To get more frames for slow motion change region to NTSC and shoot 60fps. That way you can slow down to 40% (48% with 50fps) without adding frames with twixtor or optical flow (fcpx).

Shame that there is no way to wring several more frames per second from the codec (1/3rd speed would be awesome!), thanks for the tip though

Not to my knowledge. The 500D can only reach 30fps.

You can also record at 60 then bring that into an editor that can do image sequences. Export the 60fps as an image sequence then you have additional choices as to what speed you play back. I do it on every slo mo sequence I create. Also forces each frame to be complete (intra) so the final sequence looks much nicer. Remember not to go too fast on the shutter speed or you'll get the Pvt Ryan effect.
