Hi guys,

Ive been using ML on my 5dii and it wont start.

I think I was quite careful to avoid removing the CF before the confirmation light and Ive tried the "First things to try" troubleshooting steps here:http://magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=2221.0 - but no luck :(

Now the only response I get from the camera is a single flash of the red LED when I turn the camera off/on or insert battery and ONLY WHEN USING A ML card.

Ive tried swapping batteries, lenses etc...

I think ive come about as far as I can alone and I really like some help/pointers as I a bit out of my depth with tech-stuff :(

Thanks in advance

Elin.

Remove battery, remove cards (if any). Insert battery (but no card) and startup cam. What happens?

ElinG.

Hi Walter,

Thanks for your reply; I actually saw you suggest this on another thread and tried it but nothing happens, no response at all.

Can you try this test? www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=14732

It will try to turn on your display without calling anything from main firmware (just with bootloader routines).

Hi,

Sorry, maybe this is a silly question but re.
"If you are already running ML, just download this autoexec.bin, run it, take a picture of your camera screen (sorry, no screenshots yet) and upload it here."

Does that mean I replace AUTOEXEC.BIN already on my ML card or I try it from a non ML card?

Walter Schulz

Rename the original one and copy the debug autoexec.bin to the card

Good, the hardware seems alive and kicking.

Can you describe what you did right before the issue appeared? I'm looking for ways to reproduce.

Also, can you send me privately a copy of your ROM0 and ROM1.BIN files from your ML card? (in ML/LOGS). An older copy is fine.

ElinG.

Hi Alex,

Actually I just took it out of my bag today, I had been testing ML on Saturday; some shooting RAW clips some MOVs.

I also went on to use a non ML card later in the same session. I did notice some erratic behaviour during my tests, locking up "blue and red leds"... things like that... but the footage was ok.

Ill send you those files now,

Thanks again for your help so far!

If you get only a single short blink, I'm afraid the camera doesn't go too far with the boot process. I need a way to view the diagnostic messages from the camera, and on 5D2 I wasn't able to write to the card with bootloader routines yet.

Do you have access to one of those? (any of them, not both)
- a phototransistor, to be wired on your soundcard input, as described here: http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Obtaining_a_firmware_dump
- a second camera that runs ML, to be used as described here: http://magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=13070

Dont have one of those...

I do have a 5diii - or at least my other half does - but it doesnt run ML and im a bit scared to install it in case we lose both :s

..  I guess thats not v. helpful :(

ElinG.

Hi again Alex,

So ive talked my other half into letting me install ML on her 5diii - I hope this is a reasonably safe process as no camera=no income :/

I understand I install at my own risk; but are there any tips I should follow?

Thanks again!

Elin.

Hi Walter,

A1ex suggested on the 16th that to take it further I would need

"a second camera that runs ML, to be used as described here: http://magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=13070"

... I have managed to convince my other half to let me use his 5diii - but im not quite sure where to go next... and im scared that if I "break" that....

do u think theres a reasonable chance of repairing my 5dii?

in short, im willing to go ahead - but ill need some help/reassurance along the way ;)

If I remember such situations correctly I heard something like "Tell me to do it! Now!" from another room and I was trained to answer "Do it! Now!" without further asking and taking the blame if it fails. It always worked. Kind of.

ElinG.

this is all getting rather cryptic :(

is there anyone in Spain/Europe who would be interested in helping me with this?

for a modest financial reward of course! :)

ElinG.

hello again!

sorry to be a pain in the a#$e guys! im sure ur all busy people and i understand that its difficult when ur dealing with the technically-challenged (me!) but would anybody be able to walk me through the process for resolving this (or at least discussing the probability/feasibility).

I understand you all give ur time and knowledge here free of charge and have work obligations etc so im happy to pay an hourly fee...

Hi Walter,

Thanks for ur reply - I hope u had a nice easter.

Ok, so Ive taken the decision to maybe get a 6d to replace my old 5d II; It was an original model (7+ years old) so it was time to upgrade.

When I get the 6d Id definitely still like to try to fix the 5d if possible, but id rather do it on the 6d than my husbands 5d iii.

Ill get back to you in a couple of weeks when I have it ready to go,

Thanks

E.
