Is it possible to have RAW video recording abilities on 550D?

Hi All,

I recently got to know that Canon 5D Mark III can record DNG videos (RAW videos).

Could anyone please let me know if 550D hardware is capable of recording DNG videos. I understand that the resolution might not be anywhere close to 4K (assuming it might however be able to capture at least 2.5 K?) however the quality of images might get better with DNG as it gives us complete control over picture to grade in post production.

+1, I associate to this question, and waiting for answer ! It is a great achievement 24fps 1080p RAW, but on a 5DMKiii ... a camera that only the body costs up as a leg and an eye... everyone is near to buy, instead, a natively raw-enabled video-cam ! The real achievement, the real breakthrough, the real bargain, the real stunning, the real amazing, the real useful, the real thing... is to port all this to a camera like 550D !

550D is so old at the moment... yes the stuff will port but don't expect much. 600D is already ported.

Since the possibility of any budget conscious user thinking about upgrading the camera to 600D or above is not very feasible, would it be possible to have the 550D ported instead?

It would certainly open a new horizon for many short-movie makers around the world.

Also, regarding the resolution, what could we expect as I am not sure if 2.5 K is possible (was hoping that it might however)

Run the card benchmarks and we'll tell you what resolution you can get. Probably 800x600 or so.

I wonder what we can get from 500D, that one is really interesting for studying the history of Canon's LiveView. The only camera with 20fps video, hehe

50D might also be a good option, since it uses CF cards. Anyone ran benchmarks on it?

Having followed the recent developments I'm keen to see what could be possible with the 550D, should a port be forthcoming. How much further would a 95MB/s card push the possibilities? Or is the 550D itself going to be the limiting factor here?

I was going to buy a 95MB/s card to see what 550D could spit out. But on your benchmark of a 45MB/s card it couldn't even reach half that. In fact, I  got near same results on a class 6 card.


On a different note, what is better;
4:2:0 at 1920x1080
or
4:4:4 at 960x540

Thank you for your feedback/thoughts.

I am not familiar with technical aspects of these cameras.

I only thought that if a camera has video capturing ability and also has the ability to capture RAW (CR2) images, then it might as well be possible to port them to capture RAW video!

I am not quite sure about the probability however as I am only an end user. Could anyone let me know if this is possible?

Also, does 720X480 mean that the resolution is no where close to 1920X1080 or does it affect the quality if we digitally manipulate the resolution during video processing workflow. I did not understand this concept.

I use a 16GB 30MB/s Class 10 card. How much resolution can I expect (if it would be possible to capture RAW/DNG video). As we would be capturing DNGs I believe we would not be able to record voice (please correct me if I am wrong). Or is that too possible?

Does the same firmware/upgrade work for Canon EOS 550D too?

How do I perform a benchmark test as discussed by fellow users here? I have never tried that procedure until now

Also, please help me understand whether memory card plays a crucial role or whether it is with the hardware of the camera that determines whether it can capture RAW video

It looks like a waste of time trying to get RAW video on a 550D.
But there are breathtaking "non RAW 550D videos" out there. :-)

My hope is silent pics will be possible one day with a better resolution.

AGREE!!! 100% 14bit RAW Video is what matters even at SD.

Another question could be if the YUV conversion could be surpassed and then saved as compressed RGB in mov(or some other/better codec)? Wouldn't that give a wider color range? I mean on cameras with SD cards only.
