I'm a Windows 10 user of Premiere/After Effects CS6, using Magic Lantern on an EOS Rebel T3i (600D). I'm looking to make the switch to raw video, for roughly the same reasons that I switched to raw photos several years ago - better editability, and I don't care much about the increased space usage.

I've read a number of posts here, and I'm trying to put together my workflow (after shooting the actual footage). I'm making several assumptions based on my reading, and I'd really appreciate it if someone could verify or correct them.

  • Copy the files (which will be in MLV format) to my PC
  • Convert the files from MLV to DNG using MlRawViewer
  • Delete the original .mlv files

    • Due to Assumption 2, because the DNG conversion is lossless there's no reason to keep both sets of files
    • Assumption 3  - The DNG format is supported widely enough that I don't need to keep the originals.
  • Bring the converted DNG files into Premiere or After Effects for editing

    • Assumption 4 - I can now edit these files as I would any other filetype supported by Adobe, and export the clips or sequences to a compressed format like H.264 if I so choose.
