Glad to see a pro-sumer camera coming back to the market with uncompressed raw in cDNG (RED and Blackmagic raw is compressed and just a name).

12 bit 4k full frame dng? That sounds like a dream.

Finally the camera companies are catching up to MagicLantern. Only difference will be that this camera is probably going to cost $9k

24MP camera, full frame raw would be 6K, so it must have a 1.5X crop.

Kharak

Could be downsampled 4k from 6k.

But 12 bit cdng is external recording only, but not specified if you need an actual recorder or just SSD drive. The concept video shows it rigged up with a SSD, like the BMP4k.

There is so much talk of RED owning patents on wavelet compression e.g. the reason Blackmagic removed cdng from the P4k when they introduced Braw. That is atleast word on the street (the internet). Interesting to see if this camera will run with uncompressed cdng only.
once you go raw you never go back

Not a fan of raw that's already debayered, a waste of energy and storage just to get slightly worse results.

RED are assholes, but couldn't companies just use LJ92 or sommething not patented?

KirbyLikes525

All valid points. I think the strength of the camera is uncompressed raw out the box based on an open format and not proprietary like Red or Blackmagic. Us Magic Lantern users don't mind experimenting but we're a minority. Most users want out-the-box functions and features.

Yes, LJ92 ofcourse! Forgot about that hehe. The camera is a stills camera too, so the jpeg engine is there, i'm sure that is the way they will try and implement it. But LJ92 compression can be quite ineffective in complex bright scenes and reach data rates uptowards uncompressed.

Braw does not grade aswell as the uncompressed cdng the cameras had, but for most people they rather take the easy playback and reduced file sizes.

Either way, p4k gives a lot of camera for very little dineros.

In the camera web page it says "storage media: Portable SSD USB 3+". They don't specify that it should be a tape recorder. --> https://www.sigma-global.com/en/cameras/fp-series/specifications/

Yes, I saw the announcement for this camera.

Wonder where they came up with that form factor:

I miss that they didn't go with Foveon sensor.  :-[

But they plan to launch a Foveon model next year according to PetaPixel and Fstoppers.

But they managed do put a bigger sensor, that's not bad at all, waiting the foveon version with the hope it will be an improved merril...
I'm using ML2.3 for photography with:
EOS 600DML | EOS 400Dplus | EOS 5D MLbeta5- EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro  - EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM - EF 70-200mm f/4 L USM - 580EXII - OsX, PS, LR, RawTherapee, LightZone -no video experience-

A 35mm Foveon recording CDNG would be fantastic. I think the colors will look even better than ALEXA LF or DXL2.
They will need some faster flash memory, though, I'm not sure SATA SSD will be enough for high frame rate and NVMe with M.2 interface is very expensive...
I would easily buy one with Foveon if I had the money. Just to test the true power of Foveon with ACES workflow :P
Also, the minimalist design is great.

Not really my area but some of the other lads (AXIOM) were talking about LJ92 being used recently. Alex probably knows more about why. But then, MLV is the emphasis for us.

If RED are such arseholes how comes their forums have like 100,000 users on at any given time? Because that's always fascinated me.

In 2020.07.02 Sigma came up with a Camera Control SDK for Windows: https://www.sigma-global.com/en/news/2020/07/02/10916/

Would it be possible, to "translate" ML functions, modules etc. for the Sigma fp and Sigma fp L?

No, not really.  What you're really asking is: would it be possible to use their SDK to reverse engineer Sigma FP in order to run arbitrary code on it and then reimplement ML from scratch on a camera that shares little to no hardware.  The answer might be yes but it's an enormous amount of work to find out if it's even possible, and then even more work on top of that to get the result you want.

Realistically this would be a separate project, nothing to do with ML.

Milk and Coffee

Anybody know how they go from 6k sensor to 4K raw? Pixel binning? Line skipping? What other "downscaling" methods are there that allow RAW recording (true RAW that is, no BRAW crap...lol)?
Canon 5D Mark II, Mac/OSX

Walter Schulz

It is called oversampling.
At least it is used on R3.
