About to order a new 15" MBP Retina Display from Apple
« on: June 18, 2015, 08:11:56 PM »
Hello Fellow ML users-

Here are the few specs I've decided to come down for MBP before ordering it...

1) http://store.apple.com/us/buy-mac/macbook-pro?product=MJLQ2LL/A&step=config ($3099)
15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display
2.8GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 4.0GHz
16GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM
1TB PCIe-based Flash Storage
Intel Iris Pro Graphics
Force Touch trackpad
Backlit Keyboard (English) & User's Guide
Accessory Kit

2) http://store.apple.com/us/buy-mac/macbook-pro?product=MJLT2LL/A&step=config ($3200)
15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display
2.8GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 4.0GHz
16GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM
1TB PCIe-based Flash Storage
Intel Iris Pro Graphics + AMD Radeon R9 M370X with 2GB GDDR5 memory
Force Touch trackpad
Backlit Keyboard (English) & User's Guide
Accessory Kit

To me it is a no brainer to go with #2 for $100 more to get the better graphic cards (Intel Iris Pro + AMD Radeon R9 M370X)

Thoughts?

Yes #2 Always go for the biggest GPU you can get. I would sacrifice  Ram to get a better GPU.
and the New FCPX 10.2.1 Supports Dual GPU's , not and sure if there have to the same thou.

Figured -- I believe I chose the most GPU as well as the most RAM available according to Apple.com -- back in the day I used to be able to modify my own MBP by swapping out HDD for SDD as well as upgrading RAM myself.

But now we cannot do that anymore with the newly MBP that has Retina Display... so how exactly can I sacrifice RAM to get better GPU when I thought I picked the highest for both?

That's nice that the updated FCPX supports Dual GPU's -- but not sure if the current line of MBP provides that option?

Thanks @reddeercity!

Also TBH with you all... I've saved up quite a bit for the past few years and now I'm on the fence between the MBP & 5D3 -- I originally started saving $ to get another body but seems like MBP would be more ideal for now until the 5D3 prices drop with the new release of the next 5D.

Hmmm?

Okay so I've decided to go with #2 and I hope you all understood that I was only hoping to hear from you guys that this won't be "OverKill" if I need to use apps that require heavy graphic cards such as Davinci Resolve, etc...

Because I've seen some of you guys run DR 11 with no problems on Macbook Air's, Macbook's, anything below the MBP line... which is suprising to me! (I've been wanting to get my hands familar with DR for quite a few years but no hardware I own would support it other than my 2006 MBP which oddly does NOT crash despite of being almost 10 years old) -- LOL

But I'm obviously trying to plan ahead of the future and I'm sure with this #2 pick will take me long ways to at least 10 more years with smooth rendering, editing and all the fun stuff that comes along with ML!

Agreed?

Looks good. Make sure all programs you use will work before buy. Shouldn, t be a problem but DR is picky with graphic cards.

Actually THB with you all I have NOT ordered this yet...

I wanted to research thoroughly some more for other options out there and also the fact that older MBP's are capable of upgrading Drives (for SSD) as well as RAM (up to 16GB or more).

Check out this rare 17" MBP that I found through Best Buy's refurbished section.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/apple-macbook-pro-17-led-notebook-intel-core-i7-i7-2720qm-2-20-ghz-graphite/1308847083.p?id=mp1308847083&skuId=1308847083

Would this particular video card will work with DR 11 as well as other NLE's?

It's a pretty good price actually... But obviously the graphic/video card cannot be replaced since its scolded in - correct?

but again like I said earlier I'm looking forward to the future so it may be more ideal to go with the new?

I have exactly this graphics card (Radeon HD 6750M) in my iMac, but with only 512MB. Works not great but good enough with DR11. That means, mlv real time playback is only possible without any correction. With correction I have a slideshow... but it's okay for adjusting and for rendering.
