Hello ML nerds! I'm proud to share with you my first short film LIPSTICK.
Filmed on Canon 5DMKIII with Magic Lantern of course and all in RAW mode.
All the short has been edited, vfxed and graded inside After Effects by myself.
It has already been nominated by VOTD and selected by FilmShortage.

So here it is:

Thanks,

S/.

Some technical infos:
All has been shot in RAW with ML at 24p, 1920x960 for the most part to have some room to reframe in the 2.35 format.
Extreme close-ups have been shot at 2240x954 in crop mode.
I don't remember the parameters for the slow motions, but I had to do a vertical scale to find the good aspect ratio.

My workflow has been:
MLV -> MLVMystic -> CinemaDNG -> AE -> ProRes422Proxy
I've used the ProRes for the edit and linked the ProRes files to the CinemaDNG for all the grading.
I've used LUTs found on the web as a base, then used Colorista to fine tune things, with some of the regular AE filters.

I've spent so much time on the grading as the light was far from perfect on set.
There are lots of invisible vfxs too, to correct the much I have been able to do in the time I had, so working inside AE was easy to do these tricks.

Thanks for the comments guys!

Happy ML!

DeafEyeJedi

Thanks for sharing the technical details, @motionSOUL!

Perhaps next time try using MLVFS. Not only it'll speed up your workflow but it'll save some space as the DNG's are virtual.

MLV > MLVFS > AE (especially if you are fluent with AE's workflow as I am as well)

I also like to color grade my footage with Cinelog-C which comes with a whole bunch of LUTS to go with in a bundle package. Worth checking them out and plus their new update is coming soon.

Thanks for the infos, I will definitely check Cinelog-C.
I have tried MLVFS at the beginning of its development. Sounds really cool to gain space and prevent the converting stage but you still need ProRes for the edit right?
Or is MLVFS+AE really fast to edit in this format?

S/.

DeafEyeJedi

Yes, I usually export from AE into ProRes after color grading them.

For an even quicker workflow and be able to spit out ProRes4444 without using AE or any NLE ... Check out MLP which is an excellent application that's constantly up to date as always!

Ok, first off, I really like the colors and the framing. good cinematography hands down.

But (And I do not mean to be offensive, REALLY) I really don't understand why this short movie is so good as everybody is saying. Is it because of taste? Is it because i can not see the subtext? I have seen it a few times and I really, really can not understand why would it be picked by any festival. Of course, I am glad for the maker that is getting so much good feedback, still, I am really struggling to see why.

AGAIN, I am not trying to be a troll or anything I would really like to understand What you all see that I clearly don't?

cmccullum

@extremelypoorfilmaker what do you get from the content? I appreciate your question, btw, as people seem to typically be afraid of questioning art. So let's start with what you gather from the content, and why you don't particularly like it and see if we can find what you may or may not be missing

extremelypoorfilmaker

@cmccullum

I could say that what I get from the content is a woman re-living the fact that 9/11 killed her lover inside her bathroom. At first, I thought we were going to see as well the man the Voice Over talks about, and I was disappointed by the fact it didn't show.

At first view I though it was the beginning of something else..

cmccullum

@extremelypoorfilmaker Thats all I got from the story as well, but I don't think that's a bad thing. I feel the film does a good job translating the emotion of the woman to the audience (to me at least). So when I wonder why other people like it I think it's the combination of really nice cinematography and emotion conveyed.

One thing that throws me in the whole video is the music transition at the end. It sucks me right out of the moment every time. aside from that though, I think it's really good. Maybe not revolutionary, or particularly breathtaking, but good and I mean that in the best way possible

motionSOUL

Sorry to interrupt ;-)
It is really nice to watch people exchange some thoughts about a piece I have done. Really interesting.
As for the part 're-living the fact that 9/11 killed her lover' it is, for me, more complex than that... It is not about memory.

@motionSOUL

How can you interrupt a forum post, especially on your topic? :D You are more than welcome! You are even welcome to tell me to shut up because I don't understand one thing about Cinema! :)
Care to explain to me what's more complex than what I got from it? Because, aside for that, I really didn't get what this movie is all about. :) (AGAIN, NO OFFENSE HAS TO BE TAKEN PLEASE! I am just trying to get my opinion across)

@cmccullum
I have to agree with you. Most probably, it's just that this short movie is not my cup of tea. I think the cinematography and the VFX are very good. The acting is Good too, but the rest is too artsy for a brute like me to understand :D

Kharak

once you go raw you never go back

motionSOUL

OK, I won't explain everything sorry. This is exactly what I was looking for when I have imagine this piece.
Some people get it as I have think about it, some people don't. No problem. It isn't smart vs dumb. Like in all arts if it speaks to you, fine.
I like the way this short disturbs people. These events have troubled me a lot. All the pieces are here.

Thanks a lot,

S/.

DeafEyeJedi

That's why it's called ART ... At least he got the audience intrigued by this short which means he got the job done. There are no rules in creativity!

Simple as that and that's not easy to achieve at all especially with NO dialogue which is incredible!

Again thanks for sharing your masterpiece @motionSOUL!

My turn to say "Wow wow wow!". Thanks DeafEyeJedi!

cmccullum

@deafeyejedi hear hear

@motionsoul I think it's fair to say that you don't need to explain everything. Your video is clearly conveying things that words alone can not, and I think that's a good thing
