The best CF card on raw recording
« on: July 11, 2015, 05:19:41 AM »
Hi all,

I have a question about ML raw recording with Canon 5D3.
Which CF card do I have to buy?
I am considering one of two below.

SanDisk Extreme PRO 128GB; 160MB/s (1067X) read, 150MB/s (1000X) write

Lexar Professional 1066x 128GB; 160MB/s (1066X) read, ???MB/s write(not published in official)

It is very important to record the raw video with the highest quality and the best resolution (1920x1080?).
* I have never used ML before. So I don't know the setting.

I just would like to hear from you, ML professionals.
Please advise me.
Which CF do I have to buy? Which is better with Canon 5D3?

Hope your reply soon.

Recently i have bought two sandisks extreme pro 128gb like you mentioned, after 2-3 monhts of extensive using i am more than happy. They were 100 percent reliable with 5d3 1080p 24/25fps, no single recording stop or dropped frame. I have also an older komputerbay 64 1000x, it was good but stopped sometimes, now im only keeping it as a backup or additional space just in case. I decided to buy sandisks for speed and whats more- reliability for some important project. Two sandisks 128gb and nextodi 2730 500gb portable drive are keeping me safe during the shooting day.   5D Mark III, 6D, 550D

Thank you for your advice!
So, I decided to buy sandisk cf card.

Can I ask you a question?
Do you record with crop mode on 5D3?
If you do, please tell me about it with sandisk cf card.

Sandisk are one of the best cards in the market but also KB's 1066x cards are pretty nice and just as reliable for the most part.

Hi all, I'm new here.
It's my first day with Magic Lantern into my 5D3, and I had a movie recording stopped automagically message (when I tried to shoot in crop mode) and I immediately suspected the CF card...
This is my set:
-firmware downgraded to 1.2.3;
-2015Apr28 Nightly Built;
-SanDisk Extreme Pro CF 256GB (ExFAT formatted via OSX Utility Disc - NOT in camera) and this is the UNIQUE card in the camera (ML files are stored in the root directory) so the card is in SLOT 1 (so no Low Level Format option possible);
-Canon Menu: Movie rec. size 1920x1080 24p ALL-I;
-Magnification: x5 (ISO and STOPS change into red on the screen);
-ML Menu: Movie > RAW video ON, 3584x1320;
-lens: 35mm f/2.0 IS USM (in ManualFocus mode, but with stabilizer ON).
I press Start button (camera icon on the screen is red) and immediately arrives the message: movie recording stopped automagically.

I tried other resolutions (always with x5 magnification): 2048x1152 gives me 8 or 9 seconds, then again the stopping message (ISO, STOPS and Camera icons always red).

I tried also 1920*1080 in crop mode: 30 seconds with Camera icon yellow, after that icon becomes red, and at 40 seconds again the stopping message.

In FullFrame mode (simply without magnification activated) the Camera icon is green and all works fine.

What could be the issue in crop mode? Perhaps the CF card is not fast enough? (But it declares 150MB/s writing.) Could it be the NOT-in-camera formatting method I used? Perhaps 256GB is too much for the CF card? Could it be something I didn't set correclty in ML menu? Something else?

Please, I hope you want to help me. Thanks.

Hi Adrjork! Did you find what's the issue with frame skipped stopping?
