Hello,

Is there a way to turn off the display while taking silent DNG photos in intervalometer mode ?
I'm using a 60D.

I found this topic but it's pretty old so I thought I'd ask again, maybe there's a way now ?

thanks :)

With full-res, simply disable image review in Canon menu (or set it to 2 seconds).

With LiveView, it should work if you enable Powersave in LiveView (but last time I checked it was probably 2 years ago, so if it doesn't work, it's best to report an issue).

remizik

thanks for your fast answer :)

intervalometer + "full res" doesn't work at all for me :(

and intervalometer + "simple" works, but the screen is kept alive somehow, doesn't go to powersave mode.

edit: found the issue - https://bitbucket.org/hudson/magic-lantern/issues/2265/turn-off-lcd-enabled-stops-intervalometer

I also found another weirdness (which I don't remember seeing before): right before taking the next picture, it goes to LiveView for a split-second. Looking into it.

edit2: I hope it's fixed now.

In the second case, the LiveView wakes up to be able to take pictures (so that's how it works).

remizik

so there's no way to take silent full res pictures with intervalometer ?  :'(

Walter Schulz

You have to wait for tonight's build. Or compile ML on your own. If you haven't a development machine up and running now ETA might be just the same.

remizik

oh ok, his last sentence made me think it was an unfixable thing  :o
sorry about that, english is not my 1st language :)

That's some fast fixing ! thanks a lot @a1ex

remizik

I can confirm the last version works fine ! (interval + HighRes silent pictures)
thank you so much :)

still doesn't go to LCD powersave mode though, but maybe there's no way to achieve that ?

a1ex

Here it works with display off all the time (full-res + intervalometer, image review off in Canon menu).

Another powersaving tip: the MLV format is much less CPU-intensive than DNG.

Walter Schulz

The only way to stop using this config (full-res + intervalometer + image review off) is to turn off power (or remove battery or open card door). Correct?
Changing mode using dial will freeze cam.

a1ex

I usually either change the mode to Av and back, or open the card door. No crashes yet.

Will try on more cameras.

Walter Schulz

You are right! I got confused because all the buttons seemed to be dead after dial. But half-shutter is bringing LV back.

remizik

ok I can confirm (canon 60D) the screen stays black with full-res + intervalometer, image review off in Canon menu
either in DNG or MLV

now i need to find a way to extract jpgs out of the MLV file :D onto googling !
edit : I made a batch :p http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=16725

thanks a lot for your help guys

remizik

bumping this,

the screen doesn't go black with simple silent picture + intervalometer + image review off in Canon menu

can anyone else confirm ?

dmilligan

remizik

but it works perfectly fine with full res, it's just the "simple" silent pictures that keep the screen on, no matter what.

remizik

Yes it's activated.
As I said, just changing from "simple" to "full res" fixes it.

a1ex

What settings are activated under Powersave in LiveView?

remizik

remizik

taking screenshots doesn't work here so ... :D

(don't pay attention to the other settings like intervalometer and MLV full res above it)

a1ex

Just tried with the Feb29 nightly for 60D:

The screen turns off as soon as leaving ML menu, and only wakes up when it takes pictures.

Note my settings are different than those in your screenshot because:

I did not touch image review in Canon menu, as it has no effect in LiveView.

Screenshot also works; what problem did you have with it?

remizik

thanks for your reply :) here's 2 videos to illustrate

for the simple MLV + intervalometer : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHy7_I6dkc8
as soon as I change for "Full Res", the screens goes and stays black :)

and one for the screenshot : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQ-5Sdx089M
(i have nothing on the SD card after that)

cheers !
