Is there a device out there which will remotely start / stop RAW recording? Like a cabled remote shutter?

Just putting together my doc-style rig and would love to mount a start / stop button on a handle.

I use 4 Yongnuo transmitters that works really well, they are cheap aswell. THe name of them is RF-603CII

Looks like this on my zacuto marauder, that I hopefully will trade in for a zacuto recoil docu.

How have you configured your shutter button to start / stop video? Just had a look in the Canon / ML menus and can't find anything obvious. At the moment my release just wants to start autofocus / take a picture..

I guess you have a 5D3, if so it's in the Canon menu SHOOT5:Movie the red tab and there is Triggerbutton or something like that in the third row. You need to turn of autofocus on the lens for it to work proparly.

Thanks! Got it working  :)

Nice find. Can this work wirelessly or does it require a cable connected to 5D3?

If you have several remotes you can put one on your cage or camera, and connect it with a c3 cable. In some way yes it needs a cable but not from the actual remote you press to record.

Just thinking about getting these to work with my Gimbal (Ronin MX) while running 5D3 on it. Sounds like I'll still need to use a cable in order to start/stop recording from RF-603CII, correct?

Basically one will be attached on the cage connected to 5D3 and another attached on handle bar next to where my thumb will be. At least that's what I have in mind.

Yeah somthing like these transmitter/receiver is great togheter with a gimbal I think.

Yes you will need a C3 cable to start & stop, C3 is a regular shutter release cord for almost all Canon DSLRs. I have four 603II so I use the three other ones where needed, and trigger the camera wireless from them.

The range is good don't know how long thought, and it starts the recording as fast as the buttons on the 5D3.

Thanks for the inputs @allemyr! Would the Rec/Stop only work for H.264 recording and not MLV RAW within ML?

Following the above instructions works for me Rec/Stop for MLV Raw video.

Great! Shame on myself for missing your OP. Thanks for your clarifications @beauchampy -- would you mind sharing a screenshot of your set-up with the gimbal?

Curious which part of the cage that's attached to the Ronin that you used to connect the cable to the 5D3 meanwhile using the 2nd wireless button next to your handle.

I'm making a shoulder mount documentary rig, not a gimbal rig.. I will just keep using the on camera record button for my gimbal.

I use my 5D3s on both a shoulder rig and Ronin-M.  To remote start/stop both .mov and .mlv I use this: http://www.aputure.com/blog/2014/02/v-grip-usb-focus-handle-vg-1/ which can also control focus and aperture on an autofocus lens, plus can form one of the handles of a shoulder rig.

Canon remote switch RS-80N3 https://store.canon.co.uk/canon-rs-80n3-remote-switch/2476A001/ also starts/stops both .mov and .mlv as OP suggests.

Just incase anyone was wondering, there are no electronics inside these shutter switches. Therefore, very easy to make your own should you fancy. I'm going to try and find a PTM switch that will fit inside the holes in my handlebars.

What a genius move @beauchampy! That's a great catch and this is definitely an excellent concept. Top 5 hack of the decade. Not sure if I have the balls to drill a hole into the carbon fiber yet tho. [emoji12]

Glad there are more options. Do you feel that the Aputure's V-grip itself is sturdy enough to withstand the normal abuse of run 'n gun type of shooting on set like as if it were a "normal hand grip on a rig" so to speak?

Probably not.  It's not cheaply made, but certainly not the stuff of my (Lanparte) metal rig.  The buttons on mine all still work as intended after a couple of years, but I can't say it's been subjected to a rough life.  I could see even a short, accidental drop of a rig to the ground on the V-grip may damage the plastic casing and/or the connector to the rail clamp.
