Discussion for "ML 2025: Midsummer Edition" on the 200D should go here.  GL&HF everybody :)

Of the new 4 cams, this one has had the most time spent on it.  A summary of features:
- shutter count
- 30 min LiveView timer disable (webcam / HDMI out sleep prevention)
- 30 min MOV / MP4 timer extension (longer videos!)
- intervalometer
- custom cropmarks
- 50% SD speed increase (40MB/s -> 60MB/s)
- various debug features
- raw video...  mostly?

Re raw video: this does work.  It's not entirely reliable.  The output format is quirky, fps reported incorrectly.  Masc added early support to mlvapp.  Let us know how it goes!  I think it is useful if you have patience.  In theory 200D has quite good DR.

OMG OMG OMG!!!
It's happening!?!?!?

But I just cannot find the way to downgrade my firmware from 1.1.0 to 1.0.1
Is it possible I'm stuck without ML???

You may need to take the brave path, ie. switch SD card after clicking OK to firmware upgrade. It didn't fry my 200D, maybe I was lucky.

Quote from: names_are_hard on June 21, 2025, 12:57:15 PMAt ISO 100, the 200D has two stops more dynamic range than EOS M.  It has more DR than EOS M at every ISO.  It has more DR than 5D3 at ISO 100 and 200!

This is absolutely awesome!
I was not aware of the DR advantage either!

Are we, for now, supposed to build https://github.com/reticulatedpines/magiclantern_simplified at home?

Also: where's the donate button?

Alextazee

Let me see if I got the process right...
I put the same firmware I already have (1.1.0) on the card, then start the "upgrade", the when/if it stars, I open the door, and swap the card for the one with the 1.0.1 fw. And hope it will proceed...

I'd love to try it myself, but since the 200D has the battery and SD card under the same door, I'm wondering — how exactly did you manage the card swap without cutting power?
Did you tape the switch, or use some other workaround? Or should I let it turn off actually?

Walter Schulz

Opening battery door doesn't cut power. Only removing battery does.

OK, maybe it doesn't cut the power, but the camera does turn off. 🤔

Walter Schulz

What about switching to discord? You may learn a few things. For example why and when a cam doesn't turn off after opening battery door.

Alextazee

Downgraded successfully! 😉👍

ML loaded. Let's play 😁

Quick and dirty copied from discord (Will clean-up soon):
=======
BTW: 200D is the only cam (for now) breaking Canon's 30-minute recording limit for H.264/MOV.
Because exploring this feature is quite time consuming (who would have guessed?) and there is a mean trap occuring after some 50 minutes which is not easy to corner:

Feature is working for non-ExFAT cards!

We have a strong indication Canon is not able to cope with MOV files exceeding 16 GB.
If 30-minute timer for recording is disabled a file may exceed 16 GB after some 50 minutes (give or take). Making file unreadable! (Two things may happen: 0 Byte displayed for file size ->  Corrupted.
Size > 16 GB but it doesn't show anything in any video player or editor!

But if you are using non-ExFAT cam will detect the file system and generate file chunks up to 4 GB each. With our hack: Forever. If your power supply holds up ofc.
-> You get an - almost - unlimited number of MOV files working fine!
=======

HTH to prevent ruining your day! ;-)

Firmware downgrade woes? Don't worry:

We have a firmware downgrade video now. Thanks to Discord member cleanshirtuk!
If you watch the video on YT page you will see a short written downgrade procedure in video description!

Also: where's the donate button?

You shouldn't need to build it (the official builds come from code on that repo for the 200D), but you can if you want, and it should be pretty easy.  What were you thinking of building it for?

Donation routes is something we will revisit in the future.  Doing money stuff is complicated.

Alextazee

So... how realistic is it to have something like Crop Mood soon on 200D?

Walter Schulz

Define "soon". And we are not able to answer this anyway. But this year: Nope.

Well let's say that this year would be "soon". 🙂

At first check I somehow missed the 2025 release on https://builds.magiclantern.fm/index.html (while looking at https://builds.magiclantern.fm without clicking "Builds" in the top menu)

No waaay man thanks a lot. As for RAW Video, I've tested it on my friend 700D, is the same feature? I mean, suffer from the same issues like red dots and frame drops, or due to the stronger CPU there's less artifacts?

Thanks a lot for your work

Walter Schulz

RAW in 200D is far from matured! In fact it is quite quirky!

If you suffer issues with 700D:
- Red dots are caused by focus pixels where some photosites from green channel are used. They should be treated in tools like MLVapp using dedicated focus pixel maps (FPM).
200D uses DPAF and is therefore not affected.
- Frame drops should not happen in recent builds that often. None, in fact is more what to expect using modern Crop Mood builds.

If there are any troubles with 700D "Crop Mood" visit https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=26851.0 and post your issue there. Or join Discord for faster response.

Wow, this is very cool news! I came across a video on one of the YouTube channels, the person showed some intermediate results, and this is already good. Did I understand correctly that when recording raw there is no sound yet?

SL2 200D can record 1080p in 60fps H264, so my question is: is it possible to do HDR video with different iso in alternate frames in 1080p 60fps to get 30fps 1080p hdr after post processing in computer? My question is not about raw dual iso, it is about h264 hdr video with alternate iso in consecutive frames.

names_are_hard

In the current build?  No.  At some future time?  We don't know.  It sounds plausible.  Somebody will have to put in the time to learn how (assuming it is possible).

LittleBrittain

Very Excited for where this goes. I'm sure its alot of hard work for you guys but I recently started getting back into photography and photo editing as a hobby. I made a small but significant upgrade from a T5(1200d) to a SL2(200d) and while I don't currently do video very often I would like to have the option for raw video. The current lack of audio is the only thing holding me back from installing this on my personal camera.

Keep up the good work. I plan on keeping this camera for a long time despite its age and limitations, its quite capable and Log video would make it even more so.  I'll be checking back periodically for updates
