We need someone to judge which one is better now :P

This scene is not really good for judging the colors. It's actually very difficult to make it look natural as the light sources are mixed and some colors info is missed.

Sometimes I try to make the same color grading using 3 different programs: ACR, MLV App and Resolve (for practice only). Most of the times I get the fastest and the best results with ACR and than I can easily match it with other two programs.
But in this exact shot I cannot get the same result. Close enough but not the same.
Still ACR gives me better colors out of the box than other color grading programs.

Well, IMO, not everything should look "natural" all the time. For example, the two man behind the musician have purple midtones in it. I prefer to bring those hues to cyan instead, because the combination of yellow and purple are not as pleasing as yellow and cyan...

If I was to judge:
- Your version, @Dmytro_ua, is the most natural posted until now. I would just lift the shadows a bit, to bring more details to his overcoat.
- My version was purposefully exaggerated in the teal/orange. Noise everywhere. Bad separation of midtones in his face. Too much saturation.
- @Bender@arsch version has muddy midtones. I would bring more exposure there and decrese exposure in deep shadows. Colors are good.
- @DeafEyeJedi has some issue with magenta/green. Skin tones look pale.
- @Ilia3101 has a overall green cast.

Of course, each person has it's opinion. This is art, after all.

off-topic: why most of you guys use "ibb.co" to host images? Can't enter the site without javascript, it's quite annoying :)

DeafEyeJedi

Not to hijack this thread but @Dmytro_ua has my vote by far for first place. @Ilia3101 comes second. Third will probably go to @Luther but then I feel like due to his intentional exaggeration thus shouldn't qualify.  :P

So @Bender@arsch takes this last spot in despite not having enough exposure on his face and whatnot. Decent colors though.

But I admit that using LUT is not the most practical way and I was just trying to utilize the most out of MLV_App in ways like never before.  :D

Still trying to find that perfect workflow as far as how grading goes. That's what makes it worthwhile for this amazing app.  ;)

You're absolutely right. Maybe I wasn't quite clear.
By natural I didn't mean "neutral" (to correct everything by WB grey card).
I meant natural looking. When I look into the picture I don't want to see a green skin tone (if there were no obvious green light), pink color shift (as in the first post), oversaturated orange face or muddy shadows. All these are catching my eye not in a good way.

Funny you brough this up. For years I had been using Flickr (still do) and although I had noticed majority of the users on this forum were sharing images through ibb.co so decided to get the hang of that since that's what I assumed works best for y'all.

Correct me if I'm wrong though. Ha.

Hi, how have you converted the anamorphic 1360x2296 in 4080x2296 final resolution?
I have Magic Lantern in the Canon 5dMKIII and I want to film in 4k.

Thanks,
Carles

IDA_ML

I use MLVApp and it does the conversion automatically.  Upon opening a file with it, it even shows the correct preview.

I know IBB is not great, but I have simply been embedding the image. This way I assume there is no javascript being run, right?

Is your's edited in Rawtheapee? The denoising look is not something I've seen before from mlv app.

And I mostly agree with your judging. Mine should be less green, but all of everyone else's is a bit too magenta. Who used what software? I notice mine preserved the chromatic abberation (green edges) of the bokeh more than the other edits, which I like.

DeafEyeJedi's looks that way because of using rec2020, the shape of the gamut is not greatly shaped for grading like it's rec709 (green is way out there), AdobeRGB and Alexa RGB look better in my opinion (this is why almost every type of grading workflow can get good results with Alexa footage).

Also I just remembered, MLV App tint adjustment is quite crap actually, it is not done in the LMS colour gamut with white balance, but right after, when the image is in the final gamut. I did it this way as it easily preserved old tint code. I thought this would not make much difference as tint adjustments are generally small, but seems like these days everyone is adjusting the tint a lot.

Glad to see that the good old 5D3 is creating so much inspiration, guys.  Thanks a lot for your feedback.

Ilia3101,

If you consider buying the 5D3, now is the time to do that.  Thanks to the mirrorless madness, prices of this fantastic camera have dropped dramatically.  In my country, serious photographers are so pleased with their 5D3-s that they use them until the shutter breaks - very often after 350'000 actuations, and then they just throw them away since repair is too expensive.  Then they look for another used 5D3.  If you can find one in a good condition and with a low shutter count, do not hesitate to buy it.  You will be very pleased with its performance and especially the unmatched video capabilities and quality with the latest experimental ML builds.  Also, it will provide excellent service to you for many years to come.  So, good luck to you and everyone else considering a 5D3 purchase.

Any of those photographers can throw their 5D away to me if they want :D I think I might buy one with a high shutter count as it's really cheap that way (high risk, high reward lol), and I don't really care what the outside condition is.

Nice!! How is the liveview working while recording in anamorphic?

Well, you get a low-framerate WySiWyG preview - not perfect but sufficient for correct framing even if you move the camera.

Right. The issue is that most people just use their iframe, instead of the direct binary link, which requires javascript.

On MLVApp. Indeed, the noise is strange there.

Hi!
Mine was edited in ACR (Temp: 3600K, Tint: +9, Higlights: -52, Shadows +36, Satur -12)
But it can be easily graded close enough with MLV App. There are some minor differences which can be fixed in Davinci Resolve or any other color grading software (if needed).
Here are two samples (ACR vs MLV App):

Hopefully soon actually, it's not too big of a change.

@Dmytro_ua Thanks for the comparison. Looks like ACR handles that pizza sign so much better. This kind of stuff I really want to fix for 2.0, or possibly MLV App 2.

In your MLV App edit, I think if you enabled highlight reconstruction, reduced the Light strength slider closer to zero and pulled the highlights down a little more, the background might look smoother (less bright). What tonemapping did you use BTW?

Yes, this is exactly what I meant talking about "some minor differences".
Overall ACR has a look I like by default. To make the same with MLV App is a challenge for me. But I'm still trying, as I don't like the Adobe workflow at all.

This time I used Adobe RGB Gamut and Tonemapping is set to None (don't remember why   ;D )

I tried it, but didn't like the result. The blown highlight becomes - yellow/greenish and not bright enough. Doesn't look right to my taste.
And smth weird is happening to the floor reflection.

Hi, I am using fullhd raw with my 5dmark iii  for underwater video and it is wonderful, but now I will have to film in UHD in my next 2 projects.
Due this, I don't know how to film in UHD with this camera I amb thinking in to sell it and to by the 5dmark iv.
Before to do it, is there any place where can I to read the exactly instructions of where is and how to install the MLVApp and step to step how can I film in UHD with my 5dmark III?
My camera is really new and I am VERY happy with it.
Thanks.

Hi Walter, I have seen the ML APP (thanks), but for film in 4k/UHD 16:9, I have read the 8x pages of the forum that you have said me and I don't see where can I download the correct ML 5DMARKIII 1.2.3. version for film in UHD.
Please, can you send me the link?
I would be very thank you if possible.

I've used Reinhard 3/5 on my last work. Very pleased with the result, compared to Log-C. Should be the default tonemapping, together with AP1 as gamut. Gives the best results for me.
