dont recall getting this vertical bland so I am wondering if it is just my cam?

Update after 5 hours of testing..

I found out that this can be mostly fixed by using FPS override.  I was able to eliminate this type of frames by tweaking Timer B to get fps=29.71   instead of the preselected 29.976.

Reproduced.

Does the preview type affect the results?

I hope this isn't too stupid a question:

Is there any prospect of cropped mode working with any other camera?

One difference between my 60D and 600D/T3i is that Canon offer a 3x-10x zoom mode on the latter, while filming.

I only use 3x, as that is essentially lossless (close to actual pixels of the sensor).

I had hoped for some time that this functionality might be brought to the 60D, but in truth, the ML hack may be better :)
