You need the FIR and ML files on the card too.

But:
-  Remove any third party accessories / batteries first
-  Don't use a battery grip
- Clear canon settings and Cfn
- Run fw upgrade from PHOTO M mode (not video, photo)

Then I am hella confused!

Since everybody discribes the installation like this:

1.Format card, download 650D-safer-dump.fir and put on camera
2.intall upgrade
3.put the card back in computer and make EOS Card
4.Put ML files on card
5. Boot camera

And you are telling me that I need ML files from step number 1?

nanomad

I didn't make the FIR, but having can't hurt (and given the gibberish error message I would try)

Spontaneously I feel like I shouldn't be dealing with this since I got a weird error code...

But one thing that have happend is that when I go to update firmware menu thing and press it, it says "you can upgrade firmware when you want" or something like that when I DON'T have a .fir file on my camera. Before I tried installing ML it did not say anything when I tried to upgrade the firmware without a file

maybe "clear settings" (selection above firmware selection)

On 600D when there is no .fir on the card you can't see the upgrade firmware item in the menu.

Does it shows the same without card too? what about the boot flag? MAybe having it on will keep the menu item shown even without fir? I never noticed it if that's true...
I'm using ML2.3 for photography with:
EOS 600DML | EOS 400Dplus | EOS 5D MLbeta5- EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro  - EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM - EF 70-200mm f/4 L USM - 580EXII - OsX, PS, LR, RawTherapee, LightZone -no video experience-

Without card it says the same thing but when I press it says "Card with firmware is needed". So it seems normal :)

maybe you have a bad copy of the .fir file for some reason

download again and try

download https://bitbucket.org/hudson/magic-lantern/src/99bd629f7c5712346369840e64c04fd2d4576520/platform/650D.101/devkit/650D-safe-dumper.fir?at=unified

Step by step now if I will try again:

1. Low format the SD card
2. Put the safe-dumper fir on SD card
3. Put the SD card in camera and then put it in M photo mode.
4. go to fourth wrench menu and update firmware.
5. Pull out the SD card and put in the computer again
6. Use macboot and choose "Canon-scriptable"
7. Put ML folder and AUTOEXEC.BIN on SD card
8. Put it in camera and it should be fine?

Does it matter that I've tried to make EOS card before running the .fir file?

I didn't, the camera is just looking for the .fir file. BUT, I think we may need someone
who is a MAC person to jump in here who has successfully installed this because
I'm on a pc. Did you try with a new copy of the .fir file?

also you should try "clear settings" (selection above firmware selection) as Nanomad suggested

I can try booting in PC in a minute and do the different steps. What exactly does the 650-safe-dumper.fir file do?

Post number 1234 woot wooot!

the .fir file makes it so the camera boots from the SD card

How did the camera behave when you updated with that .fir?

Ah-ha I see , mine didn't :P

Maybe because I did EOScard in Windows and mac and then tried to update firmware?

So you need to extract files from Pre-alpha2 onto the formatted SD Card and put the safe-dumper.fir, then upgrade the firmware? (Worked for me)

EDIT: Magic Lantern up and running, thanks! :D

then make the card bootable by running EOScard

the .fir file makes the camera able to boot from the card and the EOScard program makes the card a boot drive basically

then the autoexec.bin file runs ML

It works but it crashes often :/

Nomad, if crash logs are useful then I can submit to you. Just let me know if I can do anything to help :).
