7D vs 600D (or 650D or 700D) vs 50D vs Any in similar?
« on: July 31, 2015, 07:56:54 AM »
I guess this may be impolite to ask many of you fellow ML users according to from your experiences with any of these cameras....

Out of these four -- which should I choose for and why?

Personally I don't care for the cost (since I can find them all used online in similar to it's price except for the 7D possible another $100 more or less so) but may refrain myself to get the 650D due to it's SD card only compatible and limited writing speeds of 41 MB/s (correct me if I'm wrong).

So in my head I have been thinking just to get the 7D instead of the 50D for obvious reasons.

But something in my gut is telling me to go with the 600D instead because it basically annihilates the other twos in terms of how much Features it includes via ML especially with its Audio Controls and whatnot.

Though admittedly I am tempted to use the crop-mode hack that includes in only the 650D out of the three which is a nice feature to use for h264 stuff.

I wouldn't be asking this if the 5D3's could simply just include the crop-mode hack already in their nightlies... Maybe one of these days!

Thanks for your time!

600D is out of question if you're concerned about 650D's slow interface because 600D will do slow you down to about 21 MByte/s.

Okay that makes me think twice and want to rephrase my question again...

Perhaps what I should have said was 50D vs 700D vs 7D...

or just 700D vs 7D because...

Thanks, Walter!

p.s. I'm trying to stick with as many CF supported cameras as possible, if you know what I mean by that.

I think the 700d(and 650d and 600d) has those on sensor focus points, so if you want to shoot raw video, you get those focus points visible in your frame (can be removed, but it's easier when it isn't there in the first place)
So 700d wouldn't be my first choice, if I want to shoot raw video with it.

Similar to PDR from EOS-M?

Canon calls it
Hybrid CMOS AF
But it results in those purple red dots on your raw video  :P
Canon probably maps those AF pixels out before writing a raw CR2 photo file.

Alright then since I already own an EOS-M so no need another PDR prone camera.

Guess it'll be either save up some more to get the M3 instead and hopefully contribute to help speed up process of importing ML to it...

Or I'll just continue to keep an eye out and snatch a good deal online to get either a used 7D or 50D.

Thanks!

P.S. To 60D users -- any complaints about your camera running ML and shooting MLV RAW?

Anybody on here willingly to upload samples of original MLV from any of these cameras listed below please, if possible?

700D?

60D?

50D?

even a half second is perfectly fine... I just want to see what's it like to work with them in post.

If you could shoot Dual-ISO as well, that would be a plus!

Much appreciated!

60D shares 21 MByte/s limit with 500D, 550D, 600D.
50D and 7D not supporting Dual-ISO in video mode. 7D not supporting HDR video.

50D has no dual ISO video, no sound, serious problems with moiré, pretty bad noise above ISO 1600 and a maximum RAW video resolution of 1568x1058. The fast CF interface is a big plus (if you can afford the rather expensive cards), but otherwise I wouldn't recommend it for video. Without ML, it's a completely outdated still cam and with ML it can barely keep up with current amateur models. I'm not unhappy with mine, because it's still working great after more than 5 years and I've gotten used to it, but if you're going to buy something new, it's probably not the best you can get right now.

The 7D is probably similar, but with better AF and less noise. I can't speak from experience with this one. If you're going to do a lot of raw video, you should probably choose a camera that supports dual ISO and HDR video. You may not need these functions every day, but sometimes they can turn a shot from completely unusable to quite ok, if you know what you're doing.

Alright Thanks guys for your comments -- After spending another week or so researching online and I have came to a conclusion that it may be more ideal for me to order M3 instead.

Does that sound more reasonable in order to possible help speed up the process of porting ML for the M3's?

I don't mind chiping in another $100 or so to sacrifice myself on getting a camera that's not supported by ML as of yet.

But I'm trying to think ahead on this one... thoughts?

May purchasing a cam help speed up process of porting ML? Hell, no!
Do you have a spare ARM developer in your attic? Yes!

Got the m3 dump but atm struggling with IDA as Pelican's ARMu won't support ARMv6. On a side note: looks like chdk might run on m3, too.

I would never buy a camera with the expectation that ML will run on it later.
If you want to use ML, the smartest thing would be buying a cam that is highly supported.
