The current nightly build (magiclantern-v2.3.NEXT.2013Jan18.60D.550D.600D.50D.500D.5D2.1100D.zip) seems to have some missing files (for example there is only the .fir for the 1100D).

Just merge/overwrite the files from the 2.3 release with the files from the nightly and you should be good. If you need to patch the autoboot flag, just use the 2.3 release and replace with the newer files then.

It isn't a problem for me - I just needed the autoexec :)

I posted this because I was under the impression that the nightly zip contains all the files required for running ML.

No,  it is meant to upgrade a stable build to nightly. That's why you should install 2.3 first and the overwrite the files

Helo there,
First of all, thank you very much for improving the software in our Canons!!
I've been trying to install LM in my T4i /650D but I can't. I've had read the install guide, an several other guides on the net but I simply can't...

My camera says something like ".fir file needed" and in fact there is no .fir file in the downloaded zip.

What can I do???
I'm using magiclantern-v2.3.NEXT.2014Jan06.650D104
Camera firmware updated to the correct version (1.0.2)
4GB Sandisk SD formated in camera -Low level-
4GB Sandisk SD prepared on macboot in MAC, even EOScard on Win
Inner zip files loaded to the SD card

nothing...

.fir file needed..""

Thanx in advance!!

Download the stable 2.3 release from the downloads page, then extract & replace new files from the nightly build you downloaded in order to get the latest features. Nightly builds don't come as complete releases.

there's no stable for the 650D, install the alpha version from here instead: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=7473.0
then update to the nightly

I suppose you mean the stable version as this one:

Even if I got a 650D right? not an alpha version...
If I understand you well, I guess I should replace only those files that nightly build zip overwrites.

thank you

Sorry about that, forgot there's no stable release for the 650D. Download the alpha version from the link dmilligan posted (2 posts up), then update any new files from latest nightly build to get new features.

that bullet was close!!!  :o

thank you!!  ;)

I was wondering...
If I use several sd cards I need to have ML files in every card after installation?
Or I don't need those ML files on any card anymore?

Shiranai

Hey,
I can't install the latest nightlys on 600D as well. I've tried several things, and it seems the autoexec.bin is broken.

Like told here, I overwrote the files from 2.3 stable with the nightly.
If I use the autoexec.bin from the nightly, the camera just won't start. Red LED is blinking like when reading a SD, but it doesn't stop, even when I remove the SD.
I have to completely remove the battery to make it stop.

But everything works fine if I use the autoexec.bin from 2.3 stable release - but then the ML-menu is the same like in stable, I don't get the new features like dual iso.

Walter Schulz

Put SD-card into cardreader and *delete* your ML folder. Then copy Nightly ML folder and Autoexec.bin over. Try again.

Shiranai

I've tried every possible combination yesterday, also just deleting and using the nightly (which was my first try). Problem started there.

So by try and error I found out the problem lies within the autoexec.bin from the nighlys. It simply doesn't work with 600D.

Shiranai

Okay thanks, problem is fixed with latest nighly.
But it seems there's no dual ISO for 600D  :(

Audionut

You should check that again, I can see it.

Shiranai

Nope sorry.
Either I forgot to add something or its not there.
AFAIK It should be in the exposure menu but I only got:
White balance
ISO
Shutter
Aperture
Picture Style
Expo Lock
Expo Presets
Expo Override

Audionut

You turned it on on the module menu right?

Shiranai

Fanch

I installed the latest nightly build and FONTS.DAT was missing.
So I overwrote the files from the build onto the stable release for 550D.
But it does not work apparently.

Fanch

I just copied the files in both the data and fonts folders.
It is dirty but it worked.

johnerobinson2

I will PAY someone to do a magic lantern install for 1200D/T5.....any takers?

And the amount you wanna spend?
How much you wanna do it for? Of Course I will have to verify that it works on my camera...

Walter Schulz

Just imagine every port taking several hundert hours. Image the price tag and spend your bucks on a camera supporting ML.

johnerobinson2

It would be THAT costly? So, I would do better getting the 1100D insteard of the 1200D?

johnerobinson2

And is there a video to learn how to adaot the code for that camera?

