Hello everyone,

new user here (maybe that's the reason i can't create a topic in camera-specific discussion?) using a 650D. Old but still working just fine. Now for a project it'll be my first time using it as a camcorder. Now i know about the 4GB/29m59s default limit (i do have a 128GB Class 10 UHD microSD card available at all times, a 64GB one and a normal 16/32SD). I've known about ML for a while just never had a need for it until possibly now. So before i proceed to installing this firmware i have a few questions i could not locate an answer for immediately

1. Is firmware 1.0.4 mandatory (which the camera is on) or can/should i update to the 1.0.5 build of the official firmware first. If not i assume 1.0.5 is not compatible with the latest ML for the 650D

2. Can i bypass the video filesize/duration limit with ML? If so how? and what would be the estimated max duration possible based upon using that 128GB Sandisk Ultra Class (10) SDXC (1)

Many thanks in advance!

There is no 4 GB limit in 650D affecting recording time. Recording without ML will get splitted into chunks < 4 GB, though.

ML builds are hardcoded for the proper firmware version. Official builds for 650D require 1.0.4. There is however a build by user dfort for 1.0.5.: https://bitbucket.org/daniel_fort/magic-lantern/downloads/

There are at least 2 varieties called "Sandisk Ultra". Class 10 doesn't tell that much.
In H.264 (native Canon MOVs) you will get at least 5.5 hours interrupted each 29:59.
In RAW/MLV mode (ML only) recording duration depends on resolution/bit depth/compression mode. If your card is fast enough you may record 720p24, 14 bit uncompressed for about 55 minutes. 720p24, 10 bit lossless compressed for about 2.5 hours. I don't think battery will hold up that long.
There is a calculator, too: https://rawcalculator.netlify.com/calculator_desktop

It's that splitting up on 30min fragments i want to get rid of. It's not really an option for what i intend to do. Battery isn't an issue. I've got a battery pack that hold 2 batteries, and another 2 in spare. I'll think about it. 55min is still too short, 2.5hrs sounds more reasonable. If i find it non-feasible with the DSLR i might end up getting a used cheap camcorder that holds SD cards. I know for a fact that'll most likely work ^^

Many thanks!
