Hi there,
I'm a beginner to photography in general and I have purchased a 50D for raw video use.
Dual battery grip, 32GB-Ultra7 card.

I'll be filming short clips for integration with CG, so tracking the footage and grading are important.

I have the latest Canon patch and ML loaded and working.

I'm curious if there is a guide anywhere as to basic good settings for raw video, highest resolution practical, and 24-25FPS
I have enabled the MLV modules for viewing/recording but I think I am missing a menu regarding crop modes, resolution setting, and how to actually record RAW.

Is there a quick guide that anyone knows of with starting settings? The ML settings are a bit overwhelming for a beginner

Thanks for any help

Hello and welcome
Your best bet is always to search this forum and read as much as possible because you'll find that what you're looking for is not always in one place. A lot of the stuff is above my pay grade with all the tech speak  :-)  but it's always helpful.

That being said, you can check out this video for the basic setup. I think he may be using the 5Dii or 5Diii, but the setup is basically the same for standard RAW recording, except that the 50D doesn't record sound.

You can also check out a guy by the name of Zeek on YT. He uses an EOS M, but his vids are very helpful anyway.

The ML build you're looking for with crop recording 3.7k is available in this thread

Reddeercity has done an amazing job.

I'm using the 10bit/12bit experimental build from the ML downloads area for both my cameras and they are working fine.
You will have to play with a few combinations of aspect ratio and resolution pixel size to find what works best for you. Some people don't need continuous recording and use higher resolutions and others use slightly smaller resolutions to get continuous recording. Choosing between 10/12/14bit will also factor into the recording limit.

I started using ML RAW this week on my 50D and 1100D with EF lenses and I'm very happy with the results. I don't have fast cards, only old 50mb/sec and 30mb/sec so I record at around 17mb/sec to 20mb/sec with a pixel width of just over 1000px and I get continuous recording. I soon as I have proper fast cards I will test the 50D crop recording for 3.7k.
Post processing I use MLV App to view and do very minor tweaks to the RAW vid and then export upscaling to FHD. If you customise your in camera picture profile to resemble CineStyle and you nail you white balance in camera them there's very little to do in MLV App.
I modified my Neutral picture to:
Sharpness:       0
Contrast:         -3
Saturation:      -3
Colour Tone:     -2

I think CineStyle is something like:
Sharpness:       0
Contrast:         -4
Saturation:      -2
Colour Tone:     0

I'm happy with the way my footage looks in MLV App. There are a few other ways to process the RAW footage as a first stage in the workflow, but I prefer MLV App.

The main thing with RAW is to manage your expectations. The results are great, the ML devs have all done amazing work, but your footage will require some TLC to get it to where you want it (depending on what your vision is). There is no one app with a one click process to get to your end result. (Don't underestimate MLV App though - I think it's really awesome).

I still have to play with some footage in AfterEffects, but only when I stop tinkering around and attempt to record some serious stuff, but the tests I've done at 1054px width recording and upscaled are excellent as far as I'm concerned.
Faster CF card loading.....

Good luck and enjoy the 50D.

If you are shooting raw/mlv picture style settings will not be applied to footage.

Hi Walter,

Yes, but it is applied when using the camera matrix in MLV App is it not? Or at least it seemed that way to me. With my 'neutral' settings I seemed to get a nice flat-ish output visible in MLV App (with camera matrix applied) and then I adjust vibrance/saturation/contrast to taste and I get an acceptable look for me, then export. I like the output I get and I'm not a videographer/film maker so I'm not fussed about all the other technical stuff.
Let me know if I'm wrong in my assumption of the camera matrix please. Thanks.

You're wrong here. Picture style is not recorded at all into MLV. There is one camera matrix per camera. Camera matrix is a kind of sensor calibration.

Awesome. That's very much for clarifying.
