I wanted to perform this quick test to see how far I could push the footage in post and if it is usable for a movie production.  Sorry for the over saturated images and the camera shake.  I will be shooting another test with studio lighting.

Anyone out there utilizing the raw capabilities of the Canon 550d?  I'd love to know your experiences, positive, or negative. :)

well, I think this camera doesn't benefit much from raw video.... I tried that, could get about 10-12 seconds with maximum resolution in 3x3, and it is somewhat ok... it's useable. but I always get a lot of red noise in the shadows, even with 100 iso. While I can use iso 400-800 for video with regular .mov... so I've decided it's not worth it.

I have a t3i so its nearly the same camera.  I've been using the experimental 10bit build for a few months and haven't had any major issues. My continuous resolution is 1280 x 544 with the 2:35:1 aspect ratio. I always get a couple pink frames in the first second of recording but no weird noise or green dots or after that. I do try to stay at 100 but Ive gone up to 300-400ISO.

The MLVApp post process is a little annoying having to transcode larger files so if time is a factor its not great, but its nice being able to upscale to 1080 prores files since I use FCPX to edit.

I use RAW because to my untrained eye the 10bit RAW looks more natural than the compressed 8bit h.264. To me even the grain looks more natural, and it doesn't instantly fall apart when color grading. Sometimes the h.264 compression just kills me.

I have no problem spending the extra time and effort to squeeze any extra drop of quality out of a 10 year old camera.

TheMintHippo- Do they have the same build for the t2i?

TheMintHippo

Not officially? Just to be clear I am no expert or coder, I just read a lot of old threads. If you're really interested I would comb a ways back through the 10/12 bit thread, because I know it was at least tested on that camera during development.

The camera should theoretically be able to run this build, unless someone knows something I don't know. So the answer is probably somewhere in there.

I remember someone tested 10 bits with t2i, but it was unstable or something, and there is no build available right now...