Walter Schulz

Devs compare porting ML to translating a pile of egypt glyphs and a big one.
EDIT: "A" video? You are kidding, right? You may start here:

Y do you contributors have to be so Rude and condescending???? I just ASKED a question.

josepvm

The answer to your question is that porting ML to a new camera is a very difficult and very time consuming task. And can be done only by highly skilled developers, who know a lot of C and ARM assembly programming, and that had spent a lot of time learning specifically how Canon firmware and Magic Lantern code work. There is a lot of information in the forum about all this stuff.

Current developers have said several times that they have no time to port ML to new cameras. There are 13 camera models already supported. And only keeping all this ports up to date is a task too big for current ML team.

You have just asked a question, true ... but there are too many requests flooding the forum from users continuosly demanding ports for more cameras ... and this is not possible by now, as explained. And that constant pressure is very annoying for the devs, and does not help the project at all.

So, if you need ML,  please take it as it is now, and try to get a camera that already supports ML.

Thank you Josepvm. I understand that there are many requests, but did not realize how time consuming it was to be developed. I thank you for your respectful response. I currently have a T5/1200D. I will work to get a T3/1100D because that is one of the cameras right?

josepvm

1100D is an inexpensive option to start using ML, true. It has lower resolution than 1200D, but this also means larger pixels and good performance for night photography.

But current implementation of ML for 1100D has some limitations. Mainly in features related to RAW data reading: ETTR, Dual-ISO, RAW histogram, RAW Zebras. I think they do not work in Liveview mode on the 1100D.

There are other options; you can get a used 500D or 550D, they are also affordable and will provide you that features missing in 1100D. It depends on your specific needs.

There are some tables that show ML features available on different camera models:

https://builds.magiclantern.fm/#/features
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AgQ2MOkAZTFHdFFIcFp1d0R5TzVPTVJXOEVyUndteGc#gid=5
http://nanomad.magiclantern.fm/feats.html
http://nanomad.magiclantern.fm/nightly/features.html

Some of them can be a little outdated. So best thing you can do, before buying a camera, is to read thoroughly the specific thread for that camera in the "Camera specific discussion" section, to know last news about available features and known issues with your desired camera model.

Excuse my poor English. As many people here, I am not a native English speaker.

And please, do not consider Walter a rude person, he is doing a great job here, patiently guiding new users through their first steps installing and starting to use Magic Lantern. Your post asking for a video explaining how to port Magic Lantern to a new camera, might have sounded too surrealistic for him. As explained, that is a very complex task. Your question is somehow like asking for a short video to learn how to compose a simphony, or build a rocket for a mission to Mars ...

Josepvm: Thanks so much....You are the Best!!!! ARE you the Joe in Boston rhat was in AZ?  Question...I only wanna get rid of the Box (face detection?) That is always in the center while recording....If I can get that disabled...I can do the rest....Thoughts?

Try to move lens AF/Manual switch to "Manual", to get rid of the focus box.

Normally the focus box should not be visible on the recording .... unless you were triying to use an external HDMI recorder. Entry-level Canon cameras do not have clean HDMI output.

But using manual focusing should remove the focus box. If that does not work ... try the different AF methods available on Canon menu: normal, face detection and tracking.

On my EOS M changing to manual focus removes the AF box in video recording mode. On my 500D switching to manual focus makes the focus box bigger when recording is stopped, but it disappears when you start shooting. And using face detect AF also removes it completely .... so you will need to test every focus setting.

johnerobinson2

Yes....I was trying to use multiple cameras....I have a switcher so I am not recording directly in camera....I am recording on another b device cerevo livewedge

Thanks for your thoughts.

So does this mean that the latest stable dev-preview has been compiled for Mavericks and doesnt run in older versions? Do I need to compile it myself?

Hello here, I am brand new to ML and I have now struggled for a good part of the day. I just figured out that the latest nightly build don't come with a fir fil.

I am looking for the 134 fir file for 5d mk3. Where on earth can I find it?

Thanks in Advance
